I have to announce with a certain degree of shame, that my default desktop application has become VSCode for almost everything... Damn you MS, but this time you really put out something that I can truly call "my guilty pleasure". I do use the vim plugin in VSCode though.

The PyCharm flatpak was broken for a minute, and I used VSCode for about a month. If it had been my first full-fat IDE I would have probably loved it, but there were too many little annoyances (mostly around the built-in interpreter) that I ended up downloading the official JetBrains toolbox like some sort of _mac user_ 🤢
@deltapi8859
@deltapi8859 Жыл бұрын
@@GSBarlev yeah, I think for python PyCharm is better. However for people who want little intervening and have to work with the terminal intimately VSCode is sufficient and actually helps you with that workflow.
@GSBarlev
@GSBarlev Жыл бұрын
@@deltapi8859I'll take your word for it. I said "interpreter" when I meant "terminal" and I'm remembering now what the worst parts were: - Default shell wasn't bash (on Linux!) - Default VSCode keybinds overrode bash keyboard shortcuts (I want to say it was either Ctrl-E or Ctrl-K) Sure these are things you can fix in the VSCode settings, but if I wanted to spend most of my development time customizing my configuration, I'd just use emacs. 🤣
@deltapi8859
@deltapi8859 Жыл бұрын
@@GSBarlev I've been to lazy to learn emacs. I haven't even realized that there is no bash in VSCode ... It does tabcomplete and pipe etc. for loops etc don't seem to work, but running bash scripts as files does. Pretty interesting. Never realized.

I am currently at a point where I use both. I used to avoid vim, only using it if I absolutely needed to. The idea of spending hours upon hours learning all the keyboard shortcuts and building muscle memory. But after actually using it for some time, I realized these things can be learned simply through experience. I am slowly getting more comfortable with it.

I've actually never got into vscode for the simple reason that I couldn't understand how to code in it, nothing feels intuitive at all, you can't identify which plugins to install, and even then you have to configure so much stuff, just to have something steal 8gb of ram for some simple c /cpp code, also bad support for assembly. For the keybindings specifically, you have so much keybindings by default, none of which you actually want to use, there is no obvious way to deactivate all that crap to reconfigure it, you have to make some special json config for any c code you want to do, The vim plugins is terrible because of the fact there is so many vscode keybindings, like I've tried multiple time to go vs code, thinking I could make it work, but I just can't, I must be stupid

the one thing that VSCode has over Neovim for me, which I can’t seem to replicate, is its handling of git conflicts. It’s such a great three window diff, with no git markers to be found. I still open vscode whenever i’m hit with merge conflicts. if I could find a better way to do this in neovim, I would uninstall vscode
