Why you should use Tor Browser instead of a VPN: 1. VPNs are not designed for privacy or anonymity, and is not private or anonymous; 2. VPN software are often proprietary (closed source) on both client side and server side, so we cannot trust their no-logs policy, and VPN companies could choose to spy on your computers if they want to. Tor, on the other hand, is free/libre and open source software (FLOSS), so everyone can verify whether it is tracking you or not if they want. FLOSS also get auditted and patched by a lot of experts from all over the world, many more than a VPN company can ever hope to hire; 3. Tor 3-hop design is to make sure that no single points could know both where you are from and what websites you are visiting; 4. A VPN works by encrypting your traffics, sending it to a VPN server, decrypting it on the server, and sending the traffics to the website which you are visiting. So a VPN could literally read all your usernames, passwords, emails and credit cards info in plain text, unless your connections are encrypted with SSL/TLS; 5. Tor is, unlike a VPN, decentralized, so there are no trust issues here; 6. Using a VPN is like shifting your trust from your ISP to your VPN provider; 7. VPNs do not and cannot fix Tor's vulnerabilities; 8. IP is not the only thing someone needs in order to be able to track you; 9. Tor Browser makes everyone's fingerprints look similar, making it hard to track users; 10. VPN users' browsers can still leak their IP address through WebRTC leaks; 11. The government can usually just ask the VPN companies for user data if they want to.
