Thats not really. I, myself, would be very happy to support my country, but in return, I would want more development to my city. Many times, cities and rich regions in a country are neglected as a money basket. Politicians don't usually give those regions the support they need to improve their life. My city, for example, has highways that small and no subway, a classroom has 40 students each and hospitals are way too small. Even though the countryside, that has a school that is too big, like with swimming pools. My school has to share a swimming pool with 3 other schools.

@@adamender9092 Is it though? How would they be forcing it? By the way Spain was made when they put a democracy, every Autonomy (Catalonia being one of them) has its own elections, congress and president, and has control over Education, Healthcare and most services, infrastructure and properties. Catalonia is in fact a special case because they have more power than other autonomies, having their own police force, being Catalan an official language (same status as Spanish) and having many other things from a special status. Where is the imposition coming from if they control everything but the money they collect from taxes, and ironically Catalonia receives back more money from Spain than the one it sends from tax collection? I see no way anyone can impose anything on Catalonia honestly. And the hundreds of free and peaceful protests that have been carried out (and had a massive impact mind you) would indicate me quite the opposite.

Not exactly true Paula. The infrastructure and factories were set up in Catalunya because the initiative and workforce was in the North. it was Franco who encouraged poorer parts of Spain to emigrate and work in Catalunya in the 50s and 60s where they were generally very welcome and have become so Catalan that many of them also want independence 50 years on. The poorer regions of Spain at the moment have free modern motorways, as they should, the fastest trains in Europe, good hospitals and good schools and this has been a successful distribution of wealth which the Catalans applauded and help to set up from 1979 onwards. The issue and crisis is not about this at all. It is based on a deep resentment of not being respected or listened to, despite contributing more that 20% of the GDP.

I'm from Barcelona and I'm SO fed up with the independence movement. The separatists have polarized the society and made a huge ammount of people feel like they are strangers in their own home. Half of the population here is afraid to speak out because of how irrational the separatists have become. In a nutshell: Catalonia earns more money than any other part of Spain, but Catalonia has to pay to the other parts of Spain to keep them functioning well. Catalonia obviously does not like this because they want to use their money for themselves and become independent as they already have their own language. Catalonia won’t be able to become independent, it just can’t happen, Without Catalonia, Spain will be critical.

Not only is the language completely different, but the food, traditions, holidays, culture in general is so different that you cannot compare it to Spain. One of my friends from Sweden was telling me how she went to Spain for Christmas and did traditional ''Spanish'' things like ''caga tió'' and ate ''sopa de galets'' and ''butifarra d'ou'', and i'm 100% sure that if you go outside of Catalonia, other spaniards will have 0 idea what she was talking about.

There are plenty of countries where multiculturalism is accepted, where different languages and lifestyles live together in harmony and tolerance. Yes, but we all speak English. Spain has a lot of regional languages that were supressed by the central government and what we call “Spanish” was forced down to the regions and a national identity was fabricated where it hadn’t been before. USA has came to be after nationalism became a thing, so our national identity was organic, but in Europe it’s a new thing relative to how long the cultures have existed. Pretty much every country over there has different regions with different languages and cultures, which is even crazier when you remember how much smaller each country is than the USA all together. The 50 states all chose to be together, while Catalonia was on the losing side of a civil war against Nationalists.

Most people I spoke with, wished for governmental compromise, and generally seemed nervous about the upcoming months. (I also understand the Barcelona is an international city, and may not totally represent the whole of Catalonia) I believe in Catalonia's need to self identify, but if you allow every region to claim independence, you'd have anarchy across all major countries of the world. At it's core, the vote and declaration of independence were against the constitution, and therefore illegal. It's not surprising the politicians are in trouble. I just hope the citizens get to retain a peaceful home, because it is a beautiful and wonderful culture.

I think that Catalonians' desire to stop contributing to less fortunate regions of Spain is selfish. I think that the Catalan belief that they should be separate because of their separate culture is problematic, to say the least. I think that Catalonians should focus on what they have in common with other workers and what can be achieved together. BUT, I an inclined to support Catalonian independence because of the abhorrent response of the Spanish government. People have a right to self-determination, and Spain should be embarrassed by its response to democracy in action. Spain is an abusive partner and Catalonia deserves better.

It’s important to note that nationalist separatist movements may be left wing, particularly those seeking an end to imperialist or colonial rule. Left wing nationalism, unlike right wing nationalism, does not seek to demonize people or apply any sort of essentialist characteristics based on origin or identity, and rejects ethnonationalism. A good example of this would be the Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland, whose most centrist elements were still explicitly socialist and anti-imperialist, whose opposition was not to British people, but the British government. While some fringe elements of the regional separatist movements in Spain may seek independence out of some sense of ethnonationalism or to avoid excessive taxation, this is far from the only motivation for independence, and the Basque, Catalan, and Galician nationalist movements all contain strong left wing elements. Some examples include political parties such as Euskal Herria Bildu in the Basque Country, Candidatura d’Unitat Popular in Catalonia, and Bloque Nacionalista Galego in Galicia. Rather than demonize Spanish people, language, and culture, or those of any other foreign background, these movements merely seek self-determination and freedom from centuries of systematic repression by the Spanish state.
@DralhaEureka
@DralhaEureka 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheKalihiMan, thank you for the insight. My statement lacked an appreciation of nuance. I should have considered the possibility that my understanding of what some of the motives are for independence may be derived from souces that were implicitly or explicitly pro-Spanish government. It certainly would benefit the Spanish government for outsiders to view the independence movement as ethnically motivated.
@TheKalihiMan
@TheKalihiMan 3 жыл бұрын
@@DralhaEureka It’s also possible this is just projection from right wing nationalists that assume all nationalist movements are motivated by the same type of xenophobia and ethnic supremacy that most often characterize theirs. A common talking point when discussing separatist movements in Spain seems to be an assumption that all Spanish speakers in independent regions will instantly be demonized or otherwise ostracized for speaking the language, ignoring that the overwhelming majority of people there are bilingual, or in some cases speak Spanish first. This paranoia seems to be a projection of the same policies of linguistic and cultural repression Spanish nationalism has imposed on the outer regions for generations.

