Why so many "election deniers" lost in 2022

The belief that Donald Trump actually won the 2020 US election is widespread among his most devoted followers. That belief rests on claims of massive voter fraud in the 2020 election that have never been substantiated. And in the 2022 elections, many “election deniers” ran for state-level offices that have direct control over elections, promising to limit access to voting if they won. Of all Republican nominees for election-administration positions this year, over half openly claimed that Trump won in 2020.
But when the election came, the most high-profile of those “election denier” nominees, many of whom were favored to win, actually lost. And the story of why many of them lost is actually the story of thousands of ordinary citizens using the tools of democracy to protect democracy.

At the end of the video it says there are over 3,000 voting districts in the U.S. That seems to be right by what I'm seeing online now. But in the past I tried to find that and somehow got the very different number of over 180,000 - which is apparently super wrong. Does anyone know what I might have been seeing and confusing with voting districts? (maybe polling locations?) Thanks!

They usually give vague allegations that the longer a ballot is in a ballot box the more chance there is for generic "tampering" to happen. Which is obviously silly, because if someone could tamper with your votes there's absolutely nothing stopping them tampering with them in the several days after voting that it takes an election to be fully counted up anyway.

@@Epicurus341 Australia does national elections the best, even better than the United Kingdom. For starters, voting is compulsory, so the vote is not monopolised by more enthusiastic sections of society. Pre-polling is widely available 6 days a week, 2 weeks before election day. On the election day Saturday every suburb and town will have multiple voting locations, so the queuing wait times are always next to zero. Postal voting is readily available, with those pre-registered automatically receiving their ballot papers as soon as the election is announced for all elections. The most important aspect to the election process is that the federal elections are solely administered by the federal Australian Election Commission, so all proceedings are conducted to a consistent and uniform federal standard. The end result is that the Australian federal election to decide the members of parliament and Prime Minister is *never* in doubt. In STL County Missouri. They removed the electronic voting machines due to "accuracy" according to a republican poll worker. I was shocked so I informed her how sad it was, I explained that I was a poll worker who worked with those machines and was very impressed how notably secure the data is and how they had backup paper recordings of every single vote. I told her it's sad that like before we don't have a choice in how we vote in person now.

I wish they would do a video about access to the ballot in different states. Like I know that Georgia it is almost impossible for voters to get anything placed on the ballot, while in California it is much easier. I'd like to see a video that explores which states have made it very hard to access their ballot to place propositions for voters to vote on.

As long as I can remember Oregon has had mail in ballots. It’s not even optional it’s just the default and when we vote our options are we can either mail it in or drop it off at one of any number of ballot drop boxes in each of our counties. The only issue I have seen with our system was if in this past election and it was that the ballot drop box in my towns city hall parking lot got full so I had to come back an hour later. Mail in ballots are a great option if your goal is to drive voter participation, because it removes most of the barriers that prevent working people from participating.

Australia does national elections the best, even better than the United Kingdom. For starters, voting is compulsory, so the vote is not monopolised by more enthusiastic sections of society. Pre-polling is widely available 6 days a week, 2 weeks before election day. Every suburb and town will have at least one pre-poll station location. The election day is always on a Saturday, as having the election day during the week when everyone is working is truly idiotic. Australians are truly appalled with how Americans conduct their presidential elections. It appears as though they are run by 5 year olds, voting for the kindergarten class captain.

As a Brazilian, seeing this gives me multiple feelings. The USA system is archaic slow and chaotic to me. You guys should have an unified voting system, controlled by a strong and independent legal institution, like its here in Brazil. Here they tried to start these fraud acusations, but our eletronic voting system is so easily auditable, and so transparent, that this discourse has litteraly no force in congress. You can litteraly check all the votes of any session in the country by your cellphone. But I know that changing it now would actually give more firewood for the election deniers. But cmon, it should be better. In other hands, there are some things like the early voting that is very nice and enables more people to vote, and we dont have this here in Brazil. At the same time, we have only 20% of abstentions, while you guys have 34%, so its questionable how much this is helping. More should be done so more people go vote.

Echo chambers. If you live in areas that are predominantly one political party, it is _very_ west to convince yourself that a lot more people think the same as you than there really are. This is a lot easier in rural areas and smaller towns. That, and gerrymandering makes it incredibly easy to hide opposition. For example, there are surprisingly large swathes of Democratic voters in Texas. Yet due to "winner take all" representation and a lot more "land" looking Republican, it's very easy to believe that the entire state is deep red. It's not as easy to do so with Democratic areas due to high population centers tending towards blue. For example, looking at a map, only a small fraction of Illinois' area votes blue, while like 80% of the map is red. What people neglect is that 20% contains like 80% of the state's population, thus making it very easy to dismiss it as just "Chicago choosing for the majority".

Have to say I'm happy to live in Sweden. We can easily vote by mail several weeks up to the election day. And election day is always a holiday. No registration needed. We may have faulty politicians like everyone else, but I thank the old gods and the new for our election system.

I think this video was really well done. Very interesting information and stats. I think the number one issue going on is that one group says "anyone should be able to vote however they want, that's voting rights" and the other group says "you're just trying to cheat". What needs to happen is recognizing that what each group wants is a way to vote that is legitimate and fair and trustworthy but also convenient and not limiting. If we can figure out a way to do that we could potentially satisfy both groups.

I mean, it already is legitimate and fair, the incident rate of voter fraud is 0.0003 percent, and the state with the most fraudulent votes in 2020 was Arizona, with 198 cases, and there were under 500 cases nationwide, which is a number far too small to be consequential in any way. No government investigation or reputable third party has been able to find any evidence of voter fraud anywhere close to the scale required to affect the result of an election

The problem is that an investigation found no widespread "untrustworthiness" in the 2020 election, but the election deniers will not accept it. Trying to satisfy them is futile, because they are not playing by the rules of democracy, judicial oversight etc.
