As someone who’s been through a school shooting, I can relate to this terror. I wasn’t in the line of fire, since I was in a classroom, but I still experienced this sort of feeling. The immediate shock, which turns to fear. It’s something that no kid should have to go through.

I've seen school shootings in movies before, and plenty of violence, but this scene made me feel really uneasy in the cinema. I kind of started to wonder if someone was going to stroll in and shoot up the place. And I realised, for the first time, that if I was in a shooting I would probably be whimpering in the corner like everybody else, praying for my survival. It's fucking intense.

I would agree that it shouldn’t have been cut out except that they probably had to be extra careful considering flights are family friendly. Sadly, the opening scene was the single most compelling one in the entire movie. I checked out with the seemingly 37 minute ambulance drive to the hospital. Natalie Portman must have needed a paycheck. She’s better than this except for that horrendous Staten Island accent that got worse as the character matured. By the end of the movie , I was wondering if this was nothing more than a cautionary tale for Lady Gaga wannabe’s. Sorry, the flick just didn’t resonate with me one bit.

@@SpotlightClips School shootings are too sensitive a subject to be depicted unless absolutely necessary. I haven't seen the whole film so I can't say if it was artistically necessary to depict it in the first place, but several of the stylistic choices disturb me. The music he uses towards the end of the clip and the way he films and edits the scene show he's playing for tension, which is an obscene exploitation of an important subject. School shootings aren't suitable subject matter for thrilling an audience. If a scene has an inherent tension that's unavoidable, but he definitely tries to enhance it here, which is morally wrong. It also has an overall indulgent slickness. The way he moves the camera around the SWAT member after they get to the top of the staircase is totally unnecessary, only there to add "flair", which has no place such a sequence. Imagine a rape scene being filmed with the same attitude. For a less exploitative depiction of a school shooting, see Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" (2003). And for a more articulate response to such filmmakers, read Jacques Rivette's article "On Abjection".
@SpotlightClips5 жыл бұрын
@Leon You make some really good points. This film in particular is very complex in regards to its message, but it does have some powerful commentary on the state of our society, pop culture, and fame. I would encourage you to watch the entire film and see if it changes anything for you. I can understand how in this shortened context the clip could seem exploitive or indulgent.

"Why would anyone participate in a scene like this" Because they are actors and they get paid for acting in scenes... You don't want teen actors to be given opportunities to act (or to debut) in movies? wtf is wrong with you?!
@TheGrades903 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but the acting in this scene is way too weak for the subject matter. If you're going to depict something so horrible that unfortunately happens to so many, you need to act and direct it to be completely believable, in my opinion.
@madimeyer28623 жыл бұрын
I agree that it comes off as a bit unbelievable, but IMO it's a problem with the writing rather than the acting. It feels like they were trying a bit hard to be somewhat poetic and profound when writing the exchange between Cullen and Celeste but it ends up coming off awkward and choppy because it's just not how two American teenagers would interact, especially under such circumstances.
@marklombard936011 ай бұрын
It would be if it was her idea from the start
@Ghj232483 ай бұрын
Yes, after he shoots the teacher the scene transforms into a hideous Hollywood mockery of reality. We all know school shootings are violent and chaotic, but these writers have fooled themselves into thinking they can put a whimsical little exchange between the main character and the shooter, it’s so fucking disrespectful and contrived. Also I honestly do not think it is a good idea to depict school shootings in American media, especially when it’s just a plot point in a thriller. These people truly do not need anymore attention or inspiration.
@m-ox2txАй бұрын
@@Ghj23248What "whimsical little exchange" happened between Cullen and Celeste? If you find that whimsical, the issue is Disney to your odd interpretation. Also, art should be free to explore everything if handled maturely, which this movie does given it's the backbone to a lot of what happens. It's fully explored and not just used to shock and then forgotten about.
@SallyMankus13011 күн бұрын
@@Ghj23248 It effectively subverts expectations actually. The audience is originally led to believe that Celeste is likely a compassionate figure who might be capable of reasoning with him. The film also clearly offers a broader commentary on the turn of the century, which is defined by two pivotal events: Columbine and 9/11. This depiction is essential to the film. The same holds true for a film like Elephant. To me, it would only be disrespectful if it attempted to offer answers, rather than raising questions.
