What's your favorite engine to work on? In what platform? And what's the one vehicle that makes you cringe when you see it pull into the lot? Every technician has at least 1
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 жыл бұрын
Touareg's come to mind... but then again, it's probably because we don't get that many. I don't like anything that I have not done / worked on before (or have seen more than a few times). So I guess if I worked on them more often, then they would also come off of my list. I like all (up to 2005) 4 cylinder engines... everything newer has too many gadgets / parts attached under the hood. Again... the more I work on the stuff, the more comfy I guess I will be. We don't do anything & everything and we don't see anything & everything in the shop. We are mainly a PM (preventative maintenance) shop... and seem to get more 4 cylinder customers than anything else. I used to like rebuilding aircooled engines (when I first started, we saw lots)... now a days, it seems that brakes, clutches, oil changes, timing belts etc keep us busy.
@MrErikw26
@MrErikw26 9 жыл бұрын
Any jeep up to 2005, Chrysler did not pay attention designing that that. Take the steering box out to remove the radiator that always crack. And like like you, anything I haven't seen/done before. Timing belts on Honda v6 can make me cringe. Love working on Ford, and Hyundai. We are mostly a PM shop as well. We don't see or fix everything and anything. It gets interesting though

I just tried to replace the elbow hose, sadly it waa already broken by the joint and the plastic all fragile. While pulling the metall ring out, alot of pieces fell down that I did not manage to pick up with any tool I had, which left me quite devastated. But after googling around and founs you video, I will try to use our Dyson Vacuum with a smaller hose, HOPEFULLY it will get all the pieces out. If not, I'm screwed and have to take it to a mechanic. There's a metal gasket between the breather housing & engine block (part #10 in the following link / image). Anything that falls into that PCV hole, will sit at the bottom of the breather housing. The gasket has slots that prevent stuff from falling into the engine / oil pan. A narrow vacuum tube should be able to suck up what fell in. The assembly of hoses that you removed at 3:50 is it possible to repair those if 1 joint leaks? Or do I have to get new ones?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 жыл бұрын
Some of those hoses have special bends in them (the hose was "molded" into that shape). If you try to replace one of those hoses with a regular hose, the hose might kink and not pass any air. Otherwise, any hose that is straight(ish) can be replaced with an equally sized hose.

@EXOVCDS

It's a "C" clip... the housing has 2 slots for the C clip to sit in. The C clip is what holds the plastic elbow in the housing. If there is no C clip, then the elbow should just pull out. Over time, the rubber seal (at the base of the elbow) can get stuck to the housing making it difficult to remove the elbow. Breaking the elbow into pieces and picking out the pieces from the housing is sometimes necessary when trying to replace it.

Great video, the crankcase breather is putting up a real fight with me, disintegrating and the stupid copper part of the breather is now stuck in breather hole with disintegrated rubber around it. I have also managed to crack / snap one of the solid vac lines that are under the metal piece bolted to the inlet with x2 5mm Allen bolts. Oh and the 10mm bolt that holds the air pipe to the underside of this is rusted solid. So.. any ideas on part numbers for the hard lines and I'm thinking it may be an inlet manifold off job to gain enough access.. grrr cars lol

@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 жыл бұрын
stuzman52 The last piece that I used the long needle nose pliers on? That was part of the PCV Elbow that connects to the 2-way check valve (PCV valve)... the PCV breather valve is up at the intake hose between the MAF & the turbo. It is round and has a flat top. There're several check valves that control PCV flow... so I can't say which is THE pcv valve. LOL

Any idea what could cause it to be going on and off so infrequently?

The fault code will tell you... could be a number of things. Why guess when you can scan it and read the code. Even if the light is off, there might be a code in memory. If the light is off for the inspection, it might pass. If the light comes on before the inspection, read the fault code and let me know what it is... then I can help.

I'm getting low MAF readings even after cleaning it, and low boost. I've replaced SJP, the 3-way check valve next to it, DV, lots of hoses under the manifold, and made sure my N80 is working along with a new check valve after it. Cold start is a bit rough but, no high idle. Also I can feel blow by pulsating out of the oil fill hole when I remove the cap during idle, and I hear a quiet hissing sound under the intake manifold which I can't track. Do you know if it is PCV, PRV, or maybe a leak somewhere else? Been trying to track down this problem for months and it's really bothering me. Thanks
@EXOVCDS

Normal oil filler cap dance at idle: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/ Smoke test the engine for leaks... if you can't see the leak, smoke might help find the leak / the source. Depending on engine & ambient temperature, it is normal for the PCV system to smoke... when removing the oil filler cap or dipstick tube. If it smokes as soon as the engine is started (cold or warm), then you might have piston ring problems (compression blowby). Does the oil filler cap dance when you leave it loose? instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/ Press the play button.

Hello Thomas quick question why or how would coolant be getting in the intake threw intercooler on a 1.8t jetta im loosing coolant every few days i have to put coolant in the bottle and engine stumbles from coolant thanks
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
You verified that coolant is in the intercooler? The turbo is oil & water cooled... it could be that the turbo is leaking coolant into the intake. I have not seen this happen before. Are you sure that there are no external leaks? Coolant flange at the side of the cylinder head is a common leak source... as is the water pump, radiator and heater core flanges.

@@EXOVCDS I took the hose off the throttle body and it was wet with coolant not alot but had a film of coolant. Im going to check the the intercooler after work today and see if it has coolant in it im 90% sure i dont have an external leak theirs no visible leak that i see. I did a compression test all 4 are 120 not great but the same. Its weird once car cools down i take the cap off the coolant ball its like theirs vacuum because the coolant comes rushing back in is that normal? Thanks for your help i really appreciate it

Shaking as in running rough? Is the check engine light flashing? If it is, then the engine is misfiring... and that could be due to PCV components that are bad / broken. Open the hood and listen to the engine... listen for hissing sounds (air leaks). If the engine is not misfiring, it might me shaking due to bad engine / transmission mounts. Which engine? 1.8T? Check for fault codes (even if the check engine light is not on) and also check "fuel trim" values (if the scan tool is able to read them).

