This is exactly how an instructional video should be - thank you. I think this is the first repair I have ever done that went back together with more ease than it came apart. A little hint for anyone else doing it on their own - getting the door catch cable back in place can be tricky. I tied a slip knot to it and threaded the string through the door catch aperture and taped it to the outside of the door. Once the interior panel was back in situ I used the string to locate the cable into its position properly before cutting it off.

Simon...I've been wrenching on cars for 45+ years and I have come across a thousand tips and tricks during that time. At first I didn't understand your tip about tying a string to the latch cable. I told myself that when the time comes to do this repair, I'll figure out then what you were talking about. I swapped out the driver's side module last night using Thomas's video as a guide and I saw straight away what you were talking about. Out of the thousand tips and tricks that I've accumulated over the years, this one is in my top five. I just want to make sure I give credit where (and when) credit is due.

Thanks Thomas. Great video...awesome work. I did this repair last night in about 45 minutes. Simon Gore's tip about tying a string to the latch cable was brilliant. For those of you coming across this video for the first time, do yourself a big favor and buy a VW module. Yeah, yeah it's more money, but it will be money well spent.

This video helped a lot. Just completed the procedure. Useful tip; make sure to put sealant around the lower half of the inner (metal) door panel. Mine was leaking after the first time I went in to fix the stupid window mechanism. I hope I never have to spend anymore time in there! Thanks for the help.

Thank goodness for your video! The door lock rod popped off while changing the window regulator. I would probably still be out there figuring it out. The driver used to remove the 2 bolts is also the same used to remove the axle bolts on the back of an old beetle. Anyway, thanks again!!

OMG, you are a saint dude. Drivers door fixed finally. Though my dome lights still won't turn off after I lock the doors with the remote and set alarm. Somebody really f-ed this car up before I bought it. Also lost power to aftermarket stereo that was installed after replacing the Lock Module......

My son and I worked on this most of the day. Followed the steps given here that were helpful, but left gaps when you run into trouble. Like the arm that pops into the inner support was cracked. We just left it off. No pop rivet needed. Then the unit would not seat properly with the outside lock cylinder. We removed it and mounted the new latch. When putting the cylinder back in, the stupid Ring that locks the cylinder back down decided to come off and fall to the bottom of the door. Now the bottom of the door is like something designed from hell. It took me with a tripod with a led light taped to it's camera mount and a hand held mirror and a coat hanger to fish this ring out!! It took over one hour to accomplish this!! this door is the most over engineered piece of work I have ever worked on!! My old 1971 Type three is much easier to work on and replace parts off of!!

The same job can often not go the same way each time... there is always a possibility for things to go wrong or not as planned. I too have had the ring fall down into the door. Quickest thing to do is to just take the regulator panel off again. I have other videos that are more current that might have better viewing angles / coverage. '70s technology isn't quite the same to compare. The model T Ford would have been easier to work on than the Bug... it's common sense that newer cars will be more complicated. One thing none of these pieces has mentioned, is how to put the door handle back on, if you removed it. I had a problem with this. There is a spring-loaded flap behind the handle that must be engaged to return the handle when it is released. To engage it, you must pull the handle as far as it will go toward the back of the door while you push the handle in, then push the handle forward to engage the flap. If you don't d this, the handle won't return to its flush position. I didn't do this, and sprung the flap so it wouldn't engage. Had to hook it with wire to pull it out, then engage it. Works fine now. Hope this description is clear.

Hey great video. I noticed you had a little trouble unplugging the puddle lamp. I found if you prise the lamp down out of the door panel before removing, the connector is really easy to get at.

Your video was a massive help thanks for taking time to post. I would have definitely broken my window without your tip to mark the window bolts. I've replaced both rear lock modules but never a front one. The rear ones are a pain with the plastic dowl window retainer. Tip for anyone doing a rear lock,, soak the plastic window retainer dowl in WD-40 its much easier to remove it then.

Until I get this fixed, the only way I can lock the car when I leave is to get out, close the front driver door, open the back passenger door and reach up to the front and manually push down the button. Then I close the back door.

@@EXOVCDS Okay I just checked it and it DOES lock and unlock using the key in the door. I still need to get this fixed but at least I don't have to open the back door each time. Can you give me an estimate on the parts and labor for the repair you did in this video? I'll go somewhere local (Raleigh/Durham, NC area) but I'm curious as to how much it will be. Thanks again.

