Regarding beetles in the snow, I remember back in the winter of 1988 we had heavy snow in the east of Scotland, lot's of roads were blocked but I made it over the hill road to where I worked as a truck driver. When I got to the yard in my old beetle, the manager asked me to go a collect another three drivers as they couldn't make it in their cars. And they lived nearer than I did! I'm still driving the same bug today!

I daily'd a '71 beetle with no heater boxes in the NE for the last couple of years...just sold it. I'll probably do the same with my next one! My pro to older cars ... a simple toolbox and a little knowhow will get you out of most trouble. It's also something of a lifestyle I think.

I daily'd a beetle for years and took it off the road 4 years ago to clean everything (no rust) Its heading to be a trailer queen but you might have just changed my mind to daily it again. I never had a problem when it was used daily.

My lady and I have a 1970 Beetle. It has been a learning experience for me. I’ve been a Harley and Chevy guy for years, but I’ll be damned if I haven’t grown quite fond of this oversized go cart. Now I will be learning how to work on its brakes and wiper motor because that’s what seems to be requiring service for this moment in time. So anyway, I appreciate the videos. Keep up the good work.

I daily Herbie for the last 3 years and it's downright stressful 😪. You two are my favorite power couples . Traffic is truly if the most defensive event outside of work you have to endure. Daily since 2005 with my current Beetle. Keep the engine happy, (Timing, Oil, Airflow over the engine) and it will take care of you. Driving the speed limit is no problem. If they can't drive the speed limit, just let them pass. Drive friendly, and you'll be fine. 1972 Standard. 49 Years with the original Engine and Transaxle. They were recently replaced.

My Daddy Rebuilt my 68 bug oversized Pistons ,Oversized Heads, Headers Exughst muffler , $5.00 in gas A Week 1976ubtil 2.yrs Later My dad Couldn’t Get the valves adjusted he got so frustrated And gave up he said I’m sorry it just don’t want tune like when I rebuilt it.60 hours . Loved Driving it.

This was a really different perspective on the ups and downs. I appreciated everything. My 2017 GM Canyon torque converter just gave out - the old '68 Beetle has taken over, and she runs like a top. Tells us plenty about build quality.

With electric cars it will be insane. 0 to 60 in 2 seconds? Good to know my VW takes 16 seconds. I know to drive in the slow lane. It is fast enough. People "always pass VW" even if VW is speeding. It is in their minds - I see VW=slow car. Got to pass it. I know that because I had a sports car and drove under the speed limit and "no one tried to pass me" I found that interesting.

Bugs are too light at the front, put on some extra rally style lights mounted , bonus night vision too, just add a relay to take the load off the ignition switch circuit. Keep the heavier steel wheels upfront and use alloys at the back, no skinny tires. 18 psi up front 28 at back.

Yes you are very right, and I hope folks pay attention to that tire pressure. I think everybody sticks 32 pound and a lot of them.

@@SladesVWBeetle They do that 32lbs because it says so on the tire. My wheel barrow has 32lbs of pressure. So, the correct pressure is either on the door jamb or glove box suggested by manufacturer of the car. Or owners manual. That is the numbers you use and YOU do it. Garage jockeys don't know sh!t. It will handle better tires last longer, etc.

Nice job, guys!! I especially like the "Pro" about fixing stuff yourself on a vintage bug. I open the hood of my 2017 Toyota, and I realize there is nothing I can do except check the oil and the washer fluid level. Big difference!! BTW, I loved your reference to the Plymouth Valiant. We had a couple of those (incl. Dodge Dart) back in the 60s. That slant 6 engine was SO RELIABLE. Amazing.....Looking forward to the body work video!

