Known by a few names, the "Von Flue Choke" is a great defense against a guillotine from side control.

I won a pro mma fight with this choke on Sunday so it does work, sometimes when you shoot a double leg and the guy tries to guilotine you land him in side control and before he let's go of your neck you can trap the arm and start working the choke. It's a great sub and does work if you know how to do it properly. Keep up the good work Submissions 101.

That's why I'm watching this too. I lost my fight last night because of this choke. I've been in MMA and BJJ for 10 years, and this is the first time anybody has done that to me. I never thought it was that affective until he locked it in.

Yo this is literally perfect for those newbies that just hold you in a head lock and don't let go as if their life depends on it, I was wrestling in school for fun and this guy didn't have any grappling experience except "wrestling with the bros" and he just got me in that headlock (I was still new to BJJ) and he didn't let go, I was on top and eventually won but my ear turned blue and swelled, next time I'll definitely try this out

My Gunnery Sgt showed us this choke when we were in MCMAP going for our green belt. One of the most useful maneuvers he showed us and I loved it. Shoulder choke, calf crusher, karmura, Americana, and triangle chokes are my favorites.

In my school we drill this escape. The key here, countering the guillotine, is to pass to side control before the choker closes the guard. Once the choker establishes full guard it is pretty hard to escape the guillotine. I find this counter to be the best way to defend against the guillotine, definitely a high percentage escape if done properly.

also opens up [side control bottom] for an arm triangle, most people wont tap, but they will let go, the moment they do, drive your head to the floor and the arm triangle is pretty much there for the taking

One detail... particularly if you're broad shouldered. While you're pressing your shoulder, you should also be twisting your upper body to where your left shoulder, your right shoulder, and your right elbow form a straight line. Why? Because that forms a second stability point if your shoulders are broad enough. If your shoulders are broad enough, this will produce a stability point where you have secured his right forearm. since you can't pull any farther. This means that your right shoulder is now being pressed forward from 2 stability points. One on the floor, and one from his forearm.Two stability points means it's much easier to maintain pressure, and easier to choke deeper.

@TheIjames The rule of thumb is to let go of the guillotine when someone has cross side position on you. If you type in "Von Flue Choke" you find the video of Jason vs Alex in the UFC. Hope that helps!

Von Flue is a person who used a shoulder choke from side control. Von Blut is a maneuver occasionally used in Berufsringen, and later in MMA. He did not invent the choke, he merely used it to TKO somebody, leading to the massive confusion of today (It'd be like if Kimora used a kimura, we'd all be confused) . My friend Colin Reichardt was a wrestling champion in Germany, he explained this to me at great length. Wikipedia it if you want. Allo, history here, clarifying your erroneous assumptions.

what you can do is, when you shoot in keep your arm up so your outside shoulder is up and next to your ear. I get caught up like that alot. Keeping my shoulder and arm up and not grabbing the back of his leg has helped alot. Keep your arms like that and fully commit to the takedown.

I may be wrong, but i think the difference is that with an arm triangle, you are using carotid control, cutting off the blood flow to the brain, whereas this choke is cutting off air. It's also a lot more painful than a carotid choke.

Also just an add on, when you hug down on their shoulders to release the pressure of the guillotine use your body weight as leverage and be careful not to work yourself deeper into the choke. Also, you can use your knee against the back of his knee to make the take down easier, especially against a resisting opponent.
@Submissions101
@Submissions101 17 жыл бұрын
No Evan, the fact that you have side control makes the guillotine not very effective because the leverage isn't there (ie: in full guard using your legs to stretch them out.)

Wikipedia Chokehold. Or Kata gatame (an extremely similar shoulder choke from side control that fell out of favor because of difficulty of use), Kesa-gatame, or shoulder choke, et cetera ad nauseum, and you will see that he did not invent it. Yes, many people call it that because he popularized it. Just because many people do something doesn't make it right- many people cross their ankles during a straight armbar. Hell, Würgegriff von Blut is literally German for "blood choke".

remember watching this choke for the first time and and thinking there is always one new trick around the corner. it's the "principal vs. technique " argument all over again. you break it down to the principal, in this case blood flow to the brain, and endless techniques can follow, only imagination limits the fighter. hell i remember watching keith hackney use a ranger/ tiger claw choke on joe son waaaay back in ufc history. great times in mma these days my friends, quantum leaps happening

Yeah, he was in my guard, so it wasn't this move technically, but he's really good at the sort of general technique of driving into the neck and squeezing the opposite shoulder. You're right, it was creating the pressure of a choke, but not a full choke... I had to expend energy to get him away from me. BTW, love your videos. =)

@AZrider47 This isn't really intended for people starting out in side position. It's actually supposed to happen during a full on (no arms trapped) guillotine in full guard. There's a special way of posting up and shaking out While choking them. Then go to this part

You can do this if they pull guard as well, by looking towards their body to take the pressure off and standing upright but sprawled, with all of your weight on your choking-shoulder.
@Submissions101

Not so. It isn't about persistence. Its understanding leverage and body mechanics. That is why %99.9 of all jiu jitsu teachers will tell you to LET GO of the guillotine when you are on the bottom and your opponent is ON TOP in SIDE CONTROL. The person on top has leverage, body weight and technique on their side. I suggest joining a Jiu Jitsu gym and trying out your hypothesis with 20 students and see what occurs. Some people dont get video instructionals and just have to 'feel' it to believe it.

@TheIjames Of course it's a good prevention because you'd seek to move your body to the opposite side of the head as a matter of course when caught in a guillotine, regardless of trying any submission. They'd be stupid to keep trying for the guillotine from that position as it's near impossible to finish.

As long as he doesn’t land on the side of Nate’s choking hand, he can get out of the guillotine. I’ve personally submitted many people who wouldn’t let go of the choke by using the Von Flu Choke on them but if you land on Nate’s choking hand side, it’s over.

this is not a triangle based choke, it looks like it but its not. you dont even haveto lock your arms, its just better defense to do so. You just have to have the blade of your shoulder in his neck and bridge so your upper body weight is focussed on your shoulderblade its more of a pressure choke.