@@EXOVCDS My 2003 Passat puddle light or dome light does not come on for the front passenger door AND car will lock with passenger door staying open past 30 seconds. Same deal inside the passenger door as in this video? Thanks for the reply.

Thomas, today I R&R'd the module after watching your video a few times and I now have a Passat that works as it should. The locks works as they should, the courtesy lights come on when opening the doors, and it will warn you if you have left the lights on when removing the key. Thank you for the video, I would not have been able to do that without it. I did have some trouble when pop riveting the plastic bracket onto the module, as I only had a few to choose from. It would be useful if you could include the size and type of rivet used. It deformed the plastic a bit, but was still somewhat secure. I didn't have an aluminum rivet the approximate diameter so I had to use a steel one which was probably the wrong type. Thank you again.

LeRay Hinchman Luster Bluster A Zip-Tie also works well... some people don't secure the latch back to the panel. Instead, they fasten the latch to the door first and then attach the panel to the door... never using the plastic bracket.

Hi Thomas. Nice work as always. As you may know, most of the door stuff I've worked on has been GM's and Fords where the window regulators are a breeze to change. I can remember the first time on that VR6 that when I pulled the driver door panel off, I said to myself, what a monstrosity of stuff in there and how in the world is all that stuff going to come out of there. I noticed that you reused the black pegs that were securing the door module bracket to the inner door panel. I always thought that you had to buy a new bracket which gave you the new pegs. Learn something all the time. Thanks Thomas for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I had a Jetta recently where the black plastic mounting piece was missing... the lock module can be installed without it, but the bracket helps with the installation / alignment. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get things back together... even if it doesn't look pretty. There are a lot of repairs that I don't film & post... too many questions would probably arise, which I don't have time for (at this stage of my KZbin career) while still having a day job.

Hi great vid just changed my drivers door window (uk) regulator panel out no problem but the latch pin/rod ( don't know the correct name for it ) fell off and l couldn't for the life if me guess how to re attach it to the lock mechanism? so left it off. Can see it in your vid but can't quite make out how its attached ? and can you put this rod back on without taking off the inner regulator panel? Thats my question Lol Thanks,

When removing the cable from the courtesy light at 5:31, I found I could just push the whole courtesy light assembly out of the bottom of the door, then the plug was easy to remove.

Thanks for the video. On my '05 Passat, the rear door locks (2) have to be opened and locked by hand, the remote fob has no effect. Are these independent, or are they operated by a central module, and if so, where is it located? Thanks.

In Canada / USA... if the vehicle is equipped with central locking, then all doors should work with the remote fob or the button inside the car (driver door). In some countries... only the front doors will work with central locking / remote fob and the rear doors are manual.

@@EXOVCDS you are correct, it is the 10mm torx screw. I have a small extractor set, but I don't have a 11 or 12 mm extractor. The 10mm extractor doesn't get around the circular flange and 13mm is too big. I am not sure if the extractor can grip the smooth circular flange though. Thoughts?

@@nforbes1991 In the video, I was dealing with 10mm hex head bolts... the Torx head bolts don't have a lit to bit into. I would drill into the torx head and then use a tapered images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/606c3051-346e-4a65-a3c4-fa3d5fbc6cba/svn/urrea-specialty-hand-tools-9500b-64_1000.jpg extractor to try and break the bolt loose (or drill the head right off and deal with the remaining pieces on a bench after removing the complete regulator panel).

Great video!! Quick question... 04 Passat B5: Driver door won't lock manually or with key fob. Also, door does not always shut, "bounces" back open. Try 10-20 times before it finally takes. Could these symptoms all point to problems with the door lock module?

+Dan Berding Yes, it could... it's a good place to start checking. With the door open, you should be able to close the locking latch with the tip of a screwdriver. If it does not stay latched, I would remove the lock module and try to latch it outside of the door. If it functions normally when not connected to the wiring harness, then something "electrically" is keeping it from latching (which shouldn't be the case, but you never know).

+Thomas EXOVCDS Thanks Thomas. Yes, no problem with physical latch, can easily shut with fingertip. The fact that it won't lock is puzzling. Cannot physically push it down. Will keep toying with it.

