This video was such a live saver! I was so confuse d, only finding old videos that didn't explained how important the versions are. Ended up buying the new version of HANA first, oh well. Thank you so much for this tutorial! Gotta save it ~

If you're dumb like me and created a project, then imported and still dont see hanatool or vrm menu options, just close and restart and it should load correctly. Also you have to import VRM via the VRM0 menu.

Thanks for the heads up! I have no clue, why people are not able anymore to import via drag and drop tbh (but you wouldn't be the only one!) It still works for me, for some mysterious reason.

As a little heads up for everyone that isn’t too familiar with HanaTool: These 52 Blendshapes are only useful in combination with MeowFace/Android or for example iFacialMocap/iPhone. If you guys are just adding these to your model, but don’t have the right equipment to use them, then they won’t make a difference and you really don’t have to bother investing in HanaTool. The only other useful application is for the additional expression sliders, if that is something you need. :) Also: I was made aware, that we have HanaTool V5.0 out already, but from what I heard people have only problems with that one so far. So there is nothing wrong with getting the older version (since it works at least 😅) And if they didn't add any additional features, there is not much change needed anyway, for the average Vroid/.vrm user 🙂

Thank you very much for this video! So to confirm, the new blendshapes it adds won't carry over into Blender/exporting into FBX format for example?

@@tsuyunoinochikoukyo4062 To be honest, I never tried that myself. It may actually work, because you can import a converted Blender model (to.vrm) and apply these Blendshapes in Unity, so theoretically I don't see why it wouldn't transfer over. But I just never tried that, to be a 100% sure. :)

Can I activate wings with this hana tools? I saw old tutorials but my humidity doesn't show the tool menus

When you say "activate", what exactly do you mean by that? Usually if wings have animations, you can try to add them as Blendshapes...but you don't need HanaTool for that. If a wing doesn't have an animation, you could check, if you can make one yourself, right there in Unity. (depending on the type of wings, of course) Butterfly type wings would be no problem, simple angel wings would be fine too, but for more complicated ones, like opening up and closing, lije actual wings, this would have to be done in Blender beforehand (if the asset was made in Blender that is. HanaTool has nothing to do with it and as far as I know, only works for the face :)

Oh my goodness! yes!! Ive been trying to get it to work myself!! Im so happy you`ve made this video! ^^ I think I had the wrong version of unity installed, when I get to the portion for the hana tool menu I have everything but the clip builder option! I shall come back to let ya know if it worked

when i upload my avatar i see the tongue out and cheekpuff prompts but no matter how hard i try my avatar wont do them. should i not be using experimental tracking? am i missing an option to turn on in vseeface? are these expressions only usable with toggle?

Hello! Yes, exactly. For someone with only webcam tracking, these expressions are nothing but toggles. Without a tracker like Meowface for Android or ifacialmocap, for a face id capable iphone, these expressions won't trigger automatically. (I mentioned that in the pinned comment as well) Usually people know for what HanaTool is good for and just need help to get it to work. While making this video, I failed to communicate, that it won't do much for people without the right software and hardware. I apologize for that.

Hey! Just curious if you will have an overview for Hana tool V5 as well? I bought the new version as I was hoping it will be similar in how it worrks, but i got stuck as there is no clip builder I figured from the documentation/ description of V5 that it is now under Expression Builder, but something is still not okay and when I try to add the model it comes up with an error window saying "GameObject has no VRMInstance". I'm really unsure on what could be wrong and no matter how i google it I can't find anything

Likely this version also has a certain Unity/Univrm setup and you should give a look, if they mention anywhere, which one. About the error: There is one thing you have to remember too and that is to always install the univrm plugin first, whatever you do in Unity. The plugin itself contains some files that the follow up plugins, like HanaTool, need. If you are using a non-Vroid model aka a converted Blender model, then there is also the chance that the model wasn't exported/transferred correctly into vrm. And I am using a Vroid model, so I really am clueless what could be wrong. Altho I kept on googling and a few other people seem to have issues with the new releas as well I'm honestly thinking of juts buying V4 until the new version is stable enough. question: i have a vroid model i edited in blender, exported as an fbx. and then changed to a vrm. when I use hanatool (skipping the reader and choosing other in clipbuilder) I get all the blendshapeclips added in my blendshapes, but when I click on these blendshapes nothing happens, and I cant go into the blendshape options because they are not there and it's just base vroid blendshapes (ex: opening up menu, choosing cheekpuff in the menu, and in the preview, nothing happens). hanatool basically just added a lot of blendshapeclips but doesn't add the blendshapes themselves. does anyone know how to fix this, or someone who does?

