Since I don't have the means to build something like this. It's nice to see someone else do it. It needs is some form of automatic igniter for the gasifier. But I guess you've already thought of that :-) Hope you will have great success with this. Best regards from Sweden.

Thanks for the kind words. You are a little ahead of me on the O2 sensor but yes this is coming. So for now it is used as a reference for setting the mixture. I have much more automated systems in works for this as well. We want to get the machines so they are push button operation. You can simply start the engine on gas and start the gasifier with out the blower and then switch over once up to temp.

That's the nicest and most compact gasifier I've seen so far. I would like to build one like this for our house. Do you provide a DIY plan for this unit?
@Thrive-Off-Grid

Build a charcoaol unit. Wood gasifiers are finiky and unless you can automate it; it will not self sustain. There is no such thing as a tar free wood gasifier and there never will be. Charcoal with water injection will produce higher energy dense gas, with out tar problems and they will self sustain. Its also easier fuel to produce. Its a ton less work to produce wood fuel for a kiln. The kiln does the work not you. Not to mention you are unlimited to what you can use rather be confined with what will fit a chipper or chunker.

This is a very old video and we have since long evolved from this. I will never build or recommenmd a wood gasification system for small engine power ever again. Like everyone I took charcoal at face value and would not even consider build one until a few years ago. Then I built one and well now Im eating lots of crow. Becuase charcoal is hands down the better solution. Dont waste your time and money trying to build a wood gasifier it dont work.

@@Thrive-Off-Grid ❤ thanks a lot for that response and explanation. I see the main obstacle with a wood gasifier is the tar. Do you have a DIY plan for a charcoal gasifier?

@@HavardHammer Yes go into my videos and look for the DIY Ammo Box Gasifier. You can follow it exact or take the idea and scale it or make modifications to make what ever you have work. This version is for a down draft but you can build this so it is up draft. An updraft will be easier to make but with some sacrifice to gas quality. But it will still work and run an engine. There is also a support thread on our forum. You are welcome to create your own build thread there. I will then help you when I can. www.thriveoffgrid.net/forum/diy-user-projects/ammo-box-diy-no-weld-gasifier?origin=notification

@@Thrive-Off-Grid thank you very much for that info. Is a charcoal gasifier more efficient than the wood gasifier? Do you have a system to run your electricity needs for a house?

You have built your gasifier the same way I have! I've only built mine in my mind though ;-) Really nice build! Is the air/fuel mixture actively controlled by the o2 sensor, or is it only used to manually be able to set the right mixture? With a 2 cylinder engine, would it be possible to run 1 cylinder on gasoline an use the other to get the gasifier started and skip the blower entirely?

You would need to email me and then when I have the next machine built you could come on site. But you have a very small window as machines ship with in days of completion. You can view the 2020 product line here and use the contact page for email. www.thriveoffgrid.net/flexgasifier

Here you can start by building this here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3bVXmeKbq1gfa8 Or Get the Imbert plans here. www.thriveoffgrid.net/forum/diy-user-projects/handbook-of-biomass-gasifier-and-engine-systems I no longer support direct raw fuel gasification. There is absolutely no way to guarantee tar will be eliminated. Even when a raw fueler is making " clean " gas it is still introducing soots to the engine. These soots get into the oil and degrade it. Tar in the valve train will destroy the guides and then settle in the oil and will not ever fully drain out of the oil eventually reducing the longevity of the engine. Charcoal is actually easier and much faster fuel to produce. There is no waiting for fuel to dry only for it to cool. The energy to produce charcoal if done efficiently is no more than fueling a wood chipper and the waste that is produced from the wood chipper. If you add in the energy required to dry the fuel, charcoal is actually more efficient less energy intensive. Your physical labor is only a fraction of what it is processing fuel for a chipper, running the chipper and then screening that fuel. charcoal is by far better technology and is clean and safe for your engine. Ive done both and did raw fuels for nearly a decade. The only way I will do raw fuels again is if it is a hybrid system involving a charcoal reactor that can fully crack all the tar and moisture. Otherwise never again. Charcoal also runs 100% more stable and does not require complex filtering or the complexity and expense for advanced automation. Raw fuel gasification for engine power MUST be automated to self sustain period.

I would like to propose your system to our park district as part of a renewable energy demonstration project. Do you have something like a cost/benefit analysis that I could use as part of the proposal? Thanks.

Send an email to sales@vulcangasifier.com and Ill see what I can do. Your operating cost depends on many factors. Where are you getting your fuel from? is it a free source? Are you putting labor into processing your fuels? What is the cost of the system?. These are all things to think about when trying to calculate your operating cost.

Oh my god this is beautiful haha. I wondered if anyone had made a totally automated gasifier and this was the first search result. Now my thoughts are, how can I make one that's entirely mechanical utilizing no electronics at all. Pondering...

This is an old video. New ones are far more advanced than this one. Electronics made it a lot easier, I dont know how you would with out them or why. Nothing wrong with modern technology this isnt the 1980's any more.

@@Thrive-Off-Grid The thought is, in a SHTF scenario where service parts are unavailable for electronic controls systems an entirely mechanical solution would prove more robust. Much easier to turn a new part on a lathe than to try and source replacement electronics. This may not even be your target market, I'm just mostly thinking out loud here.
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 5 жыл бұрын
In that scenario you simply run it manually and bypass automation. There is no way to control air fuel mixture with out mixture controls that require electronics. You could use early style automotive wiper delay mechanisms. for grate and hopper agitation. I bit more complex than simple cycle timer control. To have back up parts would be the way to go. Otherwise you can always run in manual mode. Until the SHTF you have the automation to rely on. In that situation myself I would have our Flex Mini with the simpler automation much like this machine here. If any thing breaks I can still run it in a manual mode.
@ACA332
@ACA332 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that makes sense, I was just thinking perhaps based off the EGT of the generator, you could mechanically regulate AFR with a bimetallic spring to keep it in the sweet spot. The response time would be god awful though.

How would that detect oxygen content in exhaust? Air / fuel mixture has zero to do with rootlet position angle. The gas is constantly fluctuating both in volume and volubility.

Do you make different size systems?
@Thrive-Off-Grid
@Thrive-Off-Grid 10 жыл бұрын
Yes we build 2 kW systems on up to 25 kW so far. The larger systems are direct AC systems. Newer versions will have the GM LS-1 5.3 ltr power plant with electronic controlled air fuel mixer. We offer a slightly less expensive version of this machine that is not a CHP rather it is power only. We offer this same system in a 2 kW version as well.