None of my business since I do not live there, but a friend (originally from Barcelona, Spain) describes the movement as mostly populists, separatists and racially motivated individuals egged on by foreign interests (namely, Russia) in order to damage Spain and by extension, the EU. She describes the situation as similar to the foreign influences that led to Brexit and the political turmoil in the US with Trump. She wasn't completely dismissive of the movement (explaining in details some valid arguments for independence) but overall feels and describes the whole situation as "a knife being plunged into the heart of Spain, but the knife was given to an otherwise rational man who was then pushed forward. The man did not stop himself because he think that's what he wanted".

That is the way things go. As soon as the economy(or any other issue indeed) goes bad, people think their problems can be solved by getting apart, excluding others. That is what nationalism does. We saw it with fascism or nazism and we are seeing it with trump and the immigrants or the UK and the brexit. However, this case is more serius; families and friends are being torn apart.

danicano997 the matter here is that our economy is great, spain is very culturaly diferent, and while in catalonia everyone has a working spirit, in many places in spain don’t want to work (which is different from not beeing able to). Add the fact that catalonia is one of the most expensive places in europe with the worst infrastructures, add all the insults from the other spanishs and you have an independence movement.
@danicano997
@danicano997 7 жыл бұрын
Albert Gassull I am sure you know that insults go both ways and I get the feeling the responsibleS for that are the the mass media and the hostile environment it creates. Apart from that, speaking of cultural differences (the ones from the north work harder than the ones from the south, for example) in geographical terms is sociologically outdated. Nowadays two people from different big cities, such as Barcelona and Madrid, have more in common than someone from a small town in Gerona and someone from Barcelona. Madrid and Catalonia's wealth compared to other parts of Spain are explained by very different reasons: being the capital in Madrid's case or, in Catalonia's case, having a great geographical location and historical help from Central governments to calm the independence movement of the bourgeoisie. There is a lot of literature about it. I invite you to read it.
@Ed-wt4gc

@Albert Gassull, sorry but that's not true and sounds like supremacist nonsense. Everyone not blinded by propaganda knows separatism is a social engeneering plot by the elites that controls all facets of society (mastereminded by 1990's Jordi Pujol's Programa 2000) to rule what they believe their "feud" and escape being judged for their corruption now that in Spain politicians of all signs are being incercerated. Things got out of control in 2011 when people besieged the Catalan parliament and separatist politicians got scared, accelerated the process and dressed everybody with the separatist flag hidding all problems under the carpet... sadly part of the population got duped with the tale of "Spain steals from us" (when it's part of catalans politicians who fraud and missapropiate public funds) "we're better, we're different, we're opressed, they hate us"... the same old worn-out victimist nationalist ploy... a plot of deception, animosity, lies and greed.

Supremacism? It's numbers and facts... And on the other hand, why are you now making reference to CiU? I have never said I support them, and I think the whole party should be removed from the earth. On the other hand, I do completely support and trust ERC, as it has been a political party for 86 years, and has never had a corruption case. Answering to the other things, I do understand that from the rest of the world they tell you that we are lobotomized cows that do what their master wants; but I'm not like that, Spain doesn't steal from Catalonia... it's something natural that the richest regions pay more than the poorest, but there are some facts to value here: 1. In the other countries, the regions that pay the highest taxes, also get the better infrastructures, services, etc... and this is NOT happening here, this is a problem. 2. There is a great difference between the way of thinking in the rest of Spain (excluding Vascs) and in Catalonia, and I don't mean to defend Tv3, but it seems like all the Spanish media and political parties have been feeding themselves by promoting hate towards Catalonia, and it's something that makes them win votes and money. That makes us angry. 3. I have never said it's all a fact o money, hang the world. This is about democracy, and about the people, not about politicians, and as much as you are concerned about the corruption and the hypocrisy of CiU or PdeCat or whatever, they at least are acting as If they were democrats, the constitutional parties don't even bother, they are cynics. I hope you don't fall asleep while reading all this...
@danicano997
@danicano997 7 жыл бұрын
I really like this propagandistic discourse of "we only want to vote, it is a matter of democracy." That is a fallacy that shows the complete lack of knowledge the population has about democracy, an absolute failure of the educational system. Voting is just a small part, actually is the last (but not least) one: it is of no use if the the previous steps are corrupted. This is the case in Catalonia. Given the length of your previous comment allow me to expand on this: 1. There are some things that cannot be voted. You cannot vote to drop a bomb in Madrid of course; but also, a region cannot vote its independence. Why? The unity of the State is a value that stands above the right of the people to decide their own issues. This would require much more explanation, but this is basically the argument the international law uses to forbid it. For instance consider how difficult would be, in a world with 500 country, to sign a treaty to stop terrorism, climate change or tax fraud. 2. If the will of the people is manipulated through propaganda, there is no freedom to choose. I don't how many people have actually an informed opinion, but I'm sure it doesn't get to the 10%( It would require a high degree of knowledge in law, economics and politics) 3. Decisions must be taken by those directly affected. This is a basic principle of democracy. If the wealthy decide by themselves the taxes, it is not democratic just because there is a referendum amonst them. If a region decides a matter that affects the whole State it is not democratic. P.D: Catalonians an Basques don't have a different mindset. That's is not a fact, that is just ignorance and if you want to say something like that at least give some explanation.
