@Aqvavitae Well, the Speyburn 15 might just run past it with that 3 % extra ABV but it has also gone above 60 € in Germany. Tullibardine 15 is still at 50 €. Even below on offer. It also stands out with that cinnamon note. Would love to see it in one of the next vPubs :)

Great show Roy. The entire show summarised with ....."the only thing permanent is the shelf" . So true. As for the Kilchoman, I'd go for the Loch Gorm, you can stand a spoon up in it haha. The Orchard House ..... Noooooo!! If you're going to replace for a funky industrial, change the Loch Lomond where I'd go for the Benromach CS, although I do love the Glen Garioch too. As for the Glen Dronach, I'd replace it with the Tamdu 15 ( although the Glenturrent is spectacular too !). Tough choices made. Slainte.
@Aqvavitae

Some of the choices were really hard Hamo - and it wasn't because I fell out with them or don't like them any more, it;s purely based on mood and the feelings and preferences of right now. tough choices had to be made. Thanks for the nice comments and for participating although that Tamdhu is a bit pricey - I did like it though.

Hi Roy, as a newish drinker, who always liked whisky but really started deep diving about a year back, my permashelf bottles right now are: Glencadam 10, Arran 10, Bunnahabhain 12, Ardbeg 10, PC10, Royal Brackla 12, KIlkerran 12, Benromach 10 or 15 (still debating this one, mainly due to price), TB/BSW, Maclean’s Nose. I would squeeze in Aultmore 12 (replacing Arran 10) if it was easier to find. I will definitely keep track of how the permashelf evolves for me.

Ledaig 10 4. Old Pulteney 15 5. Amrut Fusion (to be replaced by Springbank if you actually see a bottle in a store) 6. Tamdhu 12 7. Bushmills 12 8. Glenlivet Carribean Cask (yeah, not fancy, but great on those super hot summer days!) 9. Ardbeg Uigaedail (tough choice between this and Kilchoman Senaig, but I had to pick my first peat love) 10. I've not tried a wide enough range to have 10 spots on a permashelf, but I do have three... * Bunnahabhain 12 - a very reliable (for me) base pour, consistently good, nicely salty and refreshing with just the barest of peat. * Plantation Xaymaca - (for lighter and fruitier flavours, I prefer rum over scotch and Xaymaca is giving me the sense of what I want rum to be - sweet, tropical, fruity, rich). * Ledaig 10 - a peatier spot. This used to be Talisker 10, but the latest Talisker release has been a wee bit mid... This one could be replaced by smth else.

@Hargiwald
@Hargiwald 7 ай бұрын
It's probably because I only have around 20 whisky bottles in total in my bar cabinet, but I actually struggled to find ten, where many seemed to get it down to ten. It's probably also in part because I've chased IB:s since I got back into whisky, and many of my old favourite OB:s aren't what they used to be 10-15 years ago. But anyway, here's my best shot: - Kilkerran 12 (it's usually available here in Sweden, even if not always) - Edradour Caledonia - Ardbeg 10 (there's something to be said for a soft, good natured spirit in one hell of a rock 'n' roll peat overcoat. This would be my vote, since I can't seem to fall in love with the PC10) - AnCnoc 18 - Smögen 100 proof (for the sake of a little patriotism, and because Islay style served very craft, with the volume turned to 11) - Ardnamurchan (cask strenght if I can find it, otherwise a regular AD) Then it got a bit harder. - I lack something fresh, crisp and ex-bourbon. I suspect I'd prefer Arran 10 if it was only available here, but for now I'll stick to Glencadam 15. - Well, if I just keep my eyes open I can usually find a new bottle before I run out, because my whisky bottles usually last a few years even when I love them. Springbank 12 CS. - I struggle now, and I'm going to almost repeat myself, just to add a treat yourself-bottle: AnCnoc 24. That's just 9. I'll have to run out and buy more whisky. Maybe the Craigellachie 13, the Deanston 12 or the Bunnahabhain 12 or the Kilchoman Sanaig could get a spot on that shelf? All whiskys I want to try.
@Aqvavitae
@Aqvavitae 7 ай бұрын
Amazing to witness you struggle with it all and fun to see you not deny yourself some good stuff! The AnCnoc 24 is a treat indeed when we can get it at reasonable prices! Great stuff!
@Hargiwald
@Hargiwald 6 ай бұрын
@@Aqvavitae Well my philosophy is that if I don't buy way more bottles than I need, I will have more money over to spend on the bottles I do buy. But obviously it makes exercises like these harder. But, I see now the AnCnoc 24 seems to have gone up in price way more abroad than it has here in Sweden, I should probably buy another one while I still can afford it. Because of the price models used bottles can sometimes be cheaper at the government owned liquor stores here, in case of quick price hikes or premiumization. Same goes for the Springbanks, when they are available.

