"carefully with the check valves they like to break" that's an understatement,😂 I had a customer like that today, on a town and country van, OE cooling elbow with pipes /hoses were 280, he preferred to use cheapie aftermarket elbows that may last a year, he had 2 aftermarket installed already in 2 years hard to get him to step up and fix it right, but he finally did

There are many guys like myself... you just have to give people a chance. One shop visit (that most people do) can not provide an accurate reflection of shop service. People also don't give shops a chance to correct things when people think that work was not done correctly. Rather than going back to give the shop a chance to correct things, people move on to the next shop.

Thomas EXOVCDS I think it’s because there are many bad and untrustworthy auto mechanics out there and so many customers have trust issues. My dad has been tricked numerous times. On one occasion my dad got his break pads replaced only to go to a mechanic for another issue and having been told his break pads needed to be replaced. As soon he got it replaced again, he’s been having consistent break pad issues ever since. Mind you, he went to a private shop. Private shops are a lot more tricky.

Hey thomas - to get some more movement on the metal lines - you can undo the 2 bolts at the front below the intake that the vacuum plumbing and solenoid valves are attached to. There's also 2 bolts at the back (follow the metal lines to the bracket they're bolted to). This will allow you to pull the lines to almost clear the bottom stud. I know this as I had to do this to be able to remove 2 of the bolts for my air kombi valve. An easier alternative though... is cut that useless tab off ! It's over engineered as the metal lines are still supported at either end. I believe this is a leftover design from the older engines which used a bolt instead of a stud and nut fitting. I bet the stud could be removed and reinstalled too using the double nut trick that Eric the car guy has shown!

Very well done as usual, Thomas. Have an 2004 Audi A4 at work right now with a coolant leak at the rear that drips off of the turbo oil line and then to a bell housing bolt. Not able to see where it's coming from so tomorrow I will remove some hoses and crap. Maybe I will find it.

same flange location (will look different)... remove the Sec air combi valve for more access. Make sure that the heater hose clicks back into the flange correctly... or it will pop off a day or so later. have fun! :-)

I see what you mean. Some of the hose kits that I was looking at seemed to have some of what I need, but I wasn't sure. As for the aluminum flange and upper and lower hoses would I have to cut into them to replace the plastic parts like the y pipe and other coupling on the upper hose? Sorry about all the questions, and I really appreciate your advice and time. Too many people out there giving a million different views, makes it difficult to really trust someone. Most of the hoses that have plastic parts on them should be clamped to the hoses / should be able to swap them over.

Laurens Ketting They tend to have a very small filter area, and many have small orifices that can restrict the flow of oil enough to cause damage to some valvetrains. There's a great article here comparing the different brands of filters. Hey Thomas. Been busy lately. Hope your doing well. As always I learn a lot from you . Been behind on my chores and the honey do list is getting long again. My 03 1.8t Jetta 5spd is needing some coolant hose replacement. Was wondering maybe silicone hoses? The thing is they don't seem to come with any of the bypasses and couplings. Aluminum flanges is the way to go... silicone hose kits should be available for the 1.8T, but most likely, not all hoses are available in silicone. I'd just replace hoses as need be (leaking, swollen, cracking etc).

+Thomas EXOVCDS I need your help urgently. I've never been so frustrated working on a car. I have a 2002 VW Jetta. The radiator was leaking coolant and the temperature gage was going crazy... I replaced the Radiator and Coolant Sensor. I plan on burping the car soon but the problem is it won't start anymore after it overheated (I shut it off automatically). The car won't turn on anymore and when I use my scanner it reads "P0342 Camshaft position low". I'll replace the camshaft tomorrow but if that doesn't work and the car won't turn on, I don't know what else to do. I'm growing frustrated. Please help.

***** 2.0L 4cyl. I crank it and it doesn't turn on. It just makes the normal crank noise. The battery is good, the fuel injectors work etc.