Love your channel! I have my 3rd and final Beetle. 1969. Bought her 16 yrs ago sitting along the road, for $800. Patina red. And everything worked when I drove home! She was a daily driver for 10 yrs. I just had a 1776 dropped in her. Mainly to be able to get around in traffic. Portland OR. area, this little car is invisible to drivers! A lot off pro’s and con’s but it’s still a beetle that is loved or hated. This is a car that run’s forever with minor maintenance on it. A cheap car to maintain if you look for durable parts. These day’s on the road is like having a heart attack after heart attack, because they are all like wild animals running to there meat. But I love these cars and even other type off cars. I live in NJ and only daily my 58 Beetle in the Summer now. It's a great daily driver only downside it doesn't weigh much so every car on the road weighs twice as much if you get in a accident you will lose.

My 74 Super is almost a daily driver. When I have my small kids or it’s really hot and muggy (I live in the South (USA)) I take my SUV, but I have no qualms about driving her everywhere. If I am on the interstate, I just stay in right or middle lane. I keep it around 74. Check your oil, keep it maintained and you won’t have issues. It stands out more, which is actually a safety feature. I did put disk brakes on the front. Otherwise it’s stock.

With an older Volkswagen with an air-cooled engine, we don't have to worry about things failing such as the radiator, radiator hoses, water pump, coolant temperature sensor(s), oxygen sensor(s), catalytic converter, windshield washer pump, power steering pump, power steering hoses, compressor for air conditioning, suction/discharge hoses for air conditioning, power brake booster vacuum pump, power brake booster vacuum pump hoses, etc. We don't have to worry about potential electrical issues/failures with engine and/or body computer modules, nor with electrical accessories such as power door locks, power windows, power exterior mirrors, power sunroof, self-dimming rear view mirror, automatic headlights, automatic windshield wipers, speed/cruise control, automatic engine start/stop, fancy dashboard, remote key-less entry, remote engine start, etc. We don't have to periodically change the coolant or timing belt. Usually we don't have to periodically replace disposable engine filters for the air or oil. For the majority of us we don't need to worry about clogged fuel injectors, dirty/sticky throttle body, automatic transmission issues, torque converter issues, etc. We don't need to keep the maps for a built-in navigational system updated, or pay a monthly fee for satellite radio with CD quality music - both of which we can do with our cellphones anyway. And lastly we don't have to worry about anyone stealing our airbags, catalytic converter, pretty aluminum alloy wheels, or (usually) fancy car radio!

Slade, good morning! one thing to add to your sensation of speed in a bug. When I resto'd my '75 we spent a day doing a garage alignment. What a waste of time! The bug felt exactly like you described. I just felt it wasn't right. I ended up getting a professional alignment and it was the best $130 I've spent in a while. He showed me what never gets checked in a garage alignment. Lets just say that the bug is like a slot car now. I can drive 60 plus on our Western Mass twisties ( with safety in mind 🙂) and its solid as a rock! It was amazing how much some of the parameters were off, especially the track between the front and rear axle.

It’s definitely worth getting done professionally. If you can at least get it close until you get it there, that’s helpful. There’s only one shop near me that will touch them. Most of the other guys do not understand them any longer.

I agree with both of you, I would by a 60's vehicle IF I was to drive which I dont but I have driven many cars & the only ones that stand out for me the most that where easy to drive was the 60's cars. Even though todays cars maybe superior in many respects, they all lack one thing that in the 60's you couldn't ignore, YOU HAD TO DRIVE THEM instead of todays cars you sat in a comfy seat & the car is equipped with every known luxury appointments those older cars didn't have such as PROPER INSULATION, WORKING HEATERS etc lol I only drove 2 beetles, a 68 & a 72 beetle, then a late 60's VW Panel van. They use to scare the hell out of me because without the insulation, you felt every mile & you had to stay focused while driving unlike today people can sleep, talk on their phones, apply make ups hair spray etc etc etc LOL Honestly I prefer to drive the car & know how the car handles & runs & you knew what was wrong with it just by sound & vibration & speed alone, today you cant tell anything thanks to their infernal digital technology which ruins the driving experience & Ruins how to really drive a car in its simplistic state. I enjoyed this video very much, REAL PEOPLE DRIVE :) The others cause road rage cause of mindless road stupidity lol

