Thank you for finally offering a visual of "the range of articulation" of these pods that even Volvo lacked. Nice!

They seem like Azimuth thrusters with twin-counterrotating propellers and an integrated rudder.

Very high tech. Definitely good for the weekend warriors. Experienced skippers can use traditional twins and thrusters with ease. Would I buy it...hell yes!

An estimate on the Yearly regular servicing cost would have been great. Especially service cost comparison with classic direct shaft drives would be really informative.

good, but how does fresh water rinsing of such an engine work?
@RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kula, There is no need to flush the engines with fresh water after use as they have sacrificial anodes in the cooling system to combat the effects of electrolysis. However occasional flushing by a mechanic to remove any weed or debris from the cooling system will cause no harm and can be beneficial.

What about Barnacles and such growths impinging on the Pod's rotational movement? Will this boat need more cleanings?
@RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland3 жыл бұрын
Hi Venture Fanatic. Volvo Penta recommend the use of prop-speed on the underwater section of the drive to reduce fouling. The design of the drive has a chafe plate between the hull mount and the pivoting section of drive that self-cleans as the drive turns port or starboard. When the boats are lifted for annual maintenance etc there is normally a visible clean patch in this area.

I heard that if you hit a sandbag it rips the pods out of the hull. Anyone had that experience?
@Smokeyr675 жыл бұрын
The lower pods are torn off, leaving the hull water tight. Shaft drives in the same situation will take out the shaft and leave the vessel with a point of ingress
@donaldwatson5543 жыл бұрын
From what I understand they turn 15° in either direction for a total travel of 30°.

Are pod drives exclusive to Volvo Penta engines or can they be mounted to any engine

The brand IPS only comes with Volvo Penta but there are similar systems from other manufacturers too e.g. Zeus.

Why does Joey from Friends talk with an ozzie accent and since when was he into boats?
@bobbuilder53626 жыл бұрын
Despite the insistence on the Volvo IPS for the 'new' Rivieras, the cruising range and fuel burn of these boats is nothing to brag about. Sure an IPS system can be more efficient ( add many variables here). Firstly we have to understand that efficiency and power are obviously two completely different things contrary to what this video suggested. There are many scenarios where a good shaft drive setup will reign supreme. The 30 % fuel saving is often thrown around but have yet to see any convincing data to suggest that is what you achieve on average. A typical Rivieras dry weight is too high relative to waterline length and they have far too much weight aft to accommodate the full beam masters. The shaft engines end up further aft, shaft angle increases, fuel burn increases. Although the IPS system improves the range and fuel burn it cannot make up for the fact that Rivieras are now simply floating appartments and not efficient long range cruisers. Lucky for the Yanks.

What is the life span of one of these generation 1 pod drives , I have been told they need to be rebuilt every 700 hours at a massive cost
@RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland7 жыл бұрын
IPS 1 has been through many iterations since the first ones were produced. So as far as lifespan goes, this varies on which generation IPS 1 the drives are how regularly they have been serviced. I would expect that most IPS 1's would need some investment above a standard service (at around 700 hours) to ensure they are reliable going forward. Although the drives cost more to service than a traditional shaft drive, the reduced running costs and other benefits mentioned in the video will be significant.

Volvo made their fortune on re-branding Detroit engines as something new and awesome and Swedish, that for some reason the rest of the world gladly shells out double numbers for to feel exclusive. But one thing they always focused on is safety, and I for one would prefer to NOT have a rope and debree-seeking set of props under my boat.. They didn't make the Azimuth and all existing pod drives backwards for a simple reason.
@ericrutledge46314 жыл бұрын

According to owners, incredibly expensive to maintain and a seal leak creates enormous issues and additional expenses in the thousands of dollars. A system that is 100% vulnerable due to that one seal failure...? Not likely very smart.
