Finally a non welding video on the Volvo 740! The ditch finder tyres were scary and the brakes dubious so this time we tackle those.

The amount of times I’ve been given the wrong parts and you don’t realise until you’ve got your car in bits 😤 Nothing worse than when there’s more than one option on specific parts and you have no clue which one to pick 😂

Eurocarparts. Also known as Your Wrong Car Parts. They had me going once with some rear pads on a Saab 9000. The pad that clipped into the caliper piston kept popping out but it looked identical to the old one. In the end I measured the spring with a vernier caliper and it was slightly oversized. I suspect they were fake parts, changed for another brand and problem solved. Never dealt with them much after that.

easy way to know what brakes you have, if you can have 14" wheels, that you have, you have the smaller ones up till early 88-, the bigger ones that came late 88- require 15". another cool thing, if you wish to have the bigger ones, all you need is bigger rotors and caliper holders. and ofc 15" wheels.

I love videos of car repairs from UK or Irish youtubers because it feels so much more relevant than the US channels. I’m impressed at your dedication to work outside and film it all in this weather. It’s a pain when you buy parts and they are wrong, it happens to me all the time, so much that I stopped buying stuff on eBay and now support local motor factors. I’d love one of those inductive heaters, I remember when I first saw one on wheeler dealers and was impressed.. having said that I’m convinced that a squirt of penetrating oil would have dome the trick, but you would have had to leave it a while to do its thing.... now I’m going to Amazon to look for inductive heaters!

Front brakes are one of the very few things on all 700 and 900 models subjected to nearly random change. The second thing coming to mind are instrument clusters in the 900: Two different manufacturers, -1992, 1993/4, and from 1994. None of them interchange easily. Ask, how i know...

Great video, nice explanation of pad and disc changes and the patience of a saint with part non compatibility. I only use Eurocarparts as an absolute last resort, had so many wrong spares from them. They always cover themselves with the 'more than one part for this vehicle' statement. I use a local independent motor factors, staffed with people who know what they're doing and on the rare occasion there are 2 similar parts, they give both with a free return policy. Always find them less expensive and the quality of consumables better too despite ecp huge 'discounts' promotions.

The only tracking setting that matters is the sum of the toe on the left and the right wheel. When you turn the steering wheel, one gets bigger and the other smaller so, unlike all the other alignment settings the absolute value on either wheel is just telling you which way the steering wheel is slightly pointing. If it's toe in then it tends to wear the outside of the tyres. As UK roads slope down to the left, you're normally steering slightly to the right, so the outside of the left hand tyre wears most. If it's toe out then it's tending to wear the inside and again, as you're steering to the right, it's the inside of the right hand tyre that wears most. If you point your hands in or out a bit and then picture dragging them along a surface it starts to make sense.

That disc did indeed not have any oil or grease on it. More discs now are given that matte finish, which is a light layer of electroplating (I think) that protects the disc without the need for grease. The electroplating simply wears off the first few times you use the brakes. Keeps the disc hat looking fresh for longer as well.

My late Uncle had the very same 5-large-hole steel wheels on his Powder Blue 1982 (X reg) 245 GLE Estate. I didn't know they were carried over to the 740. The earliest 2.3 GL/GLE (B to D plate) 740's were given a completely new steel-wheel design. 14 inch 10-square-hole design, usually coming with bright trim rings and bright dog-dish centre covers. So maybe these older wheels made their return when the 2.0 litre 740 came out mid '87 I'm sure.

Oh, and @ 2:07 to 2:25 I could smell that strong, unmistakeable Cellulose paint just by watching you paint the wheels. Eurocar parts are famous for getting parts wrong, you can give them the reg no, the vin number and they will still supply the wrong parts. It does help if you have seen the original parts or take the old ones for comparison. Mind you they then tell you they don't have any of those till tomorrow / next week, ect, etc. Buy yourself a decent breaker bar and some deep impact sockets, they make changing wheel and jobs like that far easier, Saves you hands and back.

To make caliper access easier you should have put steering on full lock to the left.

I hear some clanking from the engine, to adjust the valveclearence you need to change metaldistances underneath the camshaft, those could be bought one by one from Volvo back when they kept all parts for them. I once adjusted mine by measuring the gap, checking the tolerance in the manual and then removing the distances on the ones who was off, I could reuse some but move them to the corresponding valve that gave the right gap and bought a few new ones. I seem to recall there where thickness stampings on the underside. But You probalbly can see how to in a Haynes manual. Now, it can be the rodbearings too, but...

Bearings on only 140,000 miles? its barely run in! I don think it sounds as smooth on the video as it does in real life but worth checking when I do the rocker gasket

@@furiousdriving nah, the rodbearings should be okey with those miles, but the late B200-230 got narrower bearings in an attempt to lessen the fuelconsumption, those rods aren't good for enhanced tuned engines. But for a standard engine they should be more than adecvate.

Maybe it looks cool, but it destroys its uniq feature - floaty comfort. I live in Europe, where roads are in a very bad condition, and you know what, my 740 eats up every bump like some of the old Mercedes. I have owned so many cars from Mercedes, BMW, VW, Audi and right now i have newer Volvos, but these old ones with their original suspension are brilliant. And suspesion is one of the reasons i kept my 740 turbo, because i can just fly over bumps and holes, it just just dont feel them, so if you want to slam a car, use the right way with air suspension and ride hight contorl.