Opinion. If the engine stopped running by itself, it could be that the timing belt jumped.... because the camshaft was seizing up. The camshaft position sensor is not needed to make the car run... so don't bother replacing the sensor. Remove the top timing belt cover and check if the camshaft sprocket is turning when someone is cranking the engine with the key. If the sprocket & belt are moving, you need to check if the camshaft & crankshaft line-up when the engine is at #1 TDC. If the belt jumped, then the camshaft & crankshaft are "out of time" and that is the reason why the engine does not start.

Aylon Pinzon I'm not sure what you mean by coolant seals being bad for cars... if you meant additives that stop leaks, then yes, I do not recommend using stop leak additives.

If you have a coolant leak... fix the leak. Once the leak is fixed and the system is full, run the engine to bleed any remaining air out of the system. Monitor heat inside the car and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Make sure that the thermostat is opening by monitoring the temperature of the lower radiator hose. Monitor coolant flow back into the coolant reservoir... this can confirm coolant pump operation, but watch this video first, so that you know why there sometimes is no return flow: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6OvgpWJo8eCfJY If you have video or pictures of engine bay coolant leaks... send them to me so that I can see what you see. Not sure what the boss charged. Maybe 1 to 1.5hrs labor (removal & installation, bleeding of system & verifying thermostat & fan operation) + parts (flange kit & coolant).. depending on labor rate / your location, could range from $100 to $200 maybe?.

Leak on the passenger side is usually due to a leaking water pump. Look for fluid dripping from behind the crankshaft pulley / serpentine belt pulley.

Hi, my audi a3 2.0 2005 is loosing coolant. Cant see any leaking, no white smoke while running engine in optimal temp. Cant see any foam in oil cap. There is pressure when i remove the coolant tank cap?

VandalsART Pressure when the coolant is cold? Pressure when cold (the next morning) is bad... head gasket is forcing air into the cooling system. It's normal to have pressure when the coolant is warm. Most likely it's an external leak... you just have to find it. Water pump, radiator, coolant flange, hose, heater core etc.

Most likely from the plastic coolant flange, similar to this video. Follow the leak to its source. After you fix the leak.. check correct operation of the water pump, thermostat and cooling fans. Whatever is leaking is either leaking due to old age, or because it got stressed by a failed component (water pump, thermostat, cooling fans).

Hi Thomas, I have an 08 Passat 2.0 tdi (125). I noticed my car has began to leak small drops from the back of the engine onto the rhs drive shaft. Culprit of the leak is really hard to see, as the driveshaft has left a fairly messy trace of coolant splatter.. Can you help steer me in the right direction please? Many thanks!

Could be from a coolant hose that has gone soft from oil contamination. The best thing to do is to get under the vehicle and to have a look / follow the trail of coolant to the source. **** Be sure to raise / lift the vehicle safely, so that you can be under the vehicle without worry!!! Use jack stands to keep the vehicle raised, don't rely on just the floor jack or car scissor jack!!! ****

I have a question for you. I have a VW New Beetle 1.8 Turbo Charged which has a coolant leak coming from the passenger side. There isn't any puddles of wet fluids on top near the reservoir. All the coolant drops straight to the ground out through the passenger side. What would be your guess on where the leak is coming from?

Sick of my Jetta leaking coolant, basically had the whole system replaced including radiator. Guess i'll check the reservoir next :-/

A4 platform is up to 20 years old... things don't get better with age. The "weak link" always leaks first. If you have an overpressurizing issue, it can be an ongoing issue until no more weak links are present. The reservoir cap is supposed to "vent" excess pressure to protect the system. If no excessive pressure is present, then things are leaking due to old age / wear (plastic parts... got to love them).

Then it's going through the engine and out the exhaust.... but you better make sure that is the problem, since that's a lot of work if you are wrong. 95% of the time, coolant loss is due to an external leak.

Usual suspect... thermostat housing / coolant flange under the ignition coil, crack pipe from thermostat housing to water pump, electric water pump next to the ignition coil, radiator. Hey Thomas , I'm trying to bleed my coolant system after I replaced the thermo and water pump but I notice that the hose that's on top of the reservoir doesn't bleed out water when I rev my engine and when I blow on it it doesn't come back to the reservoir do you think it might be clog? And would that cause overheat on my 1.8t?

