There are spacers within the clutch to adjust the gap. You can take the clutch apart and remove spacers until the clutch free play is less than 1mm. You can also preload the external springs by wrapping a zip tie around them to press the outer plate inward just enough. When the clutch wears and the gap gets too wide, the magnetic force isn't strong enough to bridge that wide gap and engage the clutch. Remove some internal spacers or preload those external springs to bring the outer plate in close enough so the magnetic force can engage the clutch.

Hi Jon. Thank you so much for your advice.

I attempted this recently on my old v70, while the gap is reduced the clutch utterly refuse to engage. The fuse and relay are working fine too, so either there’s a continuity issue or the coil is dead.

Agreed. Use zip ties on all 3 spokes. This has worked on over a dozen vehicles I've done this to. It'll last until the car's life is over...whenever that is. Be sure to test different sizes/thicknesses of zip ties so that the clutch still spins by hand...FYI - I don't know the factory spec, but I go with about 0.010" gap.

Any video for the zip tie fix?

What if the AC compressor is from 2010 model V70 Mk3. It doesn't have those springs.

My 04' xc70 has the same problem. At around 75% the A/C works good. When the temp goes up the A/C pushes hot air. For time being, I put 3 tie straps between clutch and springs and it works and pushes cold air. If they melt, I'll use some thin flat wire and do the same thing. On a 04' XC70 volvo, you have to drop the engine carriage to get at the a/c clutch..

The gap for the spacers(Shims) should be between 0.3-0.5 mm

I have question. Is this type of problem if its not fixed can brake belt?!?
@henrikloiske85728 ай бұрын
No...Only if the bearings in the compressor clutch is failing...
