An absolute bucket list trip for me too. Much of my family is in Sacramento but I’m Scottish and hope to, one day, ship my classic bug over and drive it the length of the PCH 😎

That would be fun! There is a great VW community here in California. We all hang out together when we can.

Did the Porsche owners let you come and play because of your wheels?! 😉 great content by the way. Reminds me of my trip down the 101 I did ten years ago whilst on holiday from the UK 👍🏻

Lol, the Porsche owners are cool friends that like VW's, too! Glad you enjoyed it! It is a beautiful drive.

Such a cool vid! What size engine did the Beetle have at the time, and what was your average speed on the highway? Also, do you have a Freeway Flyer Transmission? Just curious, because I've never taken my Beetle on a long road trip, but considering it. I have a 1600 Dual Port, engine with a 34-PICT-3 Carb, and Freeway Flyer trans.
@Mango65Films3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have a stock 388 trans with a 1641cc. Cant remember the carb size... there's some more details in the comments below. Thank you for watching!

Sweet Dub. The car sits perfectly 👌. I see you have 6” Fuchs all the way around. Is the front beam shortened or stock , and what size tires are you running ?

Great video! Thanks for posting! Would you share how your Beetle is lowered, please? Narrowed beam? Drop Spindles? Shocks or no shocks? Also, what size tires are you running? Thank you again for posting. Great looking Beetle, and great video! Makes me want to take a road trip in my 1960!

Thanks! My rear shocks are Monroe 34839, they are good, but looking into getting some Koni's. My tires are 195/50-15 in the front, 205/65-15 on the back on OG 15x6 Porsche Fuchs. Suspension is a 3 1/2" narrowed/adjustable ball joint beam with disk brake drop spindles. The rear is IRS with type 3 drums indexed to where I think it looks RAD!

@@Mango65Films It's absolutely RAD! Love it! Thanks for sharing! Any issues with rubbing tires up front?

what essentials did you carry for the bug on the road trip? :)
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
Mainly basic tools, extra oil, spare tire... nothing special. Where we were headed, and along the way, we have friends to help if needed, thankfully. I have the best mechanic! We had no issues at all! Planning for the next adventure soon.
@johnd8304 жыл бұрын
Nice bug - really like the Porsche Fuchs. Do you ever have issues with bottoming your pan out at that height? What rear shock are you runnning? Mind giving me your wheel/tire specs, rear swing axle settings if theyre handy?
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I bottom out occasionally, not to much. I was surprised how nice the roads are in SoCal compared to NorCal. My main, lowered car issue is getting in and out of driveways and speed bumps.

What are your tire sizes and beam set up?
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
alindeman1989 Hi, I have a 4” narrowed beam, 195/50-15’s on the front and 205/60-15’s on the back with 6” OG Porsche Fuchs alloys all the way around.

If you leave them stock, you don't have to drive around with the deck lid open.
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
I only have a little larger than a stock motor, 1641 dual port, 388 R & P. The deck lid standoff helps with the cooling...
@brianchisnell15484 жыл бұрын
@@Mango65Films Interesting. Seems like exhaust heat could make its way into the fan. A properly closed deck lid and a sealed engine compartment means cold air in only from the vents, hot air out the bottom. I had a 1641 dual carb, hot cam ect. in the late 70s. Now I roll a stock engine with no heat issues. '64. More of a purest now. That is a beautiful car. Cheers!

what was your average speed and what route did you take?
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
70mph average. 99 south over the grapevine, 5 south. Hwy 2 Angeles Crest to Newcomb's Ranch. On the way home, hwy 1 and 101 north along the coast.
@markdeartola11544 жыл бұрын
@@Mango65Films WOW 70mph? Did you have a freeway flyer? No breakdowns or problems? I want to drive my bug from LA to San Jose, just wondering what the easiest least mountainous route is.
@Mango65Films4 жыл бұрын
@@markdeartola1154 70 mph is my normal cruising speed. No freeway flyer, just a stock 388. No problems at all! For avoiding the Grapevine, we took the 1/101 north, but it takes a lot longer. I could have headed north on the 5, I just take it easy.