If you try to add in the Blendshapes before entering Blender and then making the adjustments, it should theoretically work. (I helped someone recently, that had the Blendshapes working in Blender through this) The “other” option on HanaTool seems to work more for Blender only models, like when you are doing them from scratch (and they have to be humans and stuff…but a friend said to me, that at times it would be just easier to set them up manually in Blender then, instead of bothering with HanaTool. I am still learning Blender, so I can help better with that later and make a proper tutorial about how to do it manually. :)

If anybody was able to apply the Reader stage of Hana tool, but then got a 'Faild to get Meshes name from BlendShapeClip' when trying to use the Clipbuilder - Please let me know if you find a fix :')

This is a very specific error. Is this a pure Vroid model (basically freshly exported) or a model that gone through some changes?

@@LadyAska freshly exported 1,x model, no clothes or anything fancy, just run through blender to fix bones with CATS

There we go...that may be the problem. Try this and see if it works: Try to use HanaTool, as if you got a Blender model now. Instead of "Vroid", you go with the "other" option when using the ClipBuilder. Another option you could try, if this doesn't work: Export from Vroid and apply HanaTool first. Then run it through Blender. This Blender fix can mess up some of the standard names, that HanaTool is expecting.

oooo this is exciting but does this version support animation? for example your video on how to get smoother transitions with an animator control (forgive me if I don't make sense, i'm still kinda a noob at this but your tutorials have been VERY HELPFUL!! thank you again)

Hello! Sadly no, the "animation" version of Unity/univrm is still 2029.4.31f1/0.92.0. BUT what you can do is: Use the mentioned version in this video here, to apply the new HanaTool Blendshapes and then export your avatar. After that you open a new Unity project and use this time the "animation compatible" version of Unity, to set up your animations. All informations, like the Blendshapes and everything is still saved on your new .vrm export. Its a bit more work, but it should be just fine, if you do it like this :)

Sorry for the dumb question, but how do I buy the HanaTool? I have a Pixiv account and can go all the way to the "Confirm payment details", but it does not allow me to click the "Pay" option at the end.

That is a really weird problem...I am also using PayPal, but never had that problem before. Maybe its a country thing? (like where your PayPal is located) Like I can use the one from Germany just fine, while my friends from Brazil can't use theirs for these type of payments (but thats just a guess ^^")

I was trying to add Hana tool on another vroid model and now the eye brows are not moving, instead it’s the eyes stretching but when I go to adjust the blend shape it shows a type of clipping in the ear, do you know what might’ve caused that and how to fix it?

That is very specific and it could be, that your model was so customized in shape (for example sharper cheeckbones or way smaller chin), that the Blendshapes clip through now, when apllied. Same with the eyebrows...I had eyebrows disappear on me completely or clip through half of the face. Though in your case, it may be that they are in a position, that is not effected by the Blendshapes. I would really have to see the model, to check what causes these specifically, to give you advice on how to fix it. I'm getting this message when I'm trying to clip build. Any idea why this message is coming up. What's weird is I successfully perfect sync models with these recommendations and now it's not working anymore. I wonder why. "Calling apply or revert methods on an object which is not part of a prefab instance is not supported"

Try to switch into prefab mode first. It's the little arrow besides your characters name, once you moved it to the hierarchy on the left. After that, try again.

This happens sometimes, when you don't install the univrm plugin as the first plugin...or if its a Blender model, that wasn't transferred correctly to vrm.

Great video as always! I've got the version of HanaTool from like a year ago. I'm not sure which version. You saw me make custom expressions with it. Is there any need to upgrade to V4 if I'm already making BlendShapes that work fine? Is there any value to upgrading?

Hey! Hope you are doing well ^^ There is no value in upgrading right now. There is a version 5 available as well, that is very unstable, so in any way, I recommend the older versions, as they work just fine. :)

hey, I have a question: do you know if HanaTool and the ARKit Face Tracking the same? I seen the Hana was just a easier tool.

Hello! Arkit describes specifically the technology apple uses, to track your face for example and so, in a way, yes: If people talk about Arkit Blendshapes, they mean blendshapes that were optimized to work with apples tracking technology. And HanaTool just enables you, to add these necessary (and standard) blendshapes or better: the necessary names, these Blendshapes have to have, to work with this kind of tracking technology. I hope that helped :)

Remember that it will only work, if you use Meowface/with Android or if you have an iPhone, than ifacialmocap or similar tracking apps will do. These can be connected to VSeeFace/VMagicmirror/Luppet etc. and used to track your face more accurately, thanks to these additional Blendshapes :)

How does this compare to poyomi unity tools mod tools and miu vroid to Pmx tools? I have a convoluted set up because I like to make vroid models for vrchat and mmd

These are all completely different things and setups. HanaTool is just a tool to automatically put 52 Blendshapes on a Vroid model. These are the same 52 Blendshapes that one would usually create by hand/manually in Blender (Vroidmodel or not) If VRChat or MMD doesn’t support the ARkit Blendshapes, it would be pretty useless adding them in to be honest. This Tool does literally nothing else than that

I'm having trouble with univrm because i purchased hana tools v5 and someone told me it is for 1.0 models, the problem is univirm doesn't give me an "import" option, only export. is there any way to get the import option for 1.0?