Great content, Roy. Just watched on the replay. If I have a permashelf, it is a very small one, indeed. I explore too many indie bottlers and special releases to have a large 10 bottles "wide" permashelf, so mine is as follows: Craigellachie 13 Kilkerran 12 (easy to find in Denmark and very reasonably priced) That's it... these 2 form my permashelf. I always have a (at least one) Loch Lomond bottle open, but it varies over time and also includes special bottlings. Previously it was the core range 12 yo, currently it's the The Open Special Edition from 2020 "Be there in the spirit" (I know that you know that one very, very well!) and your Aqvavitae Barflies bottling from 2022, but both getting dangerously near the bottom of the bottles. Fortunately I have a backup bottle of the "Be there in the spirit" in my stash. Cheers buddy! 🥃

Well I still have ton of closed bottles and I'd like to take this year to open and try as many as I can to get more bearings and to give those a chance to shine. All good stuff Roy! I wish I could find Glencadam or Kilkerran here in the States. I’ve heard so much praise for these distilleries. I need to replace my Craigellachie 13. Fantastic dram! I just finished my Arran 18 and I wish I hadn’t. It might be a while before I find a replacement. Anything from Kilchoman is a winner. I don’t think there’s a bad bottle out there. Simplest way to understand how alcohol impacts you is to check your heart rate after drinking. Heart rate will shoot up for about 4 hours after drinking and if you drink all the way until sleep time, your heart won’t get any rest while you are asleep, pretty much impacting all your internal organs. This is why everyone should cut back on frequency/amount of alcohol consumption.

@@Aqvavitae Yes, definitely recommend trying a smart watch that measures your heart rate. Alcohol’s negative impact to heart and vein applies to all humans and animals, not just for some. You might think you are getting a good sleep but your internal organs are not. Also, if you consume alcohol on consecutive days then the negative impact builds on top each day and it takes just as many days to get it to normalize. I love your channel and love whisky but just wanted everyone to be aware that just because your blood work comes back clean does not mean alcohol isn’t hurting your body.

Permashelf is a bit easier for me since I don't like peat, it removes a whole range of what I know is good stuff, but that just doesn't suit my tastes. That gives me a smaller universe to work in, but even so, there are still difficult decisions. In that respect, I pity those of you with a more diverse palate who have too much to decide on. I also envy you because I also have had a bit of FOMO with peated expressions, so I kept trying them. Even Arnamurchan, I recognized its quality, but I struggled to get through it because of the peat aspects. Anyway, I've given up the struggle for now, I want to enjoy my drams, not force myself to like it. Maybe someday it will strike a chord with me. I vote we make Permashelf be 14, so we can avoid the stress of difficult decisions. But I know that's a cop out that will eventually lead to a 30 bottle shelf.😉

I'm pretty much in the situation you highlighted in the opening bits - new to whiskey, tried the Johnnie Walkers, Glenfiddichs, Jameson, Talisker etc. with the wide distribution, and now looking to expand horizons but being a bit overwhelmed by the sea of 10- & 12-year olds slightly off the beaten path. KZbin channels like this have been super helpful to help me get through the choice paralysis, and I've started to see a lot of overlap in the recommendations - I even just recently started to dig through the list I made on these recommendations by picking up a Ledaig 10 (which I was surprised to find I love). Enough to want to pick up the 18 at some point so already a win there. The list goes on!

Another aspect of whisky's plateau-ing popularity - other than the already mentioned expensiveness - could be that, well, fundamentally it is an unhealthy thing... As health concerns swing higher, whiskeys have to swing lower.
@Aqvavitae
@Aqvavitae 7 ай бұрын
Spot on.🎯 No alcohol or low alcohol alternatives are common, and many younger folks just don't want to drink. It all has an effect, but the plateauing we're seeing right now is fully down to high prices for certain categories and an over-accumulation during the pandemic years. I'm fairly sure of that. The whiskies in tonight's vPub will still be selling.

