That tethering isn't just for his safety. It's to replicated the running motion too. Consider that they are running place...so when they lean into a run physics won't allow them to do anything else but fall unless they are tethered. Haha yeah, the valiant retreat of a gentleman. Tbh tho, the running man seemed to be in a lot better shape than I expected. He was going hog wild in a full anaerobic sprint, head down, body slanted completely forward in acceleration, and on top of that, he was shouting like a banshee the whole time! Wow. Full body VR experience must be immersive. Got this regular joe performing like a super soldier drowning in adrenaline.

I imagine the game would die off instantly and drop to a few thousand players and they'd all move to another game. Basically none of the call of duty skills transfer to real life skills except for maybe drone piloting. There are no restarts, pauses, cheats, etc in real life.
