I agree. They are both the same under the hood, the only difference is that the R8 gives you the arrows, and is that worth $400.00? Are you getting a $400.00 increased performance with the arrows? I suspect not. if it's warning you, you should slow down regardless of where the police radar is?

I have been using R3’s for a long time as well, I got an R7 and just got an R8 to replace an R3, once I got used to the arrows in one car I had to have it in the other. I freaking love knowing where the alert is coming from.

If it’s coming toward me and I’m on a divided highway (I’m in TX) I just slow down enough to keep them from being willing to turn around, if it’s steady and behind me I slow down. Can’t say anything about laser, I doubt the performance is significantly better than the R3, it’s worth mentioning both the R7 and R8 get almost zero false laser alerts.

I would have 100% agreed before my last ticket. Yes it’s an insane amount when you haven’t gotten a ticket before but let me run down the cost. I was in Illinois and got a speed ticket, $168 for the ticket and about $600 in insurance and renewal cost. I chose to fight it and paid $300 for an attorney, if I win it will only be $300, if not my attorney has got me a plea deal which will be an additional $300, it will be off my record and no insurance cost but I’m still at $600 total not including time off work. Yes it’s a large amount to spend for not having any charges, but when you really compare it to not having a single ticket it’s a good price, now compare it to multiple tickets and your cost only increases exponentially. Honestly for having top of the line assurance I would gladly pay $1200 to have the best peace of mind that I will be a free man.

I agree that the R4 is a tremendous value. I ran my original R3 for 8 years & still have it in my stable. But, since the R7 came out I started putting aside a little pocket change here/there & a couple of months ago popped on an R8 which the pocket change I'd been saving up. The arrows are 100% worth the extra money if you can afford it. Took me a minute to get used to the bigger physical size of the R8 over the R3, but after that I have no regrets.

When your on the road and your detector blows up, I'm not looking at the arrow to tell from where I'm being painted. I immediately check my speed and slow down, regardless where it's directed from. Save the cash and get the R4,( I have one) it's worth the $300.00.

I bought my 1st Uniden R3 after your review over 2 years ago. It still works great and keeps me informed of my driving area. All Laser warnings are just tokens to be aware. Nothing can prevent Laser. But the radar ranges? My best so far with the R3 is two miles on a highway. :)

I use to think that if I was hit with Lazer it was to late to slow down until one time when I was driving home from picking up a buddy from sea tac Airport at 2 am doing 85 on I-5 and my escort 9500ix went off indicating Lazer, I immediately slowed down and I saw the cop in the median and figured the jig was up but no he stayed put and I made it home with no citation. It was 2 am and at that time of the morning they are going to pull you over for anything just to see if your intoxicated but if you're doing 85 in a 60 you're at least getting a ticket. So don't believe your Lazer alerts don't buy you any time.

I opted for an R3. It's not the newest, but it has reach. I pick them off over a mile away on the highway. Between that and Waze reports not many issues. Only thing that can be an issue is the motorcycle cops. lol, they are the worst. Luckily, no problems yet.

Recently, I decided to buy one more detector and probably the last one for now. I purchased an r8. It is the best detector ever. One thing i noticed is that some people who did personal reviews complained about the build quality. A couple people said their R8s broke when the suction cup let go and the detector came crashing down and broke. So, i took a 6-inch piece of clear fishing line that you barely see and tied one end to the latch of the sun visor and the other end to the suction cup so, if the suction cup lets go, the whole unit will only fall a couple inches and dangle there till i remount it. Just a little insurance policy

I have both R4 and R8, in my options the R4 perform better than R8 though, I travel from Ohio to Florida with my R8, and also travel from Ohio to Boston with the R4, to me the R4 pick up the signal just a little sooner on the hilly or curly highway or road better than the R8 and the R4 still can pick up the signal from behind and side too, if you get use to how the radar work and don't need the arrow, I think R4 is would be the best on the market now

Good video. The R4 is just a ridiculous value at $299. We've got a couple R3 units and an R7, the R4 offers a significant step up in performance and it seems quieter around town, too. I bought the R4 about a month ago. I thought it would just be in my daily driver for a couple weeks. I think it's found a new, permanent home on my windshield.

I love the fact that the R4 has a good alert distance on the 90-degree angle. Although it doesn't happen a lot around here, the state police do shoot from the side on the interstates sometimes. My R7 doesn't alert you until you are right on top of the radar. Side detection is minimal on the R7, as with most detectors. Plus, with the tough terrain around here, I need the maximum alert distance possible. I would love to see a test result with the R8 on a 90-degree angle. In theory they should be the same, since they are pretty close under the hood.

Radar and laser don’t work from the side. You can Google cosine angle to learn why. Could you clarify what you mean by the side, exactly? You mean parked on the side of the road shooting front and rear like normal?

I've owned my R7 for 2 years and my unit's forward arrow no longer works. It only points to the sides or rear. So if the arrows stop working, no longer worth the extra cost.

I got the R8 little over a week ago and I'm honestly disappointed. Coming from using an old Beltronics STI Magnum so I was expecting a HUGE difference. The way everyone made it seem, this was basically the best radar detector around. I was pretty excited to use it but it's not worth $750 (what i paid with taxes). So many false alerts, the camera alerts seem to come at last minute even though they're set to alert 1000ft out. The arrows are awesome (when they work right) but they seem to sporadically miss-alert which direction the radar is coming from, perhaps it has to do with a design flaw considering the rear radar appears to be blocked by the front hump. Why don't the side arrows show what specific side, right or left, not just display both arrows? Too many negatives for the price. Had such high hopes, but I will definitely be returning it! R7 seems better for the price (only for the arrows) but if you don't care for the arrows R4 appears like the best choice around.

The arrows don't seal the deal for me. It's really simple, if the detector goes off slow down just like you would with any detector. When it stops alerting for a sufficient amount of time you can speed up. If you're being tagged what does it matter where they are at? Unless you would like to wave at them.

the R8 in my real world test out did the R4 in real world hands on laser hits the R4 were I live were there are lots of motorcycle cops who just use laser is toast.
