I must say it amazes me to learn that this turbo was not dismantled and cleaned completely. You have to decarbonize the exhaust side of the turbo. And probably even change the bearings.

My uncles boat running twin TAMD41A. Starboard engine started bellowing black smoke when he went above 1500 rpm. He shut it down right away and ran back to the mooring on the port side engine. I took the air filter off to find the turbo was stuck. Had to use a socket to free it up by gently moving it back and forth. The exhaust side was badly caked with soot that was restricting the exhaust flow. It does not take much to stop a turbo from spinning at startup. I cleaned the exhaust side with a pick, an old flat blade screwdriver and a vacume cleaner to catch all the caked on soot. It works fine now. If you start bellowing black smoke like this. You have to shut down as soon as possible to have any chance of saving the turbo. The longer you go, the hotter the oil in the bearing will get and it will just gum up and stuff the bearing.

Why will the bearings be needing oil if it's not spinning? I dont understand why the oil will get hotter and hotter. Would you please explain? Have a great day!
@Tekrunner26
@Tekrunner26 2 ай бұрын
The exhaust is still going through the turbo even though it is not spinning. This will make the bearing get hot and as the oil is not flowing because it’s not spinning, it will cook the oil in the bearing and glue it up.

This has happened to my 2002 AD41-P twice over the past 20 years. I have successfully cleared it out without damage by removing the turbo by unbolting from the intake side. the turbo with the blades will slide out as a unit from the exhaust elbow. Once the turbo is removed, you can get in the elbow and carefully grind away the corrosion with a Dremel tool using a stone grinder end. Once the circle of the exhaust race is smooth and clean again, try popping the turbo back in and check for free spin. Sometimes there is still a spot or two to grind away. Now I have my turbo working better than ever. This must be a common problem, since there is salt water on the exhaust side that corrodes the iron. If you let the boat sit too long without using the turbo, the corrosion invades the blades, and they lock up. Also, replace the 5 or 6 bolts holding your turbo to the elbow using stainless steel.

yes I had exactly the same problem with my TAMD 41 2 or 3 times .... before starting I check if the air turbine is running well, and if not a little WD40.

Yea thats exactly what happens. Regular use is the key. I also fitted fresh water flush valves to my seawater side to flush the salt water out after use

I had a similar issue w/ a TAMD74 turbo. I was told by an old diesel mechanic to use diesel fuel. Let it sit then I used a little wire wheel on a a drill to clean it out. Used a vacuum to suck it all out. Then used some liquid wrench to let it dissolve some as well. No more problamo!!

Takk for videoen.

This is a common issue. I have been told the rear housing corrodes from the salt water and wears the blades down over time causing loss of boost. Mine looked extremely carboned up but then as I used it the carbon came off and the gap got bigger. The boost dropped off so I had to replace the turbo. I have fitted fresh water flush valves for the Saltwater system and will take the boat for a run weekly and hopefully this avoids it happening again. Letting it sit for long periods is bad for them.

Oven cleaner work a treat on the exhaust part of the turbo……but you have to remove it to do it properly.If you remove the air filter housing you can us a cordless drill and a socket to move the turbo….

Great vid Steffen, glad to see you getting the turbo working again. I can only recommend you to get a new turbo from Greg before next season, I changed mine this summer and it makes the engine stronger in the mid-range. Shouldn't you get about 3.800-3.900 rpm at full speed on that engine, or is that just for the KAD42?

What is your boost pressure ? That is the critical piece. That turbo should most likely be replaced. I am replacing both my Turbos on my TAMD74P-A motors due to delayed spin up from defective wastegate.

Do not idle a modern diesel for more than 10 minutes. Start it, let it warm for 10 min then operate under light throttle until fully warmed up on the temp gauge. After that operate as normal. This turbo is coaked from idling too long.

Kanskje du kjører med for tung propell....da vil motoren alltid gå for tungt og sote..... Men.... Det er ikke unormalt med litt sot da huset er vannkjølt og vil ikke brenne seg rent....

Just spray MR Muscle owen and grill foam into the exhaust side. Wait an hour and start , drive hot open again spray again and wait. Start again , driving hot. Spary again and wait, start and drive

You can remove the Turbo and have it machined out and a stainless steel sleeve fitted to take care of corrosion .

I would not wait but take it apart and clean it. I think the liquids for "cleaning in place" do work but since you have so much thick deposits, I would not trust those cleaning agents. It wouldn't be good if a large flake of crap hit a turbine blade at high speed. Mechanical cleaning isn't that hard to do.

Looks to me like an over-fueling issue, most likely a bad injector.
@matui6983

Its a worldwide problem with pretty much any turbo regardless of engine make or model esp ones used in saltwater. The salt air causes the cast-iron exhaust housing to "bloom" esp after the engine has been run then let sit for a while. Make no difference if its a watercooled housing or non watercooled exhaust housing. As somebody already commented a properly machined and radiused stainless sleeve can be inserted into the housing.

hi@all... modern diesel is full of vegetable bio oil shit. use the best stuff you can buy and drive it empty every 8 weeks. put 1:500 outboard 2stroke oil to the diesel for better selfcleaning. this is pretty good for the injektionpump ! regards....

Worst diagnostic skills I've ever seen here. Your turbo is coked up badly on the exhaust side; forcing it to run at speed is probably wearing down the vanes on both inlet and outlet sides. You can and should carefully--carefully!--chip away at the coking with fine tools and picks, with a vacuum hose positioned right there to suck up the debris and keep it from falling into the works. But that turbo needs some professional attention STAT.

Thanks for nice reply on my skills 🥰 The turbo has been working fine after I got it running, but I know it needs some professional attention. As long it works great now, I can wait until off-season.