@@EXOVCDS ok - when i got the car the CCM was missing, it lets water into the footwells as does most Passats so i figure the CCM got damaged and removed. as a result of no CCM, there was no locks / windows / e.mirrors / int lights / boot release / fuel flap AND when opening the NSR door / boot / bonnet the alarm goes off.. fitting a CCM has obtained interior lights and fuel flap but windows and locks and boot release and e/mirrors are all still inop (the switches are dead, don't even light up). plugged into VCDS and can't communicate with the module. HELP it's driving me insane. P.S i recently replaced the battery due to cold weather killing the previous one, since that my trip computer resets everytime i leave the car for approx an hour, so can't monitor things like avg MPG (both displays show the same, 0.00 when started and they mirror eachother throughout.. the "overall" resets if that makes sense.

There's probably wiring damage / corrosion somewhere... if fuses (powers & grounds) are ok. A good wiring diagram, test light and some patience should help sort things out. The CCM also needs to have the correct coding to match the car. Incorrect coding does not prevent communication, so focus on powers & grounds and a good visual inspection.

The lock actuator is just an input/output for the driver door module (part of the window motor)... if the control switch in the driver door is OK, then yes, maybe the window motor / module is bad. Using a scan tool, you can check for fault codes in the central convenience module... as well as check if it receives signals from the driver control buttons.

At @16:17 you're drilling away something and later you're using a tool to re-fit it. Can this be done without special tools? My driver seat door is not locking with key fob press, only manually. all other doors work fine. THanks anyways for the tutorial :)!

You'll need a drill to remove the rivet. You can use a plastic zip tie instead of a rivet to hold things together when you are reassembling.

@@EXOVCDS The two bolts that hold the locking module was completetly eroded shut, couldnt for the life of me get them loose. So I did nothing further about the door issue. But now my door locking module is breaking down (car door not even locking when i turn the key manually) so I have to change it. Fuck.

@@mikal_1 if the key feels easy / loose to turn, then the actuator rod is broken. Remove the key cylinder and replace the rod / key cylinder kit.

I figured you would have an answer for me but.... I bought a MK4 Golf and have 2 keys that came with. One to open the door the other to start, open hatch. I was wonder if you knew where I can get tumblers to match the stock key so I only have to car one around? I just programed my remote with my VAG tool but would like to not have to carry 2 keys.

Most lock smith's (that also deal with car keys) will be able to code lock cylinders to match a key. If I recall correctly, the ignition cylinder can not be recoded. The driver door cylinder can be taken apart and coded. I have never had to take a trunk cylinder apart, but suspect that it can be coded as well.

+Thomas EXOVCDS As far as I know, the immobilizer in the car can't be recoded for a different, already programmed (IMMOBILIZER) key chip. But new immobilizer chips can be programmed as long as you have the cluster/ecu/immo SKC PIN code available. Aquiring that though, can ble quite a hassle. The FOB/Remote part of the keys, can be matched to the car with VCDS / VAG-COM and other tools - without the need for SKC PIN. If you ever need an automotive locksmith to program keys to the immobilizer (not a VAG workshop), they are likely going to have to extract this code. Ask that they note it down for you in case of future issues. snaremj: If you didn't have an automotive locksmith recode the lock to match the keyblade yet - and I understand correctly, that you matched the FOB of the "door-only-key" with the car... then I suggest you ask them to cut a new blade for that key (and program a new immobilizer chip if neccessary). Having only one working key is quite the risk.

Great video and very helpful. Thanks for posting. I now have the same problem with my old 02 Passat and grabbed a module from another car at a pick your part place. I would have liked to see how you got the module hooked back up to the door handle though. Also, did you not have to reconfigure the new module so that the remote keys would work?

The door lock module / actuator is just an output / input device. The Comfort Control Module is what operates the door locks / receives a signal from the remote or key on the door.

@@EXOVCDS Hmm, after further investigation: The passenger door inside lock/unlock button works fine. Also both the driver door inside lock/unlock button and the remote key can lock the doors but neither the remote key or the driver side lock/unlock button can unlock the doors. The remote key cannot lock the driver side door. The locking/unlocking sounds all work fine though.

@@EXOVCDS Oh, wow, now all of a sudden both the buttons and remote key works fine for locking/unlocking all doors. I guess the issue is intermittent. The driver side door still won't lock using the remote key but it will unlock. This issue was intermittent also for a while before it just stopped working.

Very nice... I need help with it: when I try to lock the car all doors locked except driver door who lock and unlock itself, only way to lock all 4 doors is first on remote lock then with key lock ??? Where can be the problem ?

