Ahh.. i did not even know. Wanted to see him live. I feel his interpretation of Satie is the best
Of all classical composers, Erik Satie has composed the most deeply dark, mystic and beautiful music. He and a handful of other greats have always had a profound influence on me since i started hearing and understanding music. Its also the mystery and indescribable eeriness in Satie's compositions that keep my depression from getting to me, makes me relax and feel better because the pain and loneliness in his music appear to be worse than mine, yet beautiful at the same time. Reinbert de Leeuw is the best Satie interpreter without a doubt.

Satie achieves one of the ultimate challenges in composition: conveying immense beauty through the channel of desperate sadness, loneliness, despair. He delves into his deepest soul and seeks answers to the mystery of tears of joy, relief, emergence mingling with the choking, suffocating, mind-swirling mists of deepest lows. He blacks the white notes and whites the blacks. Skips softly, effortlessly, from the one to the other. Chiaroscuro. Juxtaposed dark and bright. Robert de Leeuw captures Satie's multi-dimensional soul perfectly.

Rest In Peace Reinbert... I'm feeling really sad, one of our greatest artists just died. As a pianist he made Satie's work immortal, and as a conductor he promoted 20th century music for 40 years. I attended many of his concerts and they were always remarkable and often brilliant.

this is just about the (perfect) right tempo at which Gnossiene 1 is to be played. The best from among my search on KZbin. Almost everybody plays it faster, which totally ruins its meditative quality. The same applies to the other Gnossienes - de Leeuw plays them beautifully.

This is how I imagine it sounding as Satie plays in a French cafe as it rains outside and the cafe is smoky from all the cigarettes … comfy, contemplative day.
