Listen to it! I'd been to a bunch of airshows and heard the beautiful sound of a Merilin a few times before but when I went to Reno years ago and heard the sound of a Merlin being pushed hard it was a little frightening. I love seeing'hearing them at the airshows and i really hope we'll all be seeing/hearing them 50 years from now! Wow what music!

Put the guns back in for a really interesting race lol
Beautiful landing under what looked like engine-out conditions. Great sideslip/crabbing to lose altitude and get to the right glideslope, and perfect crab kick at the end to get it down and level. Even coasted it off the runway and out of the way. Awesome piloting, far more so than what's required to win a race - getting a crippled racer down like that is a serious feat. Attaboy!
@dsbennett5 жыл бұрын
Makes me wonder why so many small aircraft crash simply because of engine failure.
@spannaspinna2 жыл бұрын
It’s not hard you get hammered with engine out landings when you’re learning to fly , you’ll never be able to solo unless you can do a tidy engine out landing and execute a decent side slip to lose altitude in a hurry it’s not difficult
@ArchTeryx002 жыл бұрын
@@spannaspinna Way too many pilots take these drills for granted and sudden loss of engine power when you're flying a racing plane is a bit of a different beast than when your C172 engine quits - deceleration forces are stronger and you're far lower altitude. That's a more difficult recovery to execute, and this pilot ran a clinic on dealing with a low-altitude engine-out situation.
@spannaspinna2 жыл бұрын
@@ArchTeryx00 yes but you also have a lot of airspeed which can be readily converted to altitude , altitude buys time and options
@ArchTeryx002 жыл бұрын
@@spannaspinna Yep and that's exactly what he did. Plus, the one advantage of being in a race is that you're right next to the airfield. If you can get altitude enough to glide, you have plenty of time to get lined up and take it in. Plus (IIRC) the race is yellow-flagged if someone loses an engine and resumed when they are clear of the course.

We live on the other side of the mountains from the Reno air races location. We drive over the hills in my Jeep and watch the show every year. I picked an area were the jets make their turnouts. They get pretty low in that spot. I've taken some really great photos over the years. Even got many pilots to wave back. Best one was we got buzzed by two F22's just skimming the tops of the little trees out there, the roar was so loud thought they'd crack the windows in my Jeep. Great video.

SixStringLove Guy Actually they used to race on a larger course (9+ miles) but with all the encroachment of homes and businesses they had to slowly shorten the course. Have my guesses but I'd like to hear it from someone who knows. My guess is that they're cleaning out any carbon and any engine contaminates from the idle in and to ensure oil pressure was up to fill the oil passages before shut down. I would think that's what they're doing that for. I'm basing what I know on what they do for steam engines, which are radically different than these engines, but from what I know, if an engine is hard at work, regardless of what they run on, they'll do a relatively good job at keeping themselves clean.

Why do the piston engine aircraft run their engines hard after landing when stationary prior to shutting down the engine?
@Voodoo16503 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons they run the engines up is to help clear the plugs, taxiing for long periods and running the engine at low power settings fouls the plugs, so running the engine up helps clear them, this helps for when starting the next time.

No, in fact an interesting true anecdote from the biography of Rolls-Royce tells that when they sent the blueprints of the Merlin over to Packard (who were probably the US's finest automobile maker and produced exquisite cars) the reply came back that they simply didn't have the tooling to produce tolerances as fine as specified. RR acquiesced to some relaxation of the design in less critical areas. From the book "The History of a Name".

Some planes have pressurized air to start and idling the engine doesn't give enough air to start it again. So, they run it up to build pressure, then shut it off. Not sure about these but it's very common on radials
@bottomshot45466 жыл бұрын
radial engines use a dry sump oil system, and the RPM is raised for a brief period to scavenge the oil from the engine sumps back to the main tank in order to reduce the likelihood of liquid or hydraulic lock. see page 64 www.sandersaeronautics.com/library/general/Warbird_Notes-02Dec2011.pdf

What's with all of the Sea Furys? How many are operating today?

I guess enough were sold by the Canadian AF and people bought them up. Nice to see them at the races at least, they're quite a plane.

A lot of them were found by david Tallichet in Iraq some years ago along with apparently 40 tons of spares.

so what caused the engine to blow, sucked valve or a rod?
@Voodoo16506 жыл бұрын
This mayday was an issue with the piston rings, they weren't sealing like they should've and was causing the oil to be sucked out, you can see a lot of oil being dumped overboard and instead of completely destroying the engine Steve pulled out and brought her back. There wasn't a whole lot of oil left after this race.