Dejan Markovski Hi, Sorry about the late reply. You need to check all the door lock module signals with a scan tool. It could be a wiring issue, a solder joint issue or a microswitch issue. Has that door lock module / lock assembly been replaced?

The door lock actuator does not communicate with the key fob. The comfort control module communicates with the fob.

Hi boss, all of a sudden my doors stopped open and close with the key button and I can do it from the central door buttons and manually. Also, the windows don't open. Is it the same problem as in the video or its something else? Cheers

Awesome job, am having VK passa v6 2004 model. Since last few weeks driver door is too hard to lock and unlock and now its not even locking or unlocking. the key female part was strucked and key is not rotating to neither locking nor unlocking. Remove the key cylinder and try to lock & unlock with a screwdriver... similar to what I did in this video (Jetta): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJe3q6KomLylqtU If it does not work with a screwdriver, then the lock module might be bad. If the key turns the key cylinder while the key cylinder is out of the door, then the lock module was preventing the key from turning.

Ashok naidu bungatavula Did you already remove the cylinder and check with a screwdriver? Don't worry about the cost of the parts until you know which part you need. It might not even be one of those parts that is the problem.

You have to drill out the old rivet in order to move the bracket to the new lock module / actuator... so yes, a new rivet was installed. You can use a small zip-tie / tie-strap to hold the bracket to the lock module / actuator. Some people don't reuse the bracket... but I like to mount the assembly back against the regulator panel with the bracket.

Those are small "plastic wedges"... you can knock them out with a "pin punch" and a "hammer" (just like I did in the video). If you don't have the little plastic wedges, you can use a zip strap through the holes to hold the plastic bracket in place and then cover the strap with duct tape.

I purchased a new lock actuator (lock module as shown in this video). However after I hooked everything up the car won't start and the remote fob doesn't work. I am assuming programming shouldn't be necessary since the video doesn't mention that. I am wondering if the car anti-theft mechanism is active? When I put the key in the ignition and turn it there is no sound at all however headlights and other systems work fine. I tried to jump start it in case I ran the battery down while I was working on the car. The lock actuator that I purchased is a brand new VW part I bought from the parts dept today. When I use the key in the lock it does lock/unlock the car. I don't see the alarm on indicator light in the door. Ideas?

A faulty door lock actuator or the act of replacing one... can not / should not have anything to do with preventing the vehicle from starting / not cranking. If this is a B5 Passat, check the Comfort Control Module (under the driver carpet) for water damage... a wet / faulty CCM can cause starting / no crank issues. Do a full system scan (scan all the modules in the car) to see if there are any fault codes. If the car was running before the lock module re & re, then it should run now. I don't disconnect the car battery when replacing them... coding should not be needed either, since the "brains" is part of the power window motor (Door Control Module).

Thanks for the speedy reply. I was also thinking it should not have caused it. I did read somewhere else that someone mentioned they had a blown fuse after doing the work so I'll check that tomorrow. In the post I saw, they said that the lock worked but the fuse was blown causing the car not to start and some other things related to the lock. I'll check the fuse tomorrow. I'll update here either way but I am hoping it is something as simple as that.

Yeah, I couldn't wait anymore so I went out and checked fuse 6 and 14 and 14 was blown. I replaced it (10amp) and wouldn't know you it. Car starts, interior lights work and fob works! Thanks. Your video really helped me get this replaced. While the lock actuator wasn't cheap, I at least saved on labor.

My inside door handle keeps slipping (looses tension) when I try to open from inside (outside works fine). Works for few times then looses all tension again. This happened after I replaced window regulator. Is there way to anchor the inner door cable so it won't loose/stretch from opening door from inside? I was thinking of advancing inner door cable further behind regulator panel then taping it down?

The cable should sit / clip tight against the back of the release handle. If the retaining clips are broken, the cable will sleeve will pop out. Use a small tie strap to hold it against the back of the handle. Send me pictures so I can see the parts. fkh161 at fkh161 dot ca (my email).

Door lock actuators are common item to cause dome light issues. I'm at work... if you need wiring diagrams, I can look for one once I get home tonight.

