@@dhinton1 The real irony is that the line was uttered by someone who would go on to break nearly every one of her own rules. She killed Tuvix, kidnapped a borg drone and seperated her from the collective against her will, as well as locked a scared young ensign in a cargo bay and almost let some alien creatures suck him dry because he wouldnt betray his captain to her. And thats just off the top of my head. If Tuvok did anything wrong here, then surely he learned from the best. Janeway is still the worst captain ever in starfleet.

@@shindoushuichi0287 Sure, no doubt. Im not claiming any of them are perfect. Even Picard, who is probably the most morally grounded of all them has stepped in it now and again. But the difference between Janeway and all the others comes down to accountability. Janeway has none. Take the sort of self reflection, introspection, and even self condemnation we see from Captain Sisko here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gV68qn9tjZl2jdk Now find me something even remotely close to that from Janeway. There isnt anything, because Janeways morality has always just been whatever worked for her at the time. It is she that is able to justify almost anything she does to herself, which is why I find it ironic that shes lecturing Tuvok about it here. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

OptimusWombat, Her response to being called out, was foretold in the scene in Engineering, after initiating the trajector sequence had failed. Torres told Seska that trying to hide the incident (or outright sweep it under the rug) was not the course she felt compelled to take, instead, owning up to what had been done. Needless to say, Seska was incredulous that Torres would, without reservation, admit her culpability to Janeway. In a relatively brief period, she had gone from openly condemning the decision to destroy the Array and Janeway's fitness (as Seska did, when finally unmasked), to fully apprehending the responsibilities in undertaking the role of a senior officer, properly characterized as holding one of the handful of position that were absolutely essential to the operation of the ship.

Tuvok is over 100 years old. He served for three years under Sulu on the Excelsior, spent decades as an archery teacher on Vulcan, lived in seclusion for six years, fathered four children, had another run as an officer, and spent 16 years as an instructor at Starfleet Academy. If he were serving under me on my ship I think it would feel like being in command of my dad. Nominally his superior, but it sure wouldn't feel like it. One of the few times the show made use of its premise… Janeway needs everyone working for the team as a whole, to the point she can’t put someone in the brig. Fast forward several years and she’s more comfortable putting people in the brig. Which might be the right thing to do, but in this clip the fact she feels she can’t… means she’s having to compromise in the Delta Quadrant. Somehow that makes the underlying tension of the shows premise more palpable.

Voyager needed more of this in general. It could have been the ST version of Battlestar Galactica. They chose to make the episodes stand alone when the concept needed serialized storytelling. It had a great cast but it focused too much on too few of them. Chakotay and Harry Kim could have been break out characters but they hardly did anything with them. Half the crew were federation traitors, but it was barely mentioned after the first episode. They should have had to deal with long term damages, forcing them to violate federation ethics to get repairs. The most interesting episode to me was early on when they discovered a psychopath who murdered someone and had to decide if they were going to jail, him, Marion him, or kill him.
@mitchellmelkin4078
@mitchellmelkin4078 2 жыл бұрын
@@sleepinggorilla, I will take issue with just one point you made above. First, by no means did the surviving complement of the Val Jean, come anywhere close to comprising half of the reconstituted crew of Voyager. While I don't believe any specifics were ever mentioned in that regard, it seems very dubious that they numbered any more than a couple of dozen, out of a combined total of roughly 150. Second, I'm not certain that the Maquis were officially designated as "traitors" by the Federation or Starfleet. It goes without saying that their actions against the Cardassians were strenuously sought to be neutralized (although, more critically the case in DS9, it's a fact that Voyager's mission was in support of that same resolute understanding). I would venture that, their exact status, notwithstanding, Voyager being indefinitely removed from the quadrant where that issue had any real impact, made this distinction pretty much a moot point. Having said that, it's also true that the showrunners fully intended such a divisiveness to be a primary plot point, for at least the first year. Regardless of how that might have played out, as you lament wasn't the result, it wasn't the showrunners who changed their minds about pursuing it. That change was mandated by the suits at the network, supposedly because they felt the centerpiece of their brand spanking new broadcast vehicle, shouldn't be distinguished by discord among the crew, but instead, a quick and relatively seamless integration, as there would be enough dangers in the DQ to be concerned about and overcome. So, the producers were given no choice in the matter.

The results of logic are only as good as the premises used as its foundation. If the premises used are faulty, so will be the result of the logic based on them. In this case, Tuvok assumed (a premise) that the Janeway meant that the goal of getting the crew home was paramount above all else, limited only by her own reluctance to break Starfleet rules. That faulty premise is what lead to this situation.

Precisely. People, even those in Star Trek, often forget that logic is a tool for reasoning. But first there is something that needs to be reasoned about. Logic isn't good or bad, it's the choices based on it, exactly as Tuvok says at the end here. Another example of this: If you want to sterilize an entire planet of all life, it's logical to sanction the use of the strongest weapons in your arsenal. If you value life above all else, it's logical to ban the use of the strongest weapons in your arsenal. Logic is not in error in either case. That's its power... and its flaw.

