Right, so if I'm with my parents walking down a sidewalk, and a truck comes and kills both my parents while I'm standing helplessly watching, does that mean that suddenly everyone is going to take me seriously when I start calling for all cars to be banned? Edit: For you darlings out there who were so blindly focused on my comparison of guns to cars that you missed the entire point of my comment, let me elaborate for you. I was merely pointing out that we should not allow emotions to overwhelm our ability to think rationally. I was trying to say that if someone had a very traumatic experience with anything, a car for instance, it wouldn't be unexpected for them to suggest radical policies with reference to cars, no matter how absurd the suggested policies were.

Not just attack the kid, but makes up lies about him to attack him.
@bothi004 жыл бұрын
@@cn2673 Okay ya fair I do concede the CNN bit, but what of Vox? Didn't see them "attacking" the kid. Also I feel that's a slightly false equivalency. The smirking kid thing was in the context of a clash between ideologies in an open environment with confrontational behaviour on both sides. While the kid certainly didn't deserve the person abuse for what he did, I don't see the issue with criticising him. With Hogg, this was a kid who had survived a mass shooting, and was simply campaigning for some kind of change to stop these kinds of massacres from happening, or at least making them way less frequent as best as possible. And despite that, he was slandered, abused and threatened by the media and their followers.

@@cn2673 Okay, fair but I have to ask, what was the relevance of any of this?? Siara Hughes people taking a hard stance one or the other side about anything, especially gun control are quite often ignoring the nuances. I think striking a balance is important. I don't want to see all guns taken away (small arms are pretty good for protecting yourself) but simultaneously something must be done when you have the worst stats for gun related violence per capita in the developed world. You don't really hear about mass shootings anywhere in but in the U.S. and they happen frighteningly often here. I think gun control in the sense of regulating who exactly gets guns (i.e. those who do not have mental disorder like schizophrenia) and what is very difficult to get even if you're healthy (I think anything larger than a hunting rifle should be very heavily regulated).

I don't engage in policy issue discussions with children. For the exact same reason we as a society do not allow them to vote. We do not consider their mental, emotional, and psychological development adequate to vote. I'm not even remotely interested in what they think. Now, if I were their parent, I'd listen to them out of "respect" and to nurture their development. However, when craven ideologues exploit these children and put them on stage "demanding" anything, and in the process demonizing and scapegoating millions of citizens, well, I'm afraid the swift and explicit sanctioning by the adults in the room will ensue. As it should. The disgrace in all of this is actually the children's parents. For they are not serving them by allowing what has transpired. The children were exploited, period.

I find fascinating that most criticism targets his age, not what he may have actually said, to showcase that he apparently doesn’t know much about gun control. Classic ad hominem arguments, dismissing what he has to say based on who he is instead of what he said, and getting lost in the inane debate of wether or not he should be listened to. I mean, if he’s so young/inexperienced/alien/an actor, I’m sure his arguments would be easy to disprove, no? I‘m aware of how tough it is to get facts due to NRA blocking studies and how murky it can get, but there are a few legitimate studies out there. Seems to me that either you discredit someone‘s arguments with facts, or... well, if you can’t, maybe consider either research or adding nuance on your viewpoint. The smear campaign seems more like desperate attempts to discredit someone because they cannot actually debate the issue itself. In the words of the great Donald Trump... „sad“.
@coolplyx56 жыл бұрын
He literally swears and makes obscene statements in his interviews, and completely exaggerates most of his comments. Moreover, news outlets such as CNN and Vox express David's opinions, as they are young and have a shield of immunity having just survived a school shooting. This leads to false ideas and facts being spread due to the exploitation of these kids. His main view on gun control is fine, but when he backs it up with rude statements, he should be criticised on all fronts.
6 жыл бұрын
Theres thousands of hours of video of people debunking this kids bullshit and people only bring up the age because the kids do. They say theyre old enough to know all of this or thatbut when someone comes at them with facts and statistics they say "well im just a kid" "why are you coming at a kid like this" and there arent ANY stats being blocked by the NRA stop that nonsense. They dont need to anyway, statistics are on the side of the gun owners