It happened on my both driver and left rear door in different times. Passat 03. I used rublicator (DW40). I just applied down the bottom. It fix my problem

I changed my passat's driver's door today and now when trying to lock the door it automatically unlocks both left side doors. Do you think that also might be the problem with mechanism? Shall I just install the old one? used to be good

You changed the whole door? You need to check / compare the wires in the wiring harness that comes out of the door, to see if all the wires are the same & in the correct location. It could be that the door is from a Passat that has slightly different configurations.

@@EXOVCDS I changed the whole wires, put my old ones thats because one plug from under the hood openner was different, thats probably because i have all electric windows and the new doors were with only front ones. The thing is I cant even lock it manually. Will try to change the lock mechanism today as you did in this video. Awesome video by the way, never seen a better tutorial, honestly

The car doesn't like something that is in the door... the door module / window regulator module may need to be coded differently. Attach the old module and compare the "coding" of the module.

@@Edis1990 Yes, the motor can be removed from the regulator panel and the cable will / should stay in place. Remove the 3 torx bolts that secure the motor to the regulator panel and gently wiggle the motor off... then install the old motor.

Manual says to hook the spring on the latch lever... is that what you mean? If the outside door handle cable is attached too tight, then the latch might not unlock the next time the door is closed. Always try the handle & latch with the door open (latch the latch and pull on the inside & outside door handles to make sure that they open the latch).

Hey Thomas, I'm having a similar issue... 01 Jetta 1.8T. Currently my drivers door will not lock or unlock with the remote fob, only key. I also cannot control any unlocking/locking, window up:Down motion from the drivers control module, funny thing, there is a black connection underneath dead peddle, when I disconnected/connect it will allow me to roll up/down just the driver door window about 5x until it goes back to not working anymore... Could you possibly point me to a few things? Early symptoms include; When I would roll the window up/down during the summer sometimes the window on drivers side would quit for for a few mins. Thanks!! Please let me kno

Does the driver window roll down / up if you hold the key in the lock / unlock position of the outside door handle? The power window motor has a circuit board that is mounted to it... it is the brains of the window & door lock actuator. If you do not find any faulty wiring or switches, you might have a bad power window module. Disconnect the harness plug from the window motor and check for corroded pins / connections.

+Thomas EXOVCDS When I insert the key into the outside door handle to roll down/up the windows, it does not operate. When I lock/unlock the car with the key fob, it locks/unlocks all doors except for drivers, I have to insert key into driver's door and turn it clockwise (hold) to hold the door or else the lock pin will pop up to unlock again. Also a thing I discovered is when I disconnect the power black harness under the dead peddle, I can roll up/down windows BUT can't operate any other window in the car from the driver's side. Please help

enricoanton Door lock actuator / module is just an input / output device for the Door Lock Control Module (part of the power window motor). You can take a golf lock actuator and mount it in a jetta or Passat (I was told that they fit). Just make sure that the lock actuator has the same amount of pins in the harness plug connector as the original.

After numerous garages took off my drivers side front door to find a short(now fixed), now the door will not lock at all, could something have gotten loose or broken off?

projectsalvo123 Remove the door cylinder / plug and check if the release cable is attached to the door handle. If it is, it might just need repositioning. If it is not, attach it. If it is broken, replace it. If repositioning does not help, remove the lock module and check operation on a bench / out of the vehicle.

Also what about the drivers side front door not locking? when i try to push the lock down, there is a lot of resistance and will not go down unless i sit there and play with it.

projectsalvo123 Not sure... I use the scan tool to check the "status" of the doors. Door open / closed and locked & unlocked. If the scan data shows everything is ok, then I look for a mechanical fault. If the scan data shows something is not where it should be (door is open even though door is closed), then I look for an electrical or mechanical issue. 90% of the time, the lock module will be at fault and replacement is the quickest repair. If you google search vw door lock actuators / lock modules, you can find DIY write-ups that explain / show how to check / test & repair.

this should be about the same idea as the mk4 golf right ? my module sometimes thinks the door is opened​ or closed I can't lock it or the alarm goes off then sometimes it works normal locks after the 30 seconds then it acts up and alarm goes off again lmao.