Jetta, Golf, Passat or Audi A4? The Passat & Audi A4 can be a bit more tricky to bleed and the fluid return into the reservoir will not be as obvious as with the Jetta or Golf. If you can blow air into the hose (no restriction), then you might still have an air pocket in the block. You should be able to tell if the hose is plugged (cheeks full of air do not deflate)... in which case, follow the hose and look for a restriction / plugged junction. To further bleed, you can open the system at various other places (remove a temperature sensor or disconnect / lift the end of a hose) until fluid comes out. Let the engine cool off after each time it gets too hot... rather than trying to burp the system while it is in the hot zone.

Hello. I have a 2002 jetta 1.8t and I just replaced all the coolant pieces with the aluminum upgrade kit as well as a new surge tank and it seems like every day or every other day I have to top the whole surge take off. I can’t see any leaks I’m not sure if it’s leaking or what. Thanks in advance

You might have air in the system that is working itself into the bottle... if that is the case, the fluid level will eventually stabilize. If you continue to get air in the system, you might have a head gasket issue. Any major overheating in the past?

Just recently got the vehicle, I didn’t have any issues before replacing anything other then an open thermostat that’s why I changed out and upgraded to aluminum housing. The previous owner said he hasn’t had any issues with overheating and I haven’t had any issues either. Is there a good way to burp these vw systems?

If you didn't have any issues before and you are sure that there are no leaks, then you probably just need to bleed it more. Make sure that the small coolant return hose actually flows coolant back into the reservoir when the engine is running. After replacing the thermostat, there's usually air in the radiator that then enters the engine once the thermostat opens, causing the fluid level to drop. Again, as long as the return hose flows coolant back into the reservoir... air can escape with it. If the hose does not flow coolant, check for a restriction. You can bleed air out of the system by disconnecting / lifting various hoses to check for air / coolant. If you lift a hose and coolant escapes, then check at other locations.

I paid 560.00 at Midas repair shop for a radiator leak, 1 month and a half the leak is back and worse than before and they now want 800.00 to repair the same leak. It should have lasted a while I had the problem before. Why is there an additional charge?

I can't comment on that... if it is the same leak / area they worked on, then there should be some kind of warranty (I would think). If the leak is caused by an underlying issue, that issue needs to be addressed... and could be the additional charge. The underlying issue might not have been noticed the first time around.

What size engine (so that I can get an idea of where the plugs are and if it might be possible to replace while the engine is in the car). Most likely (depending on which plug) it can be done in the car... as I have installed "block heaters" on engines that were in the vehicle. I used to pop out the freeze plug and then install the block heater.

I don't know what an evac line is, sorry. If your coolant level is not staying level (have to top up coolant now & then), then yes, you have a leak. A good visual inspection should find the source / location of the leak. Don't forget to check inside the car (heater core).

How did U know it was the plastic pipe and not the rubber hoses?Is it the plastic pipes that leak due to cracks rather than the hoses,most of the time?

Did you watch the whole video? I pressure tested the cooling system and used a mirror to locate the leak. I could see coolant coming out of the flange. Once the flange was removed, I could inspect it close up and verify that a Crack was present. Flanges are usually the main cause of leaks... hoses also fail, but due to swelling from oil contamination.

A bit of close inspection (before removal) should allow you to see where the coolant is coming from. If the whole area is wet... use brake parts cleaner to clean / dry the area... then look for new / fresh moisture.

Disconnect / drain at one of the oil cooler hoses... that should be enough. Replace the plange and then fill the system. Make sure that coolant "flows / returns" back into the coolant reservoir bottle when the engine is running. if not, the engine will overheat... due to an air pocket in the engine / cooling system.

The A4 platform is the generation... 4th generation Golf or Jetta. The Audi A4 is a model... b5 b6 b7 etc being the generation. I don't make the rules / names... I just use them.

It takes about 2-3 days of moderate driving to run the coolant reservoir liquid down to the bottom of the tank. Not too too bad, but I took it to get checked over at a local mechanic shop, they estimated $620 for the part replacement + labor work. According to them, it's the water pump that needs to be replaced. I haven't agreed to the repair yet, trying to see if my car warranty covers the cost for this part first.

on my 2014 vw jetta 1.8t automatic when cold the coolant level is just above the minimum line. however when I've been driving for awhile the coolant level goes well below the minimum line . is this correct or do I have an issue???