@tessy40186 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I’m not familiar with his swearing/obscene comments. That should absolutely be criticized if true. But that does not mean that his points on gun control should face the same criticism-the way someone says something doesn’t necessarily discredit the content of what they are saying. That’s what I find distressing-the shutting down of his comments on gun control based on the way he said them is irrational. Now, in terms of the shield of immunity he may have as a victim, regardless if justified, should not be applicable to the facts that he may present, I 100% agree with that. As stated before, I would like to see the rebuttal of his arguments based on their content, his character has little to do with it, and should be criticized seperately. I would actually understand the immunization of being a victim within a school shooting if applied to criticism on his character-I think we can all understand Hogg went through traumatic events and should benefit from more understanding and compassion than a non-victim when criticizing his approach. But I also disagree with using this immunity as an excuse to not think critically and fact check his arguments on gun control. So essentially-he should be criticized for his way of approaching this issue but I think we can all agree that we should keep in mind that Hogg went through trauma-adult or not. However, this should not mean that if his arguments are factually incorrect, they shouldn’t be highlighted as such, with explanations of course. I won’t defend the media outlets that aren’t doing so. I would point out that if the conservative media adopted that strategy from the beginning, they wouldn’t be seen as the type of people who would try to smear a victim of a school shooting. Positioning yourself as understanding but arguing his points factually instead; hence removing yourself from being confronted to this « immunity », would have been much smarter. You may argue that the townhall debate was an attempt at doing so, but the media coverage of it fell right into the trap of questioning these kids’ validity and hence hit the wall of immunity. Factually disproving them and avoiding a smear campaign at all cost would actually have positioned them in a much stronger place against gun control.

They keep saying he is too immature and not old enough or something, but the very same people mentally, are younger and more immature than him. I can't stand people who attack personal things like age and seem to take no regard for stuff like mass shootings or whatever. And why are they so against it? A little gun control, like looking at people's backgrounds thoroughly or limiting the types available, surely wouldn't be that devastating? I haven't done much research and I'm not sure exactly what gun control means for them, but I dunno.
@mjt15176 жыл бұрын
Did you know that more mass shootings happen with handguns than with rifles? So what types of weapons are you willing to limit? And are you sure it would really prevent anything?
@Aaa-ho3sq6 жыл бұрын
Like I said I haven't done much research, I'm just suggesting things they do over here in Australia. There was a horrible massacre over here and the guy used an ar-15 and stuff, so they've limited what guns are available. They also do stuff like requiring a reason for buying a gun, they had a buy back program where most Australians gave back their guns etc. I feel that making it a little harder just to get a gun would be good, so crazy people or suicidal people can't just enter a store and buy it so easily. But like I've said numerous times, I haven't done much research, this is for America to decide, but I feel they could at least do something because at the moment gun homicides and suicides are a problem.
@Aaa-ho3sq6 жыл бұрын
Mauris, unsure why you are arguing against things I haven't said. I never said it would defintely work for america, I'm saying what has worked for many other nations and that perhaps America could at least try to do something about it. I never said it wasn't madatory, I'm pointing out that many people listened and handed in the guns. I wasn't talking about background checks, I'm talking about making it harder to simply find a gun, and also requiring a reason and the papers for that. If it was harder just to impulsively go to the nearest store and quickly buy a gun, I'm pretty sure that could help. Maybe making it harder to get and maintain guns or a gun license would also help. If you ask me, it is a problem when America has a drastically higher rate of gun violence. It has also been increasing since around 2010 or something I'm pretty sure, so something needs to be done. Again, I'm not a seer so I'm not sure exactly what would greatly benefit the US, but I think something has to be done so America can save at least a few lives.
@Aaa-ho3sq6 жыл бұрын
Mauris that wasn't a counter argument because I wasn't saying it wasn't mandatory. I was pointing out that people gave it back and many didn't try to secretly keep it which would prevent people not planning to murder would not impulsively grab their gun. Over here it is harder to buy a gun and maintain it. You have to have reasons and it isn't in any old store for impulsive killers to buy it. I never said it will definitely work for America, I'm just explaining how it has worked for many other countries. Again, I still feel it is a problem and more could be done, since at the moment, the US has a much much higher rate of gun violence and who knows whether that 'little rise' will actually be an ever increasing one. I say you guys should stop it know. I'm not saying that ar-15s cause a large majority of gun homicides, I just think it is unnecessary, I'm not sure why someone would need it for hnting or anything. Obviously I think drugs and stuff are an enormous problem that destroy and take lives, it is a very important issue. I never said to ignore everything else. And again, there is a much higher gun violence rate in the US, so it could potentially save a lot of lives, also, from what I've seen on multiple sources, opioids don't cause twice as many deaths as people with guns (but again, that doesn't mean this opioid epidemic isn't bad). And I don't see a problem with trying to reduce gun violence, even if it only saves a bit .
