from a native english speaker)) there's no particular reason for this, it's just that some words are like that where a syllable is just silent... In french there's words like that too

When a vowel is followed by a double consonant, it usually makes a short vowel sound. You would split the word between the two consonants.... the first syllable would then be "ap" making it a closed syllable therefore a short vowel. "ple" is the second syllable. the 'e' is silent because every syllable has to have a vowel. Here is a great video on the syllables. Can someone help me? I’m trying to teach my kid vowels but…what I find is that these have MORE than two sounds. The letter “A” for example has four sounds. The name Abraham alone the letter “A” has THREE SOUNDS. A-bra-ham. There is also the “A” sound which is much like the letter “U” as in the word Underwear… like as in the word “America” Why are you only teaching TWO?