The Passat was / is a "luxury car"... lots of people buy them once they are 5 or more years old (when they are cheaper to buy). Luxury cars are built different than lower class cars. VW keeps things similar in design between models... appearance may differ though. Knowing what one can own & maintain is always difficult. Luxury would suggests nothing should / could go wrong fro quite some time... but luxury also suggests more time & money when repairs surface. All manufacturers over engineer things these days... use too many electronic devices, too many plastic parts, require special tools etc etc. I drive a 28 year old car for a reason. =)

all doors lock and unlock apart from my drivers side door I turn the key and all unlocks except for the drivers door it tries to open but then my windows wind down and after 2 more attempts it finally opens. what do you think the problem might be. Most likely the door lock module itself. When you hold the key in the unlock for longer than 2 seconds, the courtesy feature rolls all windows down (this is normal... to vent out hot air on a hot day). Hold in the lock position and the windows go back up.This tells me that the micro switch is OK (recognizes that the key is in the unlock position), but the electric motor is not moving the unlock pin. The lock assembly / lock actuator is the issue. Replacing it should get things working again. To be sure, remove it and check it out of the vehicle... sometimes things just need a bit of lubricating to get things moving. Water intrusion can corrode the inside of the actuator assembly causing drag when the motor wants to turn.

vduB vw If you have power, then the ground is missing. Open the doors and peel back the accordion boots... have a look for broken wires. If the wires are ok, disconnect the 2 connectors where the wires enter the body. Look for corrosion. That's all I can suggest, sorry. I'm sure you already tested the bulbs, that's why I didn't mention it.. oops, just did.

Hi Thomas. I want to ask you about the door module. I have a 2002 Bora/Jetta as how you call it, and I have trouble with the door switch. I have to change it. Does this module from Passat is compatible with my Bora? I heard that it's less noisy. When I lock or unlock the car the clicks are so loud that you have the impression that something broke in there. And this switch that is in the door module, can have something to do with the fact that the dome light doesn't always light up when I pull the key from the ignition?? P.S. great video, and keep up the good work!

Szalasi Zsolt The door module can prevent the dome light from coming on when the door is opened... I have not noticed the dome light come on when the key is removed and the door is closed (I will have to check that on a car tomorrow). It might be possible that the Passat module will fit the Bora, but I have no experience with that swap / modification... sorry.

That's ok, I've been talking to some users on a Vw forum and they sayd that is compatible, it was tried on Golf mk4, and it worked, regarding the dome light not coming on when removing the key... Could that be from the Confort Module being faulty? Or can it be from some broken solder and not making contact? Just now when I parked the car, I pulled the key from ignition.... nothing happened. Pitch black. I inserted the key again, put the contact, pulled it out again, voilla... the light came on. Sooo, not always has this problem.

That is an excellent video and I need to change this module because of the doors will lock after 30 seconds after unlocking. I am curious about the new module that you used as they are available on a well known auction site one for $30 from China and another for $125 in US. They look the same and perhaps the ones that are in the US are actually the same ones direct from China. Any thoughts about that? Also, there were parts of the video that the camera did not fully show what you were doing especially removing the module and linkages from the module. It may be obvious when I attempt it, but for a novice like me it might be helpful to see it fully. Regardless, it is well done after getting the replacement module. Thank you for a great video. You work fast.

I have problem, with key is opening just driver door, but with central is open all doors but the driver door sound like is opening twice not like the video, and when i open the driver door interior light not work.. +Daniel Penov What year & model vehicle? Power window? The power window motor / module is what controls the driver door lock actuator. So the 2 problems could be related. Check for broken wires in the door jam... open the door and peel back the accordion boot and look for broken wires. If you have broken wires, repair those and recheck the window & door lock function. If no broken wires, remove the door panel & check the connections at the window motor & door lock actuator. Voltage tests (power & ground) can also be done at that time.

I have a question kind of related to this. My key fob doesn’t work so keep that in mind. I locked my drivers side door tonight, and a bit later I went to get in it and drive it, I used the actual key to unlock the drivers side door. The door unlocks but when I press the unlock Button on the inside of the door nothing happens, (won’t lock or unlock any other doors) and when I put the key in the ignition and turn it to on, the alarm starts going off for about a minute or maybe a bit less then it stops. The car will start but the alarm stays on. Any ideas? It’s happened before and I just got out shut the door and locked and unlocked it with the key then I got in and it was fine. But now this is happening. I get up early for work and I can’t have my alarm continuously going off. Also it’s a 2000 Passat glx with the v6 5 speed manual

When you unlock the car & open the door, the car still thinks that the door is closed... that's why the alarm turns on when you start the car (the car doesn't know that someone entered). If the wiring in the door jam is ok, it's most likely a faulty door lock module. If you also have problems with power windows, check for wetness under the carpet in front of the driver seat... the comfort control module is located there.

