The answers to the practice questions are below. Just click on "Read more". Thanks for watching and considering subscribing. Also don't forget to join the new Discord server! Question 1: C Question 2: C (*Does not include the market as a ring, the first ring would be dairy/market gardening) Question 3: 1) Due to advancements in preservatives, refrigeration, and technology dairy and other perishable goods can be produced farther away from the market. 2) Globalization has allowed for farmers to trade around the world, and for countries to import and export agricultural products. 3) Industrial farming has reduced the amount of land needed for livestock 4) New specialty crops have been introduced into markets 5) Lumber is no longer needed as a heat source or cooking source Question 4: The bid-rent theory looks at how land prices change in relation to the urban area. Land near urban areas will be more expensive while land farther away from the urban area will be cheaper. This is why in Von Thunenn's Model we see agricultural practices that require more land are farther away from the market, and agricultural practices that require less land can be located closer to the market. This is also why we traditionally have intensive agricultural practice near an urban area and extensive agricultural practices farther away. Question 5: 1) If we look at the spatial layout of the United States today we can see that generally the model still works (If you have New York as the Market) 2) We still see agricultural practices that require more land located farther away from the urban areas 3) We still see agricultural production that is more perishable and more difficult to transport closer to the market

so forgive me if i get this wrong but. Shouldn't dairy farming be further away and be extensive? Cows need more land to graze and produce milk (especially in the 1800s) so how would dairy farming be so close to the market? also wouldn't dairy farming and ranching/livestock fall under the same category?
@MrSinn
@MrSinn 2 жыл бұрын
Dairy farming is closer because the milk will go bad if it takes too long to get to the market, especially in the 1800s. You need to be able to get your product to the market as soon as possible. Even today it is expensive to transport perishable products over long distances, due to the amount of refrigeration needed to keep the food fresh. Ranching and livestock can have cows walk to the slaughter house, so transportation is cheap. Causing it to be located farther away from the city.

@@MrSinn that is true. Obviously milk will spoil if it doesn't get to the market in time. But my question is how did people get milk so close to the market in the first place? Cows used for milk must have been crammed closer to the market right? Which doesn't make sense because cows and other livestock need more land (isn't dairy farming extensive?).

Question, what would be a few flaws about the model?
@luvdosin9250
@luvdosin9250 2 жыл бұрын
In the modern world, some flaws of the model is that due to the innovations of technology, it created food preservation and refrigerators for perishable goods such as dairy. That's why dairy farms are located in the first ring of the model. However, now in the future, perishable goods can be located further away. Also, globalization kinda contradicts the mode since it was made in the 1800s. Disregarding the modern era now, I think a flaw would be that the model states that the physical environment is uniform and similar but some regions and countries have different physical geography so I guess that's a flaw. I hope that makes sense
