As for the cars... 😂 the Core EX30 is probably the one I would choose of these two. But it was very interesting to see the BYD had both a decent consumption and comfort level, that was a bit of a surprise. Looking forward to more of these kind of comparisons. Citroen e-C3 versus GWM Ora Cat anyone?

I very like the design of the EX30. I picked the Dolphin, because it has more space and comfort than the EX30, and is about 40% cheaper (in Thailand). BYD Thailand has also the better dealer network than Volvo Thailand. I am happy with my Dolphin (6 months, 15,000 km).

I just find the Volvo ex 30 hard to justify the price. For example the one you have in the test is as expensive as a BYD seal awd or a tesla model 3. And compared to those three cars I wouldnt choose the ex30. You can add shortcut for the sign recognition atleast in the seal. Should work the same way in dDolphin. I really like this new concept of having your brother in the review. I think it would be a good addition having him in single car reviews aswell!

BYD was the worst performer in a big winter car comparison, I think of 14 cars (finnish car magazine Tekniikan Maailma). This yearly test is the biggest winter test in the world. EX30 was 6th and the winners were MB and BMW with +80k€ models.

@@Marvilalove Thats one aspect of owning a car. But what about warranty, comfort etc. For example a Volvo only got 2 year warranty vs 6 year of the BYD. If id want longest range for the price id choose a rwd tesla m3. But if I want a bit more comfort id choose a Seal.

One of the best comparisons made. Thank you. I think you get the car that suits your needs best and BYD is the better value but the Volvo is not bad as a value either if you go to the middle package. Good point about the different batteries because most people will charge to 80 if they don't have LFP batteries. Of course, if you charge at home it's OK to go to 100 percent. But it's slow.

You guys are good together a little bit more humor! Thanks for your review when you do these range reviews you should basically put the same tires on each car. I think the larger winter tires on the Volvo cause that to have less range I might be wrong but it's worth a try. I was hoping I could get 18 inch wheels on the Volvo ex30 instead of the 19 or 29 but Volvo is resisting that on the car. I'd like to see a comparison between the ex 30 Hyundai ioniq 5 or ionic 6

BYD comsumption sounds less than Volvo due to colder inside temperature (heater has its impact) and to eco mode (that cut the engine power) not present in Volvo (and it has double power than BYD). Another note is about the autonomy: it's true that LFP batteries can be charged 100% every day, but if you need to refill in fast mode along the hiway during long trips, you never want to go further than 80% due to the charge curve slope down. Last but not least BYD sounds more noisy. Nice format guys. Thanks for this review.

I agree that the Volvo isn't really affordable. The "core" with base battery and all for 37-38k is on the edge of "affordable". But add any extras and you might as well just buy the Tesla model 3 for the same amount of money. And as I do always bring up in my comments, currently the Tesla model 3 starts at 37k in some European markets. There the Volvo EX30 just doesn't make sense to me at all.

@algimantaszaltauskas4305 2 ай бұрын
@@ItsOnlyElectricIt's an option, don't get me wrong but as I've commented before, the pricing of the EX30 makes little to no sense. The "core" variant sits way too close, sometimes above the starting price of the Model 3. Which comes with more range and features as standard. So for me, I just don't see why anyone would choose the EX30 over a Model3 other than liking a Volvo brand name or disliking the Tesla brand name. If you start adding any options to the EX30, it becomes laughable in my opinion. The "ultra" trim is just absurdly priced. For anyone considering an "ultra" trim, for a similar price you could even go up to M3 long range, Seal, Polestar 2, Mach-e, EV6, Ioniq 5, Zeekr 001... which would all be around the same price as the EX30 "ultra" or less yet offer more features/range/luxuries/faster charging all as standard. And for people looking for an affordable EV, the MG4, BYD Dolphin, Model 3 (in the markets where it's cheaper, like in my country) some of the upcoming cars like the Renault R5 make more sense as they have lower entry prices. Overall it's an option but seems like not a very sensible one from a price point of view. It's best feature is the brand name, not the price nor the specifications.

