- This fantastic Vu-Meter is designed to display two different signals, with a range from -20dB to +3dB. Each channel is driven by an LM3916, a great IC for Vu-Meters. I created this PCB thanks to the service offered by JLCPCB, choosing the color "Matte Black" From today on jlcpcb.com there is a big news! "10 PCBs of each color for only 2$"
- In DOT mode the LED 1 stays on at reduced brightness, as a full scale indicator.
After trying the excellent service offered by JLCPCB I recommend it, the quality of the circuits is high, customer service is always available and professional, the time of realization is short and the delivery of PCBs is by express courier.
JLCPCB is a great place to get hight quality custom circuit boards at an extremely low price, you can buy 10 PCB Boards for 2 Dollars.

a good project but my opinion is that the lights should be mounted on the opposite side of the components in order to be much easier to mount in an audio project

You could also mount the LED's on the edge of the board so the legs are bent over where they solder and edge mount in the front panel. Of course you would loose the curve design this way though.

Nice! But it's the second time when you use caps much taller than the LEDs and also the IC's on the sockets. Whenever a display is involved LEDs, 7 segment or LCD you must take into consideration how that product/device will be encased or panel mounted. Dumitru Baluta also made a sensible comment, mounting the LEDs on the other side and I might add, the bar/peak jumper (even better a small switch) also. Choosing black PCB was a good choice as behind a smoked plastic those LEDs will look great. Keep up the good work!
@Stefano91ste

Hi, Thanks for the compliments :) - I use higher capacitors for two reasons: 1) I don't like lying down. 2) I have many types of capacitors, but I don't have any form of any value, and to save a little money I tend to use the components I have available. - Iif you want you can mount the LEDs by prolonging with wires to mount them in any box or panel, I designed this board taking care of the design so that the PCB was beautiful to see.. I love doing this :) - For the dot / bar mode I use a jumper so that it is easier to find it for those wishing to replicate the circuit.. unfortunately it is not always easy to find small switches. For the rest, I agree with you that a switch would be very convenient.

My Honor, Sir, I'm a very old man. You are a very smart and good professional. I did your vu meter ,1dioda at input and 2.7k resistors (2pcs). It's not sensitive enough (I'd use it as a preamplifier). Question ,don't the two diode inputs result in this higher signal level? In his first drawings were resistors 2.2k. Which is better? Thank you very much for your patience.

I've been working on what I use the vu meter for two years. My being should go in dot and bar mode as well. The drawing I made is Mr. Stefano91's drawing, it works nicely. My problem is that the amplification signal is not strong enough. I should hook it up to the speaker ,I bought a mini test amplifier ,go ahead,everything is ok. When I wanted to connect it to the 2x15w amplifier, the speaker is short-circuited and there is no sound. TDA7266 Audio Stereo Amplifier Module ,this small amplifier ,go,TDA7297 Amplifier Board AC/DC 12V 2x15W 15W+15W this is the other amplifier for which vu meter is made but does not want to go. I changed it so much that I grounded it, connected the outside of the knob to the gnd so that there would be no humming. What to do? With a 68-year-old head, what do I think of, I just started two years ago, or three years ago. Please someone help! I posted a video,please see,what is wrong,I have been trying your drawings for two years,now it would go,but it doesn't. Is the amplifier to blame?

Hi, the capacitor is connected correctly.. but unfortunately coming from a pack of cheap capacitors (40 cap. for 1$) the white line that should mark the negative is drawn not in correspondence of the pin - if it were connected wrong, the vu-meter would not work.. during the circuit assembly I considered only the length of the pins to distinguish + and - it was my mistake not to change the capacitor with a better one, I also explained it in another comment :)

@@Stefano91ste Thanks for the reply, and great work. I get that those chips are set to those values. My question is: how do you calibrate the chips to whatever you're sending them? -20dB or +3dB is a bit like saying -20% or +3%. Percent of what? Without a reference point, it's meaningless. I imagine that those numbers are referencing voltage. IE: Pro Audio Line Level, 0dBVU is = +4dBU which is referenced to 1.23Volts. In Consumer Line Level 0dBVU is = -10dBV and I don't remember the voltage, but its significantly less. Mix those two up, and the meter is useless. I think what you're doing with these chips is fantastic, and I want to put them to use in my studio. But I need to know what information they're providing me, otherwise they're just pretty lights. Which has its place too!🙂

The potentiometer that you already have on the LM2917 should suffice, alternatively on the LM3914 try to connect a potentiometer in series with the input signal.. I'm not 100% sure it will work, but I would do it

Hi. Goood work! - Difficult to tell you exactly how much current it can consume, however a 9/12V DC power supply with a current of at least 800mA/h should be more than enough .. (My 40 LED Vu-Meter absorbs 500 mA of current with all the LEDs on)

Ciao, Stefano, and thanks for you patience... Mystery solved. Before send the prototype to JLCPCB, I think the secondary IC was moved by an error, as a consequence some tracks to secondary IC, I can see not maching in IC holes exactly. I'm trying to solve it.... The other problem I have see is that the sound signal have to be amplified before to connect to circuit. Thanks other time for your patience. Finally, it works, but only left channel, right channel continues without work. Even I've cut the part that had the contacts moved and I have rebuilt this part with cable and a piece of a pre-drilled plate but I can't get it to work either. Tomorrow I will see to rebuild that part again. I want to avoid having to resubmit the design for manufacturing until I am sure it works. But if the left side works, the right should work. You have made it works.

@PeterMilanovski
@PeterMilanovski 5 жыл бұрын
Electronics Projects - Stefano91ste yes and the signal is a voltage.... and because you have used the db (Decibel) scale, 0db needs to be referenced to a certain voltage.... otherwise you could have marked the scale to represent output power in watts... also.... you really should have included two trimmer pots to be able to adjust the level... for example... if I were to connect this meter to a CD player's line level output, I would play a CD that has a 1kHz signal burned onto it and then I would adjust the level on the meter to the 0db point so that I can see which CD's have been recorded properly... that's why the last two led's are meant to be red and the one in between the red led's and the 0db point is Orange.... the power led should have been included at the bottom of the level led's, that way you end up with rows of 11 intended of 10... and never have the word professional on your product, everyone knows that if it says professional.... it's probably from China and it's not professional.... otherwise! great job, it looks really good but the led's should have been installed on the back side... I have a graphic equaliser that was made in China and the potentiometers can't be mounted to the front panel because the capacitors and the other components are in the way... but that's Chinese intelligence for you....

I checked, the capacitor is connected correctly.. but unfortunately coming from a pack of cheap capacitors (40 cap. for 1$) the white line that should mark the negative is drawn not in correspondence of the pin - if it were connected wrong, the vu-meter would not work as well as the first ones I made, (like this my old and orrible video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anTWmImil9BsqtE ) and the capacitor would be in a short-circuit situation. therefore in presence of signal it would overheat up to burn.