My 73 Super was a daily driver until my alternator brewed up from a mistake I made almost 10 years ago. What a disaster. The voltage regulator brewed up, too, and fried the battery and some wiring. And then I got a bad tank of fuel that was full of silt and have had to pull my carb three times in four weeks for a clean-out. A little tip on getting an alternator to line up the fan properly in the bore of the fan shroud... loosen the two screws that hold the shroud to the bottom tin. Loosen the alternator clamp. Now you can change the angle of the fan shroud to the alternator shaft and get the fan straight into the bore. When you get it correct clamp the alternator first, then the shroud screws. The alternator/generator slides on the alternator stand and raises or lowers the pulley end to get the fan end in correctly. Also remember your fan shim spacing, and pulley spacer if applicable. Different brands of alt/gens aren't the same diameter and they come off-axis in the shroud.

I have a 66 ghia (my first car) and a 73 standard bug which is my daily, they are only a few years apart but those little improvements made the 73 a joy to drive compared to the ghia, thanks for the tips keep it up they're very helpful

I try to take my karmann beetle out daily (4 drum brakes) she can definitely cope with today"s traffic (brisbane Australia) I too try to take my 79 MGB out everyday for a spin (owned for over 20Yrs} MGB can definitely be a daily ( except when temp outside is 33 degree centigrade or above) overheating close to red is very scarely at times,in jams moving traffic , makes a hugh difference} It's nice to let other motorists know that cars (not ALL some only) of the 60s 70s is not left behind in todays traffic. Hot weather in jams no problems A/C in in my MGB blowing air out under 10 degrees C , You are comfortable ( again over 33C careful) If were planning to owe my karmann long term I will consider putting in A/C. Both the above classic are fully capable of todays traffic, if fully prepared (both driver and car) Cheers!

I've had six Beetles with one in my back yard to restore in a year or so. As far as driving one as an only car, no way. Easy to work on but that is what you do too much of. Engines come out in as little as eight minutes for me but dropped valves, burned valves, not enough heat until 8 miles at highway speeds, even a hole in a piston, no air conditioning. My other 60's cars were far more reliable. Even both my brothers had trouble with their Beetles. I do like Beetles but only for local drives and I like Beetles more than hard to work on fool infected new vehicles.

Interesting discussion but unless you can do all the work short of an engine or tranny rebuild yourself (or sig other) I could never recommend any VW from the 70s as a d.d. In reality, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any vintage VW being driven this way since maybe the 80s. In Canada where I live it is just too cold and they put salt on the roads which means rust, and lots of it. They have gas heaters but still your windows get covered in ice . Thumbs down to a Beetle d.d.!

Mechanics are in hi regard because country folk make things last and are much more willing to keep an old vehicle going rather than waste money on a 90K pice of junk they try and pawn off as a "transportation vehicle" - they are more like a fancy computer/iphone with wheels strapped on as an afterthought. Plastic engine ,plastic transmissions and nothing else! I myself are like you lady, I am going to buy an easy to work on 19560 old reliable. I will not buy a car with a computer anymore (even though I have 2003 Jeep TJ i6 4L).Good lucj=k . Go country and stay away from blue cities!

Boy, could I pile on this one. I've driven beetles for 50 (yes) years, most of that as a daily driver. Almost got killed in my '68...yes, rear ended...car cut in half....my survival, a miracle ! Modern drivers and cars (i.e. SUV's) are a LETHAL combination. They're predators with an appetite for bugs ! Speed limits...ha, ha, ha. So I'm STILL driving beetles...I doubled down. Yes, I live dangerously. In the country where you live, I'd probably feel safe...in a big city, less so. Yes, beetles are cheaper to buy and maintain, but mechanics have lost the technical knowledge of how to work on them. Most tire shops can't even install the tires any more. Oil must be supplemented with zinc additives for flat tappet engines. Many also use gas additives because of ethanol in fuel . Good parts are much harder to obtain though still available. The results of all this are that much more responsibility is placed on the driver...to become more educated, knowledgeable, and more personally involved in the care , operation and maintenance of the vehicle. The whole infrastructure is gone. You the owner, driver are it. Yes, the internet helps some. Now you can commiserate with the diminishing community of counterculture addicts (a sort of modern technological Luddite) coaxing their superannuated machines down the interstate.

