Thank you. That’s great to hear. I spent more than a day focusing on visual examples and verbiage.

I remember learning VOR's when I was really young in FS1.0 - I had just learned decimal numbers and started understanding how to use the OBS's. Tbh I hated them but they worked OK with a DME... I was just so happy when ADF's came to planes.
@thecorporatepilotdad Жыл бұрын
My first experience with them was in a Cessna 152 in the mid 90s. VORs were confusing but with a little practice they became easy. Navigating with an ADF is tougher but still easy with practice. NDBs are just about all gone but with the technology we have today, there isn't a need for NDBs. What year would you have played FS 1.0? Also, I see you've been a subscriber for over 2 years. Thank you for that!

@@thecorporatepilotdad No problem! It was around 1983. Graphics, sounds, everything, it was all just .. bad. But it was Something !! By the 90's the sim really improved significantly. When I took my first discovery flight in training, I was extremely comfortable with the plane.

Finally understand how to use VOR

Awesome to hear that! VORs are quite simple with a little bit of practice.

This is the first thing I have watched that made me understand this easily! Thank you! Have you made a video about calculating fuel burn in flight for a diversion?

I have not but it is good to hear you found value in the VOR video. A lot of time went into that video.

i have questions what is VLOC, NAV(green light) and GPS what is mean if show or turn off
@thecorporatepilotdad Жыл бұрын
That just shows where the source to the VOR receiver is coming from. VLOC is VOR or LOCalizer and GPS would be when the mode is changed to GPS, if equipped. As far as NAV (the green light), that would be the same as VOR or LOC as far as I know. I cannot find any supporting data to show there is a difference.

I understand VOR's however, Trying to do this under the hood flying by instruments only and holding my headings, altitude to ACS standards. I can manage to tune the two From VOR's but trying to graph two lines on my Foreflight or paper maps to find my position is super difficult for me. I end up loosing my heading or altitude as I am under instrument. I can only take my eyes off the instruments for like 2 seconds at a time and that's not enough time for me to even try to start the graph line. Easy on the written exam but super hard doing it when flying under the hood. Is there any tricks to this. I have my Private Pilot check-ride coming up and need to find my position under the hood and stay in ACS standards.

Practice in the airplane with your instructor. Don’t focus on tuning and finding the radial, but do so in short segments. 1-2 seconds can be spent turning the OBS knob/finding the radial at a time, then go back to the instrument scan and repeat. Also, make sure the airplane is properly trimmed and in straight and level flight.

Good luck on your checkride!

Its very confusing, when you say intercept raidal xxx, does that mean from or to? inbound or outbound? am buzzed
@thecorporatepilotdad Жыл бұрын
Radials are expressed as from the VOR. Even when flying to a VOR, the airplane is on a radial in terms of position from the station. If flying to a VOR on the 180 course to the station, the aircraft is on the 360 radial.

Finding my position using two vor's under the hood is not easy. I manage to turn both VOR's with a From. But the graphing on the chart while on instrument. I have to do it quickly, yet I can only take my eyes off the instruments for 3 seconds. Take me a very long time. Help.
@thecorporatepilotdad3 ай бұрын
Sorry for the long delay in answering your comment. Practice the process and do each step in segments with your main focus on flying the airplane - always fly the airplane, always. For example, get the radial from the VOR on the panel, scan instruments, find the VOR on the chart and hold your finger/pencil on it, scan instruments again, then draw the line from the VOR. If you have MSFS or any PC sim, that would be a great place to practice being quicker in the airplane. Also, make sure the airplane is trimmed before starting the process.

Short sweet and complete! Did you ever fly with a DCE computer? Back when I flew DC-9’s ( the Jurassic jet, ) the DME would only give you distance no ground speed readout! You had to compute that! However the Convair 580 (The Convair, a Sauris) was modernized with a KN64 DME. 😁🛫
@thecorporatepilotdad Жыл бұрын
I never flew with a DCE computer. Rental aircraft I flew had no DME with a single VOR, DME, or LORAN C. One airplane did have an archaic GPS that was mind blowing at the time in the late 90s.

"Don't want to fly over an ex-girlfriend's house" 🤣🤣🤣 I remember actually learning the old school navigation techniques in a previous sim version. I've gotten lazy in the current sim though and use the Garmins. 😁 May be time to go back to some VOR flying.
