always feels weird watching the t-72s zooming in reverse when irl they can only go 4km/h in reverse

I figured they'd improved on that since WGRD, very funny that Eugen still hasn't realised.

Why so slow in reverse?

@@meemstar2333 it's not a bad transmission lmao. So a country that had previously made fast reversing vehicles just suddenly forgot how to make a transmission? No. The real reason is that it was designed like that on purpose, and it was influenced by several factors: 1) From the IS-4 onwards the Soviets would focus on making lighter and smaller tanks, which meant the space for the gearbox in the T-72 was limited. 2) The T-72 has a single reverse gear, which makes reversing inherently slower than tanks with more reverse gears obviously, but this has its reasons. It would make the gearbox cheaper to produce, which is great for a tank destined for mass production and it also would make it more reliable, since less gears means less parts that can break. And most importantly, it would make the gearbox smaller. 3) On a more technical level, the T-72's gearbox was geared for a very high ratio in reverse. Skipping the engineering lesson here, in short it means that the T-72 had tons of torque available in reverse, think of it as 1st gear on your car, but in reverse. Which was great for what the reverse gear was needed for in the T-72, being able to get the tank out of muddy or treacherous terrain if it ever happened to get stuck, or tow other tanks in the battlefield in the event they were hit or broke down (this is linked to Soviet tank tactics, explanation in the next point). 4) This is the most crucial point. And it is that Soviet tank doctrine at the time was all about overwhelming NATO forces with offensive waves, so the tank was never designed with reversing in mind since in an ideal scenario they'd only be charging forward into defending NATO tanks, reversing was, as explained in the previous point, mainly for towing other tanks or being able to get unstuck under its own power in situations where a NATO tank would've had to wait for a recovery vehicle. That by the way, is another reason why gun depression is so limited on soviet tanks, no it's not because they were somehow unable to design a tank that could depress its gun past 5 degrees, it's because they were never designed to fight hull down from defensive positions, since again, doctrine would have it that Soviet tanks would be charging across European plains offensively. As for why this is not represented in WARNO, it's not because Eugen doesn't know or hasn't realized. Everyone and their grandmother knows Soviet tanks reverse slowly, and if by some miracle they weren't aware, you can be sure the "erm aktchually" part of the community would've let them know instantly. The reason is most likely because WARNO is first and foremost a game, and the most important aspect of a fun PvE/PvP game is to be balanced to some degree. In WARNO you can't have thousands of Soviet tanks rolling into a couple hundred NATO tanks, so it would be a horrible idea to give them their real reverse speed because then you would have tanks that can only push forward in an environment where that doesn't work because you don't have a numbers advantage.

I like the 7th panzer, they have arguably the most value for money tank force in the game. What does sour the deck for me are the atrocious IFVs, you get only a handful of BTRs and so most of your stuff will be coming in with BMP-1s and those are next to useless. And yes, you can support with your tanks, you can even bring double MG T-55s for pretty much the same price as an actually useful IFV, but that still leaves you wasting money on a slow transport that contributes nothing at all.
