VW Beetle Transaxle Removal

Concise step by step procedure for removing a swing axle style air-cooled Volkswagen transaxle/transmission.
Demonstrated on a 1962 beetle, same basic procedure will apply to later model beetles, karmann ghias, and split buses.

One of the truly great things about a Beetle is that once you get some skill it really is a one man show. Even brake bleeding using a power bleeder.

I am in the middle of replacing the spring plate bushings, spring plate and bushing retainer plate on my 72 super beetle, the bushings are shot, the retainer plates are rusted through and the spring plates are crusty too! New shocks and all those parts need to go back in, but of course, I broke one of the retainer plate bolts… so that needs drilling and so I need to remove the fenders and of course they are attached with self tappers…. So the weld nuts need replacing in the body! …. Will it never end !!!??

It’s an old school bandaid for a tired starter, bad battery cables, or something similar. Most of the time they were added on when someone couldn’t diagnose a slow start problem.