@@potatoclipzgaming4008 most likely the door lock module / latch assembly... I use a scan tool to check door open / closed status... as well as locked / unlocked status. If you don't have a scan tool with which to check these conditions... find someone who does, or take a chance with a new module / latch assembly.

Using the key in the door is a mechanical operation (no electronics involved to move the linkage)... my guess is that there is a mechanical issue with the lock / actuator. How do you unlock it then? Open with inside handle or press the unlock button inside?

Remove the key cylinder and use a screwdriver in place of the key cylinder (door open, but latch the latch to simulate a closed door). If the screwdriver also spins, I would start with the door latch / actuator.

Hello Thomas, great video on replacing the lock module! I have a little bit of a problem with my drivers door on my 04 passat 3bg. It displays that its open when its fully closed, and when i open the door it displays that its closed. Everything works fine, i can lock the door without any problems but the alarm goes off because it thinks the door is beeing open. Do you know if it will be useful to change the door lock module to solve this problem? Thanks in advance for replies!

Any prior accident repair / history? I've never seen a switch input signal be backwards from what it should be. Use a wiring diagram to verify correct wire at door jam harness plug(s) and at the door lock module & actuator.

@@EXOVCDS Thank you for answering and sorry for my late reply! The door remains untouched as far as i know when it comes to repairs. The only thing i know that has been done to the door is the stock speakers have been swapped out. Had the local dealership inspect the wiring at the door jam harness, and everything looked fine they said. Im not familiar with the use if wiring diagrams so im not quite sure what im looking for if im going to verify if the wires are correct heh.

Hey, thanks a alot for these videos, they are very helpful and have saved me alot of money. Keep filming your job! :) I have the same kind of problem with my drivers door. My footlight only shines when the door is nearly fully closed. The warning for headlights on and door open also only signals in this position. And if I unlock and only open the driver door, the car locks itself again after 30 seconds, even if the door is still open. Haven't fixed it yet because the central locking of every door still works, but do you think it is the same part you switched in the video? Thanks again!

Sounds like it has the same issue... you can first check the wiring in the door jam to make sure that the problem isn't there.

Remove the motor from the door panel, the you can (should be able to) force the window down... if that does not work, drill out the regulator mounting bolts, move the panel forward and cut the regulator cables: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWWvo3ygfciHjM0m48s

You mean with the key in the door? Probably a bad micro switch in the door actuator. Can you unlock the car from that side? Hold the key in the unlock position for 5 seconds (all windows should go down). If yes, hold the key in the lock position for 5 seconds... all windows should go UP. Yes?

Thomas EXOVCDS ... the car dosen't lock/unlock from the driver side.from the passager side its lock/unlock only the front dors.if i whant to lock/unlock the 4 dors i do it from the trunk.is the only way to lock/unlock my car :/ that thing with 5 second and the windows will go down doesen't work.but it works if i try it from the trunk :))

gabi gabitzu Either the micro switches in the door actuators / modules are bad or the wiring at the comfort control module (under the driver floor carpet) is causing issues. If the carpet / floor is wet, I would lift the carpet and check for wiring damage.

gabi gabitzu Door actuators are the easier fix.. if the CCM / wiring is damaged, that can turn into a headache.

ever run into a problem after replacing one of these and when you turn the key to unlock once, the windows go down? unlocking twice does NOT unlock the other doors. every time I unlock the car with the key, all 4 windows proceed to open. any ideas?

+Daniel Gilbert Is this a new symptom or after a lock module was replaced? I've had mk3 vehicles that were sensitive (if you turn the key too slow, things act-up). Try a capacitive discharge (disconnect the battery & touch the cable together for a few seconds). Also check the comfort control module adaptations... something might have been changed.

+Daniel Gilbert I'd say it was an issue with the lock module then... what was wrong with the old one? Plug the old one back in and compare... my guess is that there are some bad lock modules out there or ones that are sold for the wrong application.

I took the key lock part out of one of my doors (obviously on the rear there's no actual hole). But now when I put it back in and tighten the torx up, no matter how tight it is, the key lock can still be pulled out easily. Any help to resolve this?

Thomas EXOVCDS great thanks. Think where I'm going wrong is I'm didn't pull the handle out when tightening. Which makes sense because over the weekend the bit the flew off on yours came disconnected from the handle on my car. Probably because the c clip isn't holding it

You'll have to remove the door panel to gain access to the inside assembly... sometimes the retaining ring falls off and lands at the bottom of the door.

