Nice diag and repair, Thomas. I blew an engine on a road test in a customers car many years ago and it caught fire to boot. A passer bye had a fire extinguisher in their trunk and took care of the fire. A lesson well learned. Insurance paid for half. My ass was sore for quite a while from the reaming I took from the boss.

+wysetech2000 I blew an ALH TDI engine back in 2010... it ingested pcv oil that was collecting in the intercooler. It was gonna happen to the customer if not me... customer agreed it was better to have happened on my test drive. I don't push old cars too hard anymore.

Check for vacuum leaks (before & after throttle body). If your code is lean at "part throttle", look for the leak after the MAF and before the throttle body. Smoke checking is the best way to find leaks.

I failed to mention (in the video) that the first thing I did was smoke test the intake system "before" & "after" the throttle body (before going on a test drive)... to check for any air leaks that could affect the MAF. No leaks were found. Power & grounds at the MAF should have probably been done... but if "THAT" had been an issue, then the NEW MAF would also behave the same way as the "bad" MAF.

+STEVE ROB The short term (if that is what you were referring to) was still relearning during my short test drive.... given more time, it would have settled down nicely. Pushing these old cars hard is scary... so I don't do it unless needed. We had someone complain ( an ignition coil hit the bucket during a test drive of mine) they said they are not paying for it, as it was ok when they dropped the car off. We had a used coil , so we put that in... was a used coil that failed, so that was fine with me. :)

Nice work Thomas...you're the best at fixing VW cars...i have a question...i own a vw polo from 2001 with 1.4 mpi engine..in the morning and during the day(usually after the car sits for more than 5 hours) when i start the engine and let it idle it works fine, starts right up...but when i start to drive it feels like the engine wants to die..if i immediately press the clutch and give it some gas the car works ok again..what can the problem be regarding the fact that it only does this when it's cold.. I have no DTC's...maybe sometimes a B1 S2 error(after catalyst)..but nothing else...thanks a lot

The ecm performs basic setting of throttle every time the ignition is cycled on or off. If there is a fault, the ecm will set a fault code. No fault code, everything is ok. The throttle will be slightly open when ignition is on. Throttle pedal value should be 0 when not pressed.

I've try to turn the sensor on the pedal but it stay at 4.7% (btw it say 4.7 but it's more like -4.7 because when I press slowly, I slowly go back to zéro before going up 0.78-1.5-1.8%), by messing with the throttle body I eliminated the problem but I don't even know how. Before, like in roundabout, with little gaz, the engine cuted the power at very low charge.

+vwivancc VW & Audi don't provide all the specific locations of data groups or values for checking specific items. Ross-Tech does a good job at finding the information and labeling it when they have the info. You just go through data blocks 000 to 255 and see what you can find in your car. Some fields will have no data, some will, some data will be labeled, some won't. Do the same thing when going through "basic settings or adaptations"... some vehicles will have drop-down menus where you can choose from a list of items, others, you will have to enter the data group number that you used when viewing regular measuring blocks. forums.ross-tech.com/ is the best place to find / get information. I use VCDS every day, but I am not an expert / power used, as I just need to use the basics. If you need to run "readiness" (to check all the monitors)... VCDS usually provides a step by step procedure. Click on readiness and then click set readiness and follow the instructions.

@EXOVCDS

If the MAF is at fault (faulty input to the ECM), disconnecting the sensor will cause the ECM to run with a substituted value... if it runs better, it could be a bad maf. Checking the PCV system / one way check valve and EVAP system is also a good idea.

