my father had a '89 740 GL stationwagon when we lived in Gothenburg, later we moved to Croatia and we had to get rid of it in '97 eventually because of the foreign licence plates. He sold it to my fathers lawyer, he said he needed it when in the countryside, as a farmer. While he was inspecting the car he opened the hood to check the state of the engine in front of my dad. He asked my dad, how many kilometers has he done, he replied 500 000 km...oh so you have a new engine inside! My father replied: No!.....the buyer asked him "but how is it possible, the engine looks like new and no rust anywhere!?" well thats the 740 for you :)

There's still huge love for these, made a group about them a couple years ago now for a booming success, over 2k members and predominantly rwd, it's a play on the us turbo bricks, fastbricks. Some are fast some aren't but if you fancy getting into one definitely grab one they're reliable once you've given them the service they desire and don't really rust compared to say a sierra. Great video doing the car's justice, only note is pre 88 didn't come galvanized so watch out for areas direct to salt but still rare to get a very rotten one. Front floors, bits around the bulkhead to inner arch and battery tray are the key points and that's about it.

Great video. The 700 series has mostly been overshadowed by the 200 because the latter has (had) the edge when it comes to that ironic autumnal history teacher chic. I love my navy 740 GL and just need a fuel pump to get it back on the road. Two cars have crashed into it in the past, writing themselves off in the process. Comfortable, roomy, yes. But also, it handles really nicely. It's really precise, predictable and you always know where the limit is.

We had a 'signal red' manual 740GL estate, E485TUM reg, from 1990 to 2012. The 940s do have a very similar if slightly more modern feel, I understand the upgrade. The great thing about the 740 is you can go even more classic with a 240, or more modern with a 940. Either way you’re getting a great Volvo experience

I also own a '90 740 GL and live in Canada. I haven't seen a 740 in a scrap yard in my area for many years. When I need parts I generally go with new - Volvo of Toronto, FCP Euro or RockAuto. I have dealt with Chapman Motors in B.C. or Voluparts in Georgia. But when you figure in the cost of shipping it is sometimes more economical to go with new. ie: Chapman's wanted $70 for a used fender liner that I could buy new from V of T for $57! Plus V of T offered free shipping. Always best to shop around for your parts.