Totally agree that the chinese parts are very substandard, in fact rubbish. I've thrown out 3 vaccume distributors with leaking das, also have trouble balancing disk break set ups, (side to side).

I love the old Bugs, I've had a '65 and a '73, but we have to be honest, they're death traps... they are the least safe car of the classic car era (at least in the United States). The gas tank is up in front of you, not underneath and behind you, in a head-on collision there's a chance the gas tank will burst and splash gasoline into the passenger compartment, and if you are trapped in the car from the accident (likely) you might burn to death... Plenty of people have died in VW Bugs, that's just a fact, and it's not something the fawning historians want to tell you with "Herbie The Love Bug" and all, but you do have to drive these cars with a certain level of awareness and just a little paranoia, because a whole lot of accidents can kill you in these cars. Still love them though, just be aware of what you are driving and remain aware of what's going on around you.

Gas mileage is not that great in a Beetle. The flat windshield is not as good as the 73 SuperBeetle with the curved windshield. 1600cc single carburetor engine...with MacPherson strut suspension. It holds on the road much better and on radial tires. In the winter it has snow tires because I go snow skiing on the ski hills. It is 4 speed manual stick shift with a clutch.(theft deterrent) Being a dual port manifold it has a bit more power. Driving 60MPH it felt more stuck to the road, so did not swivel to the side when you passed a transport truck going in the opposite direction on a single lane highway. The vacumn behind the trailer is what sucks you in onto their lane on the flat windshield cars. I also owned a 1970/1600cc stock VW so the flat windshield. This car had winter snow tires with the thumb sized chunks missing in the tire to grab snow. Bias ply tires. . I also drove VW vans. 1959 window van that was built out inside to be a camper van without the poptop. I worked at a camper factory and those guys built it out inside so everything was removable so I could put in my trade tools.(painter). . This was a box on wheels and cross winds do affect the drive(meaning the vacuum as semi trucks going the opposite way really was something you had to prepare for. It was the perfect hippy van. Who bought it when we updated to a 1972VW van. Gas mileage was under 20mpg(imperial gallon). Which is what every car manufacturer uses because they said MPG and they did not specify which gallon. They used the larger Imperial gallon as that is 160 oz (compared to U.S, 128 oz) . They also do their tests on a dyno so the car does not move. There is no wind resistance and no rolling resistance of 4 tires if only 1 tire is spinning. All auto manufacturers do it so no customer would get that stated mileage. Then I bought a 1965 VW station wagon. That car hugged the road as there was no wind resistance compared to a Beetle. They went so good that I threw a rod. That car is kaput. I later bought another and the sheet metal was missing around the motor. I didn't think at the time but that is the cooling for the motor. I warped a head on that motor and had to drive 1500 miles to the nearest shop (Australia) which I accomplished losing about a case of oil 16 quarts and ran out but near to where they were pouring oil on the dirt roads to keep the dust down. They were using 90w gear oil. I needed oil so that went into the engine. It didn't leak out as fast and I just had to watch for the red oil pressure light to come on to add more. Could do 60MPH on 2 cylinders . I got to town but did not have time to fix it so left it. . Safety. Keep the front gas tank full and the screw on gas lid (original equipment) and it is as hard as a V8 engine block. Fluid does not compress(which is why your brakes work) As for honking horns it is a VW not a drag racer. People go around. Got a Honda now. 15 years of VW and parts were expensive...and no mechanic knew how to fix them. Clymer publications was the best book because they showed a wiring diagram. Chilton does not. You have to know how to do all the stuff yourself. If it air cooled it is foreign to other repair shops so they refuse to work on them.