I wrote that list off the top of my head & in that order, but reckon it's a fair attempt at answering the question. The first 2/3rds is a fairly broad answer to "What is Scotch?", and the rest addresses "What other kinds of whisk(e)y are there?". Most "world whisky" I enjoy is stuff that operates on its own terms rather than trying to copy Scotch. Bain's is made in South Africa & it's the kind of whisky you take to a braai. Braai is an Afrikaans word that means something like a barbecue, but with more people & less rain! Whiskies to sip & contemplate on cold winter evenings are fairly well represented in my list. Bain's is more of an easy access summer pour for me, but well put together & very fairly priced.

Good vPub Roy. I don't really have a Permashelf as I am still on my first bottle for many of my whiskies. One that I have repurchased a few times is WT101. I've finished my current bottle but have plans to repurchase this. Another one that I will definitely repurchase when I finish the current bottle is Kilchoman Sanaig. I considered repurchasing PC10 when I finished my bottle, but the price has gone up considerably. While it is a good whisky, for me it isn't worth the current price. I think that will be the case with quite a few of my whiskies. They were good for the price I purchased them at but have since gone up considerably in price, largely due to hype. The whisky isn't worth the current price compared to what else is available. Cheers!

If it's good value and a worthy bottle for people to talk about - that's consensus. When it's too expensive and no longer worth the purchase, that can be considered hype. We back off. Loads of options, spot on. Your permashelf may currently stand at one or two bottles, but with time and repeated moments, it'll likely build. Good luck!

Great List Roy! It is really hard to narrow down to a 10 bottle shelf. I like the 2024 list but have a couple positions that I'd swap. Arran 10 (enjoy it a little more than Deanston, but both are great) Glencadam 10 Benromach Cask Strength or 15 (love Ledaig, but prefer the 18 or the Rioja) Port Charlotte 10 Clynelish 14 or Compass Box Orchard House (prefer these fruity pours to Inchmurin) Craigellachie 13 Armagnac (love the 13 too) Speyburn 15 (Tamdhu 15 was close) - TB/BSW in unavailable to me Glen Garioch 12 Adrnamurchan Cask Strength Kilkerran 12 (actually fairly available) - love Kilchoman, but prefer Loch Gorm to Sanaig and then too premium for the permashelf criteria) The toughest part of narrowing down the permashelf list was that some favorites were too premium, limited editions, or limited availability. However, I don’t want to be without AnCnoc 18, Ben Nevis 10, Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength, Glen Scotia Victoriana, Glenmorangie Tale of the Forest, Kilchoman Loch Gorm, Laphroaig Lore, Ledaig 18, Longmorn 18, Oban Limited Editions Cask Strength, Talisker 18 (I can actually get Talisker 18 at an okay price here, but still too high for permashelf).

Yep, Roy@@Aqvavitae it's a nice one, though inferior to the old 12 yo imho, my favorite of the old core range (the 15 yo being close) and of course inferior to old age statements single-casks I had the chance to try & own for some (they're ending, so I'm really rationing them, in fact I don't drink them alone anymore savin em to share the experience...as often with unicorns & special bottles). Regarding French whisky, like I said in the chat of the vPub several times, there is currently a boom here with a variety (of approaches & styles, production & choices wise) that didn't exist before a few years ago, and as our production is still very low compared to Scotland (though progressing clearly in volume) & many producers are tiny craft ones, export & even success inside France will take some time, and even if it might appear as hard to choose, our whiskies start to be better distributed for instance in UK : TWE, again, just checked, has currently 40 products listed, from 19 different distilleries (ok, except one version locally produced, all other Couvreur products are Scottish sourced, mind you). As I get a lot of questions about French whisky in English, I will do soon a special video about this topic, with a big update as I did get a lot of new French whiskies recently, but, meanwhile, if you feel like spending some time to discover a bit some recent brands, you can have a look at my Whisky Live Paris 2023 video (it is very long but there are chapters !), or watch some of my English or bilingual reviews of French whiskies...Slainte !
