It receives a signal "pulse" from the ignition coil, if I remember correctly. It's easy to do with any 240 clusters. :D

So you can interchange the clocks and tech without wiring anything else? How does the techometer know the RPM's?

I know it's been 10 years. And I do apologize for the awfully late response. But the tach receives a signal from the ignition coil. Also correct about changing the clock and tach without requiring extra wiring. HOWEVER, I will say that if you decide to install the SMALL(52mm gauge) tach next to the instrument cluster, instead of the big tach and small clock, you will need some extra wiring. But that can be easily achieved for any original gauge if you have the original harness. Even if you don't have original wires for it, it will only take a little extra time to make your own harness and install. Either way you will be happy with your craftmanship and look. Hope you are still driving an old Volvo 240!
