Making a Water Bottle Rocket Launcher | VQC

Instead of launching fireworks this 4th of July, I'll be launching some water bottle rockets!!!
This was a project I worked on in high school, but fell upon a much better way to construct the launcher.

Always dry fit the PVC pipe before applying glue, use a magic marker, make a mark on each piece where it lines up. I have assembled lots of PVC and this little trick lines up everything flush, no leg or other pipe not lying flat, nothing out of line. This glue can set very quick, before you can get it lined up correctly, trust me that ain't good.

In order to stop losing water when you put the rocket on, you could just flip the launch pad and then put the rocket on, then flip it back so water will not leak . That’s what I did.

This is a fantastic launcher but is there another option besides using a cut 2-liter soda bottle for the "springboard"? In the past, the string has cut through the springboard making it useless. I have been trying to think of an alternative - ideas?

i used a spring from a sprinkler head. works great, the only issue now is that the paracord ,that use to pull the spring down is somewhat use less so i do have to manually pull the lock down

i also used a cap from Califia Farm milk on the lock to keep the spring from passing through the lock. Drilled a hole to pass the pvc though and it's perfect. I have to think about how to get enough force to pull the spring down without having manually pull on it. I get pretty soaked every time.

Hi Abbie! In the video description there is a link to a video that has a more detailed list of the materials used as well as the lengths of the PVC pipe. A tire valve is what's used to pump air into the bottle (through the PVC stand). I was able to find that at an auto part store. I think I went to AutoZone for that, but any auto store should have it.

What PSI did you launch at?

The dial on the pump I was using was definitely inaccurate. I would say it was between 40-60 psi. I tried to max it out without losing too much water before releasing the rocket.

You can fashion and rig a "U" Clip made of clothes hanger wire. You still need the 1-1/2 PVC Coupler to stick the bottle neck into.. research others u Tubes.. you'll find the U Clip method too.

I'm not sure if a bicycle tube will work or not. I'm sure if the connection is air tight and the hole drilled into the PVC cap is the same diameter as the valve your planning to use it should work. I used a valve I found at AutoZone.

For my rocket I used a 5ft pvc pipe that I cut into 4 peices the main pipe is 2 ft the ones to the side off of the t are 1 ft each and then at the other end of the main pipe I have an elbow joint connected to a 5 inch pipe.

Haziq Mirza some water spills out when transferring the bottle onto the launcher. Once the bottle is on, the seal is air tight almost perfectly. The pipe extends passed the water level inside the bottle ensuring no excess water goes into the launcher as well. Over time and from the air pressure the plastic bottle may expand and compromise the seal.