As long as the level comes back up once cold... should be OK. The fact that it is low to begin with, needs to be investigated though. Possible slow leak somewhere?

Thomas EXOVCDS well i have a small leak on my oil cooler and it's slowly making a mess around the DANA oiler cooler which makes want to change that gasket. but when the coolant is cold the plastic bottle fills back up to full. but driving for a whole the fluid goes well below the minimum line like almost empty level but you can still see fluid in the bottle.

The system is under pressure... as the engine coolant warms up, the air that is in the reservoir is also heated and that is pushing down on the fluid. Ideally the fluid level should not change from cold to warm... should be less sensitive to change when the level is higher to the max mark (when cold). Top-up the coolant and check what happens.

Or drive it until the coolant level is low and then stop wait for a bit then tske the cap off and then fill it while the level is low and not wait until it's fully cold?? because when it's fully cold that's when all the fluid comes back to half full. my worry is the fluid filling the entire bottle. if so is that bad?

Fill to max line when cold... that leaves half the bottle empty still. Put the cap on and see what happens.

Hello, I just flushed and changed the coolant on our 2.0L turbo. Coolant level seems to go down about a 1/2” ofter a 30 minute drive. No leaks noted prior. How long should the burping process take to get all of the air out if any? Thank You

When mostly bled, it usually only needs to be topped up once... if the system wasn't bled well, it might take 2 to 3 top ups.

One of the reasons I changed the anti-freeze was it was off the scale. Meaning I like 50/50 at -34, but this was way off. Maybe it was at a 70/30 mix. This car takes a long time to heat up. Brrrrrr Will Do, Thank You again :)

@@mikef6706 Gasoline engines, especially ones with turbo, should warm up fairly quickly. Did you check / change your thermostat as well? That would be on my suspect list for long warm up.

90% of coolant leaks you do not need a pressure tester for. A simple visual inspection should find trails / signs of coolant leaking. If head gasket is suspected... check / compare the spark plugs. Coolant flange at the back of the head... here's a 1.8T VW Golf with a similar leak at the flange: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYeoe2WMrK2HasU Your flange will not be as easy to access... remove what you have to, to get at & remove the flange. Also check the heater hose that attaches to it and the coolant temperature sensor / o-ring. Use a telescoping mirror & flash light to see where the leak is coming from... before you start taking things apart.

Original parts... it's to be expected on a lot of cars when they get old. These A4's / mk4's are 12 to 17 years old. I think they held up well for the most part.

It's a coolant flange. Most engines have more than one flange. What year, make, model & engine is your car? Where is your leak? It might only be a bad o-ring for the coolant temperature sensor. Don't buy any parts until you know what you need. If the engine is overheating, the new part will mot last long. Most parts have part numbers listed / printed on them. If you already removed the part, look for the part number.

If it's coolant that is leaking out, it might be getting on the exhaust and steaming. If it only steams after the engine is warm, it might still be coolant, not leaking on to the exhaust and steaming because it is hot. You should be able to trace both coolant leaks & oil leaks down with a simple visual inspection. I can't do that from where I am... once you know where the leaks are, let me know and I might be able to suggest what to do. If oil is everywhere, degrease the engine / area with engine degreaser. Once everything is clean, start the engine and look for fresh leaks (oil / coolant). You might have to drive the car for a bit, before oil leaks surface... depending on how severe the oil leak(s) is.

Follow the smell to the leak or follow the trail of coolant to the leak. Check engine light can be on for a number of reasons... if you had said that the engine overheated, then I would think that they are related (coolant leak = smell, to hot = check engine light). @@jenabell2429 there's not much room or visibility on the 2.0l common rail TDI, which can make it difficult to find leaks. Do you know if the leak came first or the overheating? These engines don't have any known issues that i am aware of... but age will always be a factor. If you can raise the car and remove the bottom splash guard, you'll be able to see better which side of the engine / vehicle the leak is at. Belt side or transmission side.
