Beetles are not better than a 4x4 but for sure do a great job considering 80+ yr old technology. Respect

@UnderBridge Rock well, there are logging roads, dirt roads and there are 4x4 trails. A beetle cannot go una an actual 4x4 trail. Beetles are exceptional, have owned a few, have a vwThing, a VW iltis, a jeep, and have owned other 4x4 and AWD, the best AWD it was an Audi for sure, the worst a Ford Escape. The Worst 4x4 a Ford Expedition the best 4x4 a Mercedes Gclass on a 460 chassis. And after all this vehicles, no car comes even close to the Merc. beetles are great but would never compare to an actual 4x4. You are correct that a good driver can take the beetle far but eventually the clearance, departing/approaching angles, open diff and lack of power will limit how far you can go. From the RWD vehicles or even FWD used in a rough environment the Beetle is the Best, a though and simple vehicle.

@UnderBridge Rock for you to say that the G’s are crap, just tells me that you don’t know much. I’ve been in Moab. It’s easy to crawl in the stones in Moab. Is like crawling on sandpaper, tons of grip. If you are thinking in capability = Flex, that’s means that you haven’t done much Forrest, mud and snow. My 460 had from factory, hydraulic lockers, fully. Synchronized tcase ( you could be doing 100 in 2x4 and switch to 4H then you could be doing 40k in 4H and switch it to 4L on the fly without slowing down. Toyota or Jeep can’t do that. I went places were other jeeps, Toyotas or Nissans Couldn’t go. It was tough as nails. I dare you to stand your fenders without bending them. Al the running gear above the chassis. Not like jeeps or Toyotas. But that’s ok if you only know the the 463 soccer mom Gs

In generally yes! Specially in 1st and 2nd gear the car runs slower but with more torque, which helps a lot when obstacles appear. Rear axle ground clearance was also improved. Whoever I still hasn't solve a suspension issue. When in full throttle and because axles turn against the clock, suspension stuck with shock fully open and suspension doesn't work. On steeper slopes the car starts to jump as it hasn't suspension at all... But with maximum ground clearance!

Yes, you are right. Front adjustable suspension (original VW), deslocated front axles (original VW) and rear reduction boxes.
