I appreciate your detailed explanation and ample examples. However, I am surprised that you call Devoicing “Deletion.” Because as you demonstrate, you whisper but clearly articulate each vowel. And it is your clear articulation of these whispered vowels that colors the consonants such as sh, ch and F. The only thing “deleted” is the pitch. In English, Deletion and Reduction mean something quite different. We both Reduce and Delete unstressed syllables. It is not slang, “slurring,” or even optional, but standard correct phonology, to pronounce unstressed vowels, not as spelled, but as the neutral vowels schwa or schwar (uh, er). And in rapid conversation, we may even Delete these neutral vowels. This comes quite naturally (NAT-cher-uh-LEE, NATCH-r-LEE) to English speakers. So we must actively fight this unconscious habit, in order to properly Devoice Japanese i/u without neutralizing or “slurring.” Why not call it Devoicing, or perhaps Whispering? I find it necessary to practice by whispering the entire word with clear articulation and timing. Then I add Voicing and pitch to the other vowels without changing my articulation or timing. Otherwise, I am too tempted to Reduce to schwa or Delete, losing syllables as in English.
