VTOL VR Gets Weather (BETA)

This is under the public_testing testing branch. In Steam right click on the game and select Properties. Then click on Betas tab on the left. There you will find a drop down list. Go down to the public_testing branch. The game will need to update. You can play SP and MP but only on MP with other people on the public testing branch so you may not see many games going. Obviously, expect bugs and issues since this is a beta testing branch, though my playthroughs have been mostly bug free I haven't done complex missions or other changes.
I'm not sure on SP, but in MP the host can click the "o" key on their keyboard and control the weather (on the flat screen display, not in VR) so you can have dynamic weather changes, or just play around.
We all thought it was just going to be an UFC (Up Front Controller) and frequencies. Baha brings us weather!!! This is absolutely amazing, and I have been having fun just punching through clouds and doing ILS approaches. Who needs to shoot any weapons, though this new game mechanic will open up missions with all new challenges and changes.
Anyway, I just wanted to show it off. Sometimes these updates come out and a person is gone for work for a few days, or just doesn't have a computer handy to try it out. You can take short look at what the changes look like visually.
Also, the AV-42 also got a cockpit update.
There was a definite performance hit. Players with older computers may struggle with some of the weather conditions. That being said, overall I was able to play just fine even additional load of recording and the S-Cam.

1:15 The setting for unit icons in single-player is in VTOL VR's settings menu, under Gameplay I believe (I'm at work now and don't remember the menu categories off the top of my head).

Im pretty sure you can turn it off when you go to TSD, and then select radar and you can switch if you want FOE or ALLY visible.

@@kiwi7556 That's only for the icons that the TSD generates for your helmet in the F-45 and EF-24; this is about the generic blue ( ) and orange < > that appear around nearby units regardless of the aircraft you're flying. Those have to be turned off either in your game settings for single-player, or by unchecking the "Unit Icons" box when making a multiplayer lobby.

@@kiwi7556 That's actually a completely separate bit of display. That's part of the HMCS display on TSD aircraft (which the T55 is not one). It shows at any distance, where as this blue unit marker only shows when fairly close.

i dont think it ever will, unless vtol gets more aircraft (like 5 times as many), hotas&flatscreen support, which would not really be possible with just one guy working on it, not to mention that dcs has real aircraft.

It can be useful depending on the mission. The mission planner can setup an event where a ground soldier can lase a target so you could accomplish specific actions based on that. Or could do a more accurate TopGun 2 run where the trailing aircraft does the lasing.

Before you launch the mission there is a check box for “Show unit icons” in the same area as the “allow late joins”. Basically the menu for setting up the missions. Personally I like turning it off as it allows for more immersion and less orange brackets showing up on low level flying. Hope this helps

Best thing I think is to just jump in and fly around and figure things out as you go, once you have it down everything is very intuitive

honestly it looks way worse than it is. in some sense it's complicated in that it has a lot of systems that you'll need to learn eventually if you wanna be a well rounded pilot. On the other hand each individual system is quite simple and easy to learn. Honestly I'd recommend just doing what I did, hop in the game, do the tutorials (they'll teach you the very basics to get you airborne and shooting essential weapons), then just pick a system or weapon you want to learn better and start tinkering and watching yt videos and reading the reddit etc. you'll pickup all the complexities little by little, one system and weapon at a time. it helps to have a friend to show you the ropes, but if you dont have that, the reddit and discord are all really supportive! before you know it you'll have 200hrs in game and you'll be the one people are coming to for help learning! Hope you enjoy the game, see you in the skies!

It always looks worse then it is. It's still very approachable compared to many other flight sims. It always helps to have a friend who plays it too, since one of the planes is specifically setup as a trainer aircraft.

Can confirm whats already been stated, just started 2 weeks ago and all it takes is practice. I have probably 15hrs max and the one thing i cant perform in is aerial refueling

@@MetalFalcon99 As of right now, no. Well, actually right now you just don't do the public beta and there won't be any weather. We may see people creating their own tags for lobbies like [no weather] or what not. It would be problematic for a user to be able disable weather just for themselves because it would be a huge advantage in pvp. That all being said....I think most of the time lighter weather conditions (which don't seem to be as hard on performance) will be used simply because it is operationally very challenging. There is no control over cloud heights and anything like broken/overcast/rain is actually very low, and tied to world height not terrain height. So you can't have a 10,000 ft overcast sky which would be cool and force low level action putting you in range of manpads to get visual but still have this distinct above cloud operation and below cloud. The overcast layer is very low (like 2-4 thousand at sea level). Any terrain in the map and its almost impossible to see/identify them if they are actually in those clouds. It also appears, from what I can tell, that AI units are completely unaffected by bad visibility so again the use of something like scattered layer weather will give some life and depth into the world without making people dive blind into low level clouds. CFIT accidents would be near constant.

It's now in the main game. Nothing is needed...the weather is already in there. You can control it from a number of areas like hosting a multiplayer game will have a weather panel.

@@landonearley4607 It's initially defined by the mission creator. However, if you hit the letter O on your keyboard a new menu will show up on the flat screen (not VR) which lets you change weather and time on the fly.

@@Lukeskysquwker If you want to actually access the Options to change the weather dynamically in free flight for example you need to press "O" on the keyboard. Make sure VTOL VR is the active Tab for that and be carefull with the power hungry options so the game doesnt crash immediatly