I have a 2004 passat and the driver door does not lock with keyfob, or the button in the door. The 3 others do as normal. Security light starts blinking which lead me to believe that the car think it is locked. If i open the door, the alarm sounds. If i lock it with the key then everything is normal. So my door lock module does not lock the door electrically. I replaced the door lock module but still not working. Pin 1 and 2 on the doorlock module is the lock unlock pins, they receive no power when keyfob is pressed. Tracing the wires back i end up in a module attached to the window motor. Not sure how the system works entirely, but if im correct the ccm under the floor on the drivers side receives a signal when keyfob is pressed and then sends directions to the window motor module on can H and Can L and then the window motor module sends power to lock or unlock pins on the door lock module. But this does not happen. I hooked up a hantek scope on the can wires, and there is activitity on both wires, when i press the keyfob the signal spikes on both scope channels. One for H can and one for L can. I have continuity checked every wire from end to end and they check out fine. So far I believe the window motor module is at fault, but unsure how I can confirm it. Another problem i have is that the power mirror controls operate rh mirror no matter if the selector is switched to lh mirror or rh mirror, i can not control the lh mirror in any setting. Not sure if this is just the switch, but I ordered a new one to test. But after ordering I was poking around in vcds and found a measuring block showing the status of the mirror switch and it changes state from left to right, but still only operating rh mirror, even if status is lh mirror. Still boggling my mind on that one. Do you have any pointers for me on these issues. Would be much appreciated Robert

95tt Yes, CCM sends signals to window/door modules after receiving signal from fob. Driver window/door module is master module. Other window/door modules are slave modules. Are you sure the correct driver door lock module was installed? I can't explain the mirror switch issue. A capacitive discharge can sometimes clear weird electrical issues.

Thomas EXOVCDS it had the same partnumber as my old door lock module. I believe the only thing wrong with my old module was a microswitch for the light under the door, because i tested the motor by applying power on pin1 and ground on pin 2 and reversed it, and then it locked and unlocked both the old and my new module. My door module never sends power on these 2 wires wich explains why the door is not locking unlocking with fob. But is it the door module faulty and not sending power to the lock module or not receiving signal from ccm to do so. But you say the driver door module is master, does that mean it does get the signal since all other doors lock and unlock?

Solomon Asmerom You can remove the key cylinder and disassemble it to try and remove the broken key. Hey brother all your Vs are great and i hope that you can help me on this: i have a VW passat 2008 TSI and my rear left door has the below issue: 1- the door is not locking or unlocking from the car or the key 2- the windows is not going up or down using the key by holding or from the switch in the driver door or the switch from the door it self 3- the car will not horn when locking from the key iven before the problem happen or start to happen 4- i took all the wires from the door tested them and all are working, 5- i cleaned the connectors 6- non of the fuses are blown tested all brother please help me i got crazy of this more than 5 months now we hope we will have smart people like you in my country

Yanno that doesn't look too terribly bad to replace. I guess you just have to have patience. Hopefully I'll never have to do it in my MKV, but I'll probably give it a whirl if it fails. It was more of a fun factor to do in the past... will still do it when the mug is too clear. On the mk5 the outer door panel comes off, which makes changing components easier... no removal of window regulator required.

Sorry, forgot to mention 1999 Passat B5, Variant. Driver's side rear door completely shut. Also, when I lock/unlock doors, some strange noise comes from the door that I can't open. Is there something I can do?

If there's a door lock button by the window... use a small pick and pull it up (pierce the button and pull up). If it is already up, you will have to do anything you can / have to to get it open.

When I pull the handle, the button gets up, and as soon I let the handle go, the button goes too, even if I hold the button, pull the handle, nothing happens. The button will stay up as long as I hold it, and the door is still stuck I even might try opening the panel while the door is closed. I saw that I can reach the bottom screw, and even take it out. But I'm afraid that I won't be able to take the panel off because you have to apply force from the side, which I can't while it's closed. Any suggestions?

XGamer [CRO] Are you only pulling on the inside door handle or have you also tried to pull on the outside hsndle, while holding the lock button up? Worst case, do what you have to... break the panel to get it off, break the outside handle off so you can get at the pull cable etc. I've been lucky to have never been in the same predicament so far.