An LFP battery does not "like" to be charged fully at all. It doesn't degrade as much as an NMC battery because the voltage fully charged is lower, but it is still better for it not to sit at 100%. The reason you should charge it to 100% regularly is so the BMS can keep track. The flat voltage curve of the LFP makes it trickier to measure the state of charge.
@nozarm10000
@nozarm10000 2 ай бұрын
You mean for balancing. LFP's can be charged 100% regularly. They have far less degradation than the other style of battery (compare the stand M3 to the LR M3 for example).

@@itekani "Like" is not a word for describing what a battery needs. Tesla recommends the LFP pack to be charged at least once a week to 100%. Leaving the battery at 100% over night or for a day or two does nothing in the long-run to the health of the battery. That's also a misconception. What harms the battery the most is temperature. Sitting in a very hot garage for example for days or weeks can eventually ruin a battery. But at this point in time, if a battery failure is going to occur, it's far more likely to happen due to a manufacturing defect than overuse, charging to full, etc. So it's a moot point and so overblown.

The problem with chinese brands at the moment is their resale value. Unfortunately, this goes down faster than with brand-name vehicles. In 5 years this depends on multiple factors. The success of the brand, quality, warranties and potential trade wars. Most of the factors are in the hands of the manufacturer. Yes. That's the reality for a lot of brands these days. 1/6 of the world's population is Chinese. So if you had to pick one?

Means absolutely nothing. Volvo is created in Sweden by a mostly European team of people. It's only constructed in China and that will move to Belgium in a few years.

@@benjaminsmith2287 How does it mean nothing when the platform Volvo ex 30 use is based on geelys Ev platform which is chinese based? So no its not only constructed in china.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 2 ай бұрын
@@UgglemannenFTW It's a platform. And the crazy thing is, the chief designer of that platform is Kent Ove Bovellan who is Swedish and is a former Saab engineer. Geely hired a Swedish engineer as their chief engineer (Google Geely SEA chief engineer). The bulk of the work done on the EX30 was done in Sweden. Geely Group is an umbrella of diverse brands but they are like VW Group. Some brands they make, others they only provide funding and platforms for. You know that Lamborghini uses a German platform for its SUV, right? And Volvo has used Japanese engines and transmissions. Volvos can be constructed in a number of countries but the directive for the specifications is done in Sweden. And the basic platform was tweaked and modified by Volvo. Porsche uses the same platform as VW but it doesn't result in the same performance because Porsche refines it a lot more. And Bentley too uses that VW platform and refines it to their specifications.

I'm very tempted by the model Y, but that would mean Elon Musk getting some of my money, and that's never going to happen. Of the two, I hhave sat in the EX30 and really, really didn't like it. No room in the back and I thought that the materials, although intended to look/feel expensive, just reminded me of the sort of vinyls we used to get back in the 70s. Nor do any of the lower specced models get a heat pump! I was so underwhelmed by the EX30 that I didn't even bother with a test drive. That would leave me getting the cursed FWD option, I suppose. Unfortunately for me, the nearest BYD dealer is over 80km away, so even that I won't be getting. So I keep coming back to the MG option. The 5 has good space, but is FWD, while the 4 has RWD. The good thing is that it looks like MG will be replacing the 5 quite soon with an estate version of the 4, which should do me fine. And then I saw the reports from the Geneva show and it looks like MG are going to be bringing a model Y competitor or 2 (MG9S is a hatchback SUV, while the MG9 is a saloon, and then there's the IM L6 which looks like exactly what I want). Those seem to be my options, unless BYD bring out a hatchback version of the Seal, or even, can I possibly hope for an estate version?

@@ItsOnlyElectric Yeah, that's what I've heard, maybe they'll do it? Personally, there are a few things I detest; Elon Musk SUVs Saloons(sedans FWD In that order, and I don't think that I'm the only one. I really think that Tesla would do far better without Musk. The model Y is simply too big, and the interior colour choices do not suit a hatchback at all, if it's ever going to be USED as a hatchback. Both white and black show up dirt terribly.
