VW Fox: Volkswagens last attempt at entry level cars in the U.S.

I grew up in Brazil and the Fox was actually based on the VW Voyage, which was itself based on the Gol. I remember them being light and fun to drive. The Brazilian version being lighter than the US as it had less safety and emission equipment.

My dad had a 1989 VW Fox four-door with a black driver side door. Brow/beige interior with the driver side door having rainbow patterns. I had so many fond memories in that car, especially that to when the muffler came off on a speed bump near our house! 😂 Eventually the car was parked at my uncle’s and eventually scrapped.

I miss those old VW’s. My dad had a Scirocco and a rabbit. Back then I could never really understand the appeal of those things. But nowadays you’d be the coolest cat in the neighborhood with an old square back.

Yeah...My folks had a few Bugs when I was very young so I appreciated them early. But I could see anyone into "Detroit Muscle" would look at these little German cars as jokes!

The last VW designed to use an air cooled engine, in Brasil these came with the flat 4 from the beetle.

I came very close to buying a new Fox in 1993 after graduating high school. But I ended up instead with a very clean 64 Beetle and replaced the stock 1192cc 40hp engine with a 1641cc with maybe 75hp. It was quick for what it was, and built like a vault. It was my every day and was just excellent. I still like the Fox, but was glad I went with VWs original entry level car instead.

Last I saw a VW Fox in 1992 on the streets when I was 12 years old and in Batman Returns movie. I would like to have one in a burgandy four door fully loaded now, these were cool car at the time.

Yeah..I recall it feeling like a smaller Jetta then. But the interior was alot more Motel 6 LOL. I liked the wagons because they were different.

I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. This is the third one I have watched and also hits home. the first car I ever purchased on my own was a 1993 Volkswagen Fox 2 door Wolfsburg Edition. It was red, and had a little spoiler on the trunk (nothing like the oversized ones of today). I really loved this car. It was great on gas, and almost sporty due to it's size. It had weird idiosyncrasies like a belt that needed to be connected to the door otherwise the car would not start (and if it broke it was an expensive fix). Also,. the tachometer that was the same size as the speedometer was interesting to get use to. The single directional indicator was not just something of the Fox - this was present on all Volkswagens of the era. I am sure they figured they were just letting you know it was on - you could figure out which one by adjusting the stalk. Also, the warning sound that your lights were on, or keys were in the ignition was fun - it was La Cucaracha - and fit since the card was made in either Brazil or Mexico at the time. Many fun memories of that little car - and oh the adventures that it went on.

Lol...I'm glad your liking them and thank you! I noticed my Chevette one this morning was getting some new found attention too. At least your Fox had a tach. the ones without had a giant clock there instead? I'm biased, but I think quite a few came out good, but didn't get many views.

hey just watched a few of your videos and wanted to say that there’s something original about the style of your videos. I do manage youtube channels and know about how this works. I think the kind of dark vibe that is felt in your videos could be something that might take you very far. So please keep it up, and don’ care about what some audiences might say and make you change you style and become just an information channel. Keep the character and continue making content more frequently and it will grow much more than you can imagine! Cheers ❤

I test drove a new ‘88 two-door. I’ve always been a bit on the frugal side, so I decided to take a look. There were things that appealed to me - the handling wasn’t bad - but overall, it felt cheap, crude and already dated. I had the budget to move up to a Jetta, so I ended up buying one instead of a Fox.

Sounds like you were one of the VW buyers that just upgraded themselves in the showroom. The Fox was weird because it had some stuff that was pretty good for the class, also had alot of obvious cost cutting. A good amount of it you touched and felt from the driver's seat.