Hey Thomas, I have a '04 A4 1.8T with similar symptoms, P0171 code. Block 032 shows near zero additive trim (-1.5%) and high partial trim (+20~%). I've checked the MAF readings, they are in spec (0.8*crank HP). Looked for any leaks that might result in false air. I've also checked the fuel pressures at idle and under load, also in spec. Replaced the front O2 as well. Going crazy trying to find the cause for this code, any suggestions?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
Can you narrow down if the +20% is during low boost or higher boost demands? Is the ECM tuned / chipped? Exhaust? My first suggestion would have been MAF... could still be. It could be find under heavy load, but be off at cruising / moderate load. Watch short term closely while driving, right after clearing codes to see when exactly it is adding 20%+.
@logmegadeth72
@logmegadeth72 5 жыл бұрын
@@EXOVCDS It seems like it's during low boost demands/cruising. I've watched the LTFT slowly creep up on my way to work. So intake will be under vacuum most of the time (maybe there is unmetered air getting in somewhere). The ECU is tuned, APR Stage 1+ w/ TT225 injectors. 034 High Flow Cat as well. I've checked the MAF a few times, it always gives a max of 160g/s after a pull to redline in 3rd. Which is slightly low according to APR spec of 235 crank hp (235*0.8=188). But I have records of previous logs before this lean issue that showed similar results.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 5 жыл бұрын
Whenever a tuned ECM is involved, I always recommend going to have it checked by the tuner / dyno run. When you are checking MAF at full pull, it just loads at full pull... cruising MAF readings could still be offset (unless there is an air leak that's getting in... would have to be after maf but before throttle).

@@EXOVCDS It's hard to say exactly. I've cleared the codes and watched the short trim add fuel (around +7-8%) during low boost demands. @EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 6 жыл бұрын
Misfires are the cause of something being out of spec (fuel trim or ignition components). If the engine only misfires under moderate to heavy load... check if the rear O2 sensor shows a RICH signal when at wide open throttle (3rd gear floor it). If the rear O2 stays below 0.5mV, then the engine is running lean and that is causing misfires. Also try to get to WOT at a gradual pace (traffic / road conditions permitting)... if you can get to WOT without misfires and the rear O2 goes rich (0.8mV), then there is NO fueling issue. If you suspect ignition components, replace the spark plugs & coils / plug wires.

Thomas EXOVCDS so if I hit wot and rear o2 read rich than most likely ignition is my issue?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 6 жыл бұрын
Yes... at least that is what I would do / check. No need to "redline" the rpm to the rev limiter!!! Do not over rev the engine / blow it up!!! Play at own risk!!! =)

Hello Thomas! I have a check engine light with the code 16555 Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Lean. The code comes back after some hours when i erase it. The car is a 2005 golf mk5 1.6 with the BGU engine. My lambda mixture adaptation at idle is 1.6% and partial is 9.8%. When i do a full throttle test run my lambda control goes to 25%. I would say the maf is broken, but my car dont seem to have a maf. I look between the air intake and throttlebody and there is no sensor or electrical connectors. I have tries to search for answers but i think i might need your input on this one. Best regards Daniel.

How many kilometers / miles on the engine? Could be a fuel pump issue... maybe. We don't have the BGU engine is Canada, but it looks similar to the 2L ABA.

@@EXOVCDS It is just about to tick over to 200000km or 124274miles. How does my car get an airflow reading without a maf sensor? I can open mass airflow g70 in VCDS and get a reading while i drive. Do you have any tips on what tests i should do to try to find my problem, i have access to VCDS. Thank you for your answers, your videos have helped me with many problems with my VAG cars through the years. Best regards Daniel from Sweden

@@daniell7694 If your engine doesn't have a MAF sensor, it most likely has a MAP sensor that measures intake manifold pressure... to calculate air volume into the engine. Let me find some information on your engine and I will get back to you this weekend. Send me a message on saturday (to remind me) if you have not heard back from me by then.

hey man, what should my Maf reading be at full throttle for a 07 gli fsi (stage 2 tune) ? My fuel trim is like at -25 and have replaced the hpfp with no success. i'm think maybe a bad maf. ( this only happened right after i installed the tuned ecu)
@EXOVCDS

You aren't getting enough air to meet the fuel... or too much fuel for the air. Is boost where it should be? .8 x HP for a rough MAF value.
@jose15238
@jose15238 8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas EXOVCDS i think the car goes into like a limp mode, if i erase the codes the car will drive fine for like 3 minutes (fuel trim at like -1.1) bu then it jumps to -25. and boost dies. the only code i got was for the n276 valve on the hpfp but i replaced it with a new one but problem is still there.

How long do you "wait for parts" usually?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 8 жыл бұрын
+kfrdubber We don't keep a lot of stock in house... so while I wait, I work on different cars. Deliveries (depending on the company we ordered from) get shipped every 1 & 1/2 to 2 & 1/2 hrs. Or 3 runs to 6 runs per day. We have 3 main suppliers... so that usually gives us a wait time of 1 hr depending on when the part was ordered.
