I'm new at this, and to see that there's a science to it, but not an exact science, is encouraging. Everyone seems to have their own preferences, and logic on what to do. I'm doing cane pruning, not spur pruning, but this is still good to know. Thank you, for the lesson.

Yes, pruning most plants is part art and part science. Each plant is an individual that requires some subjective decisions and the experience and knowledge to predict how individual plants may respond to pruning cuts. Grapes are unique in there vigor and can be pruned back quite heavily. Training systems also need to be taken into account when pruning grapes. Spur pruning is more suited to the Vertical Shoot Positioning training system, while cane pruning is more suited for the Four Arm Kniffen training system.

I like the way youve positioned the cordons relevant to the wires, I know each position has a purpose but in this video, its pretty obvious that pruning is made easier. Well done, first grower Ive seen explain that they initially prune everything above that one wire. I watched a video and the grower has a taller trunk...and he prunes all the up-facing spurs off of the top cordons so the canes grow downward so that he can put the bird netting over the crops and they dont get all hung up as easilly...that was very good info too.

nice to see the grapes have no competition for water the get. Mine at 3-4 ft apart and just not productive regardless of pruning. I think I have to kill a vine or two to separate them 8ft to make them productive

Hi, why leaving 4-6 buds when most growers suggest 2 bud spur?
@kevinschoessow6223 жыл бұрын
You are correct in that most commercial fruit growers will prune in general to 2 buds per spur. There are lots of modifications to any pruning system depending on individual plant, variety, locations and personal experience. Here in Spooner in our Display Garden are primary goal is for display purposes and not necessarily production. We tend to long prune our spurs and then decide after bud break if we need to prune back to a smaller number. Winters can be harsh on our plants and this provides an opportunity to see what buds are most vigorous once spring growth happens. Kevin

Appreciate the question. Just another reminder of how important it is as an educator to qualify or footnote the why. This is one of my first public facing KZbin videos and it's good to get feedback.

How much space required plant to plant
@spooneragresearchstation2 жыл бұрын
In our climate, we typically leave 8 feet between plants and 8 feet between rows to allow for growth an proper sunlight to reach the vines.

Are those 2 trunks representing two separate plants, or is that from one plant?

Both trunks are from the same plant.

Yes this is spur pruning for the training system called Vertical Shoot Positioning