" Voyager has no character development" I direct you to this scene. Janeway was deeply hurt by the revelation and later relied more on group council than solely tuvok. It was partially this incident that closed her off later in the show because she was attracted to chakotay and it closed off any avenue of personal venting. For fear of conflict of interest. A fact she learned even after Mark had moved on she couldn't afford the same luxuary. Picard chose to be alone and could date if he wanted, but Janeway? She'd become the spinster ms havasham she read so much about. Tuvok was her ship councilor and he undermined her trust. When seven came aboard she became her surrogate child and a way of expressing herself for the family she never had but expressed in her dogs, her holo novels and her crew. Now she was adopting a fully grown woman. An abused Foster child that grew up thinking everyone around her wants something from her. Janeway in a fashion does she wants a daughter. It is so painful to watch picard and sering seven become well a drug addled Corey feldman type wearing Clint Eastwood shades. Drinking and screwing and killing the pain away. Perhaps she was best off in the collective

joe grimes, You make some excellent points, but I definitely don't agree with your contention that what Tuvok did, had any lasting imprint on the solidity and trust that Janeway found in his support and counsel. She says this herself many times over the remaining near to 7 years of the journey. My interpretation of this remonstration of him, that she felt was absolutely necessary, was that Tuvok's assurance of never again taking such a tack, was all that Janeway needed to hear, and that renewed understanding between them went into effect immediately. Once she made clear that he was to make no similar rationalization going forward, I think that she implicitly accepted that a dispute of the same nature wouldn't ever recur, such was the outcome of their having known each other as long as they did.

joe grimes, I neglected to append to my last comment, above, that Seven wasn't the first connection of the type you describe, that Janeway experienced. Kes was fully as much a movingly felt daughter (Mulgrew and Lien even having the same sort of connection IRL, at the time). If Lien's behavior hadn't gone so far beyond the guardrails that TPTB put in place (including her absolute refusal to accept any help that was proffered), I've little doubt that their relationship would have continued to grow organically, in that same way, Seven's introduction, notwithstanding.

I think every Star Trek up to and including Enterprise was good and had its moments. Each carried that essential Trek DNA. It really was a franchise that defied the norm of other sci-fi shows, it was fantastical yes, but it wasn't just a dumb action show, it had heart, and it grappled with ethics and philosophy in deep and personal ways. It was an examination of the human spirit, and asked us to raise up and be better. Better to each other. Better to the planet. Better to all living things. It wasn't the cynical and depressing thing the present Star Trek shows are. And yeah, not every episode was good, and some were actually quite bad (see the Voyager episode "Threshold"), but I'll take a few stinkers, because when it was great, it was really great.

Mulgrew, and her impeccable performance as Captain Janeway, MUST be in Star Trek Picard at some point. Personally, Janeway is my second fav, next to Picard of course, and I always said that Picard was the one you wanted at the Diplomat's conference, but Janeway was the one you wanted at the head of the fleet when someone's ass needed kicking.. The sheer steel, combined with the vulnerability that Mulgrew brought to the role was fantastic television, and truly shows the range Kate Mulgrew has as an actress.
@mitchellmelkin4078

Joao Gomes, My God, no!!! It's bad enough that Mulgrew chose to let herself be involved in the abomination of Kurtzman Trek (really non-Trek) by opting into the kids' show, as a voice artist. I can only devoutly desire that she not be submerged in that cesspool any deeper (along with any other ST featured actors who've yet to succumb to the blandishments that might be set out for them, as lures). Just on its face, why should Janeway be involved in any drama, with a character who's been literally transformed into the exact same type of simulacrum, that all of the CBS productions are, as being in any way, representative of the actual ethos of ST?

Janeway had more heart than all the other Star Fleet Captians. She suffered for her crew and watched over them and protected them like a mother watches over her young. She was one of my favorite Star Fleet Captians of all the shows. She was also a lion fighting for her cubs/crew whenever they faced an enemy. She was a true badass, I often fined myself asking this question was she better than, kirk, Picard or even Sisko. One thing is for certain Star Trek Voyager had more heart and suffering of its crew than any of the Star Trek shows. Captian Janeway was truly a special woman and in the end she got them home. What an absolutely incredible Captians she was, she took 7 of 9 in like a daughter, a female human born. She made everyone around her a better person. Belona, Tuvok, Kim, Chicotay, Paris and the rest of her crew, what was an exceptional woman.

Boy, you could so hear the pain in her voice when she found out that Tuvok, the person she trust and relies on the most, had done something that he thought was up to him to do since she could not. What can one say other than this being a gut punch to Janeway (especially, Tuvok's involvement, needless to say). Mulgrew captured the utter incredulity that Janeway would have experienced, even in giving a thought to Tuvok being complicit. It's so apparent how she utterly sold how tenuously the captain was struggling to rein in her emotions, as she had to. It's a compellingly moving scene, however many times one sees it.

@@matthewjones2095 Janeway is never written like a Mary Sue. She had continuous conflict with Seven and Chakotay. She is portrayed as flawed even in this episode. Shes says she DEPENDS on the relationship with Tuvok, in "Night" she is shown to have an excessively guilty conscience. In Eqinox shes shown as overly aggressive in stopping Ransom, just like Sisko against Edington, or Picard against the Borg. As a scientist she holds the best council on most solutions but she like every Captain depends on Harry Kim's flawed equations in Timeless, has to let go of her scientific reasoning to save Kes, and lost the ship to the Kazon.