May i ask a question? I have the same engine and i have a fault code P1176. Is that hoses the reason to showe this fault code? Thank you
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 2 жыл бұрын
Broken PCV hoses usually set a different code... I can recall ever running into P1176. Code info can be found here: wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17584/P1176/004470 Checking PCV components would still be part of "checking intake system for leaks'. Also check the exhaust for leaks (ahead of the rear O2). If your scan tool can view "fuel trim" values... check those, as they can point to a leak before or after the throttle body. MAF sensor, cleanliness of throttle body bore, coolant temperature sensor and even correct thermostat operation can play a role In fuel metering / O2 sensor operation. Unfortunately there's never just one cause for a specific code... well, some codes have specific causes.

You can eliminate the PCV... but you have to keep it open at the engine with a small air filter, so that the crankcase can breathe (not build up pressure, which causes oil leaks). Google Search "1.8T PCV delete".

Thomas EXOVCDS Enjoy your videos and subscribed. I wonder if you could help me where to start with my jerky 1.8t AUM Golf/Rabbit 2002 model. It jerks from cold at low revs (under 1500 rpm) like a mild kangarooing. You can feel the power almost doing a little surge and then cutting out. It's pretty much ok once warm. Is this likely to be a vacuum leak? If I drive fast the power and boost seem fine. I've cleaned MAF, renewed N75 valve, new diverter valve, cleaned throttle body but only allowed car to reset that by waiting to start the engine with ignition on for a minute. Where should I check/renew next? Pcv hoses, pcv valve or throttle body alignment? Something else? Thanks for any advice!

Bro these cars have fixed alternator pulleys, not freewheeling ones, and that doesnt mean they are bad.. The car still runs smooth, as it is supposed to. The freewheeling alternator pulley can reduce vibrations when a heavy mass alternator is installed. These are fixed from the factory.

Performance loss how? Just lack of power or is clutch slipping? wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Fuel_Trim_Info Are all the splash guards in place in the intake camshaft? How many km's? As engines get old, they will have more blowby gasses in the crankcase... when then goes through the PCV system. Check for excessive oil at the base of the intercooler at every oil change. Check the turbo shaft for excessive freeplay. Check engine compression & leakdown and the spark plugs (to see if all cylinders behave the same). How much oil do you have to add at every 1600Km? "I think" VW says 1/5L for every 1600km is ok.

The generic vacuum hoses? You can get generic vacuum hoses at any auto parts store. You can buy them in various sizes (inside diameter) and length.

@@EXOVCDS Appreciate the quick reply! I'm looking at doing a lot of preventative maintenance and I'm trying to learn more about the different systems specifically on my 1.8t. These videos help a lot. Would the PCV system have anything to do with a boost leak? (probably a dumb question)
@EXOVCDS

Not a dumb question. A bad PCV one-way check valve will set boost / pressure drop codes.

Depends on what you need... if all the PCV hoses & plastic tubes are soft, cracked, broken, then replace everything. If only the check valve is bad, replace the check valve. It's a good idea to replace as much as you can, so you don't have to go back in there at a later time. Replace every 5 to 8 years... depending on driving habits.

Order according to your engine code / vehicle vin... or talk to someone at a VW parts store ECSTuning, Germanautoparts, VW Dealer... so that they can match things up correctly.

As usual awesome job teaching us how to do these repairs! Can just those components be the culprits of bad burnt oil smell inside the cabin? Or there’s something else that could cause that terrible odor. (Assuming no leak over the exhaust) Thank you!!
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 жыл бұрын
If you don't have oil leaking on to the exhaust, then the only place "oil smell" could come from, is from the pcv fumes. A good sniff around the engine bay while the engine is running, should result in finding the cause. Pcv fumes will also cause smoking... an aid in finding the source.
@GiorgioJeep05

@@EXOVCDS thanks for taking the time to answer my question!! Awesome! The funny thing is that it smells (pretty bad) only while driving (fast) over 80-100km/h. I have just completed the procedure you described in this video, if the smell has gone away by just replacing these plastic stuffs, I'm going to be extra happy... Otherwise I'm thinking it could be the turbo.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 жыл бұрын
Higher speed / air flow through the radiator can push PCV fumes in the engine bay towards / into the fresh air intake... otherwise, if oil is forced out because of higher speeds (engine) from some place... once you smell it inside the car, pull over and have a quick look under the hood.

What up og would a clogged pcv system cause a oil leak and that last piece u took out mines is completely broke in half thanks for the great vids u do a good job
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, if the PCV system / fumes are not vented (into the intake system)... pressure in the crankcase / oil pan will increase and oil leaks can develop. It's a good idea to check / replace all those plastic PCV components every 5 years or so... or replace broken plastic pieces as soon as you spot them.

Remove the valve and then try to blow through it. Little air pressure should pass in both directions... when you use lots of air pressure, then the valve should BLOCK air flow.

I was having performance issues..with my car that is...lol..I'd change the oil and it would get dirty very quickly and i had to put a quart in after a few weeks..(no oil was burning out of the tail pipe either.Anyways I bought the tubing and a PCV from 034 motorsports..it cost 30 bucks for that pcv but it's made of Billit aluminum,unlike those plastic pieces of shit you buy at napa...after changing that my car runs like a Champ.Oil stays cleaner.Better gas mileage.It made an amazing Difference.So yeah you guys with this engine after about a 100k miles need to change this or you could ruin your engine.
