Thank You for posting this. I have an 1994 850 turbo wagon that I've been driving for about two years. While out for a drive with my Wife, all of a sudden I notice this flashing arrow and then my car starts shifting really roughly. I checked the fluid level and it was fine. I saw this on KZbin and said this will never work. I have to say, IT WORKED!! I'll look into replacing the pnp sensor if it begins to happen more often, but I never had any trouble from the tranny before this. I'm very grateful to you for sharing you knowledge!!!

This worked for my 95 850 n/a! The arrow was flashing, along with the "winter mode" switch light. The car seemed like it lost first gear and was accelerating poorly. Just ratcheted the shifter up and down about a dozen times and voila! Thank you sir!

I know this problem from my Volvo 850 automatic too. It is either due to the throttle valve and/or fallen or porous hoses under the air filter housing. So always make sure that 1) the hose clamps are tight and 2) the hoses themselves are free of marten bites. If necessary, replace them and provide them with bite protection which I also recommend for the ignition cables.

....Thought my transmission was toast but saw this, tried it out & it's fixed - thanks! Just one query - is there a quick fix like this at all for an abs light that keeps flashing on. Spent alot of bucks getting a new module & it made no difference. Am about to sell this car & not wanting to spend any more on it. Seems to be electrical - have you ever had this trouble with your volvo Dean? Recommend anything?

ya i have the same problem. I cant really tell you what thats all about. i can usually fix or adjust anything but i think those sensors are so sensative that even if dirt gets on the sensor itself or the wheel that the sensor reads it turns it on. i dont drive this car much but if i did i would take out the dash and remove the abs light. i mean its just unreal that those are that sensative. well thats my take on it. hope this helps

While some of information is correct, some of it is not. Volvo's are designed for the harsh snowy & muddy climate that Sweden is known for. So, there's no way that Volvo's are "notorious for bad thermostats". If anything, when it's below freezing, you'll notice that your Volvo will be one of the few with an old battery, that still cranks on the first try with no problem. In general, a FLASHING up arrow, means that there's something wrong with the transaxle. It could simply mean that it's low on fluid. While I've never seen one of these miss-shift, you will lose fluid from a worn out rear main seal, via the transmission pump. The switch inside has 03 modes: 01.) economy, 02.) sport & 03.) winter. When the SOLID UP ARROW is displayed, you are in winter mode. This mean that, from a stand still, the vehicle will start out in SECOND gear. This is designed to prevent wheel slippage, when accelerating.

I would also like to add another possible culprit that actually has nothing to do with the transmission, but often manifests itself as such: the ignition switch. Yes, you heard me! The Volvo 850 ignition switch has several soldered cups which can develop fractures and result in a weak contact. The most common wire to have this partial failure is, IIRC, X2 which controls current through the PNP, among other circuits. The TCU gets bad signals and acts badly, sometimes wiggling the key helps...

i gt volvo 1995 850, has trble accelerting. flashing arrow and winter light was flashing. i was able to drive home. next day i tried it and less than a minute it didnt accelerate at all, it acted as if its on neutral, didnt reverse nothing. now i dont know what to try, i tried the gear trick, didnt work. got a video of the pnp switch? i cant afford to get my car fixed, so im trying to fix it. if it helps i cheked my oils got plenty transmission but my motor was low, i added oil no change.

About a month ago, I found out I had a leak in my turbo (I drive a '99 S70), I have an appointment to get it fixed in 4 days, but it was driving fine until recently. The last 2 days, the car has been "kicking" it would just randomly accelerate without me stepping on the gas any harder, a couple times, this happened when I was parked. My dad, who knows more about cars than me says it's the hole in the turbo causing this. Is it safe to drive for the next 4 days before my appointment?