You usually just drag the .vrm into the bottom assets window. The old version didn't have an "import" either. In case you can't get it to work like this, but are able to export your model in the old 0.0 format, feel free to contact me on Discord (@ladyaska). I'll send you the version 4 of HanaTool, as most plugins aren't really able to work with 1.0 yet anyway. It will do the same thing, but literally without all the trouble :)

hey, I have one Question in Expression Builder when I drag the model it says "GameObject has no VRMInstance" Can you tell me how to fix this?

That may either mean you didn't install the univrm plugin first or that your model is not a vrm model. That can happen, when you imported it into Blender or it's a Blender model, but you didn't *really* converted it into a vrm model before export. Because it doesn't matter if its a Vroid model or a Blender model, the format has to still be .vrm for this whole thing to function. Now your problem could be caused by something else entirely, but that are the instances in which I encountered this error. If this doesn't solve your problem, maybe tell me a bit more what was done prior to the model, which Unityversion and univrm versions you used etc. :)

@@LadyAska its VRM model I imported model directly from vroid studio to unity through univrm and about the versions my unity is 2020.3.1f1 and univrm is 0.108.0 and hana tool is 5_0_2_Vrm_En

I'm using the correct unity version, and univrm version, but the HANATOOL tab doesn't show up and just gives me an error that it "can't find UNIVRM10"

By any chance, did you export your vrm as a vrm1.0? (You can choose that from Vroid Studio, when you name your export file) This format is really not supported as of now. If you still get the error, feel free to hop on Discord and message me there directly. I am available to help for a bit :)

@@EliseVTuberr That's the problem. This tutorial is for version 4. Version 5 is not functioning well atm, according to other users. (and there is no advantage to using the version 5) For version 5 you'll need another Unity/Univrm version and the setup is different as well. The reason I didn't cover this one is: that it's not working well atm

I’ve been struggling with face tracking for awhile now so I’m definitely gonna try this but I have a question, but after I do this if I were to add accessories in blender would it mess up the Hana tool sorry if this is a lot I’ve just been going back and forth with this and want to be safe

From my own experience, everything Blender will render HanaTool that was added BEFORE adding accessories, useless. The software counts with the fact that the avatar has a specific amount of vertices, which is a given, right out of Vroid. BUT HanaTool has an option for Blender models, so you would have to add your accessories BEFORE adding HanaTool and then use the non Vroid option to create the Blendshapes after with HanaTool. (When I say non-Vroid, it’s the same HanaTool version, but in the moment of Clipbuilding, you select the “Other” option. Reading Blendshapes is then not necessary anymore too)

Hello! Maybe try the method I described in the beginning of this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZSwpIebZ92XeM0si=4_LsQxnl8O_3M3PO (it unlocks eye tracking...but mostly, in HanaTool you can't set the eye movement, as this is captured live, by your actual eye movement!)

sorry to bother but I think you might of mistyped the Unity version you used in your description. in the video it says Unity 2020.3.13 but in your description it says (used version in this video was 2020.4.31f1)

Yes! This was brought to my attention recently! So in version 5 its made specifically for vrm 1.0 files BUT that also means you would have to export as vrm 1.0 from Vroid and the univrmplgin has to be for 1.0 as well (they come in 2 versions now). Since vrm1 is still a bit experimental, I recommend exporting with vrm 0, downloading the vrm 0 version of univrm (it should mention somewhere for which version it is for) and version 4 of HanaTool (the one in the video) and then it should work completly fine with it. Just make sure you decide which vrm you are going for (1 or 0) and then be consistent with the rest :)

Hey! I heard there is something you can do like this with Vrchat models, where you link certain actions together. Sadly I didn't have time yet to try that myself and if it requires to add the animations beforehand in Blender. I want to get better with animations in Unity too, to teach you guys stuff like custom animation loops, but so far I don't get consistent results yet. I hope soon though :)

You can make that on blender, import your VRM model, and create a BLENSHAPE only for the ears. Import on unity again and find your blinking expression (or any other expression), turn on the blendshape for your ears in that expression.

That's why I recommend the older Version honestly. There is no reason to upgrade atm, if V5 isn't working correctly. :/ V4 is getting the job done (and is actually working) I have no clue what exactly made them release version 5, if the old HanaTool had nothing wrong with it...
