VW Camper Bus Restoration | Underwood Garage 7

Join my wife and I as we do our best to get this old VW camper bus back on the road.
In this episode, I finally paint the vw bus! It is blue and I am so excited to move on to the next steps of restoration and then road trips!
We hope to do some traveling in it once it is restored and roadworthy.

Great to hear from you guys again! Work must be keeping you busy? Listening to your parting comments about never having done something but learning as you go is inspiring to me! I'm 68 yrs old and just pulled the motor out of my GSXR 1000. Pulled the head apart, cleaned things up a bit and am now putting the motor back into the bike. So many wire connections, for me it's daunting! I was thinking the reason you haven't posted in quite a while was, maybe the Underwood family was growing? Cheers, Mark

My '70 bus used to have a bug motor in it with that adaptor plate on it too. Make sure you check those nuts periodically as mine loosened up pretty often. The next motor I put in it I made sure to get the proper case.

looking good.. being the engine came from a buggy make sure it has all the right tins for the bus. the thermostat and the flaps in fan shroud help keep the engine happy too..

That chrome cooling tin could make that engine overheat. Original black tin would be best for a bus.

Well a bus engine runs hotter then a buggy. The chrome tin will hold the heat in. Which could burn up your engine. The black tin will dissipate the heat. Which will help take the heat out of the cooling air so it will cool the cylinder better. I have seen many people put chrome tin in a bus and burn up the engine. Not trying to be a jerk just letting you know that chrome tin is not a good idea for a bus.

Not a jerk at all so glad you helped me out and I didn’t burn it up. Already stripped the chrome tins off. The motor install is another part of the build I am unsure on. Especially since I got the bus with no motor in it. So - all tips are appreciated! Thanks again.

I have a ‘71 westy I am restoring too, in the Dallas area. One thing to note is the tin on a ‘71 bus is different than any other year. It has special back tin to accommodate the doghouse oil cooler bulge, which appears to be the set up on your bug engine. (Is a good thing for better cooling). The right tin is super important when hot weather comes back. Best if you can salvage from your old engine, or there are always a couple for sale on thesamba. I have not seen them new from anyone. Great videos. Enjoy seeing your progress.

I think I am going to do the inside pretty minimal as far as ammenities - not going back with the original westy layout. It blocked one of the side windows off completely and I didn't like that

Absolutely love watching your videos. I have a question about your poptop canvas, what supplier did you purchase it from? I like that the side windows are lower than others offered on the web. Busdepot's canvas looks good but their side windows are smaller. I own a 71 westy myself.
