VW GOLF MK5 BATTERY DRAIN SOLVED

After market radio upgrade caused battery drain.
This is a quick cheap solution.

This fixed my golf Mk5 (2008) android head unit's battery drain issue, which had troubled me for 2 years since i have upgraded the factory unit to android version. After this fix, the head unit will reboot when i restart the car (after a brief shut down ~ 1 hour). Radio station memory still retains by the HU, time and date soon self align back to satellite time approx 1 min later. Thanks! Great simple quick fix.

It is better to update the can gateway to a later software version. This will also fix the problem.

Hi, yes an update will fix the problem I guess but this option was't available to me at the time.

Hi! It seems pretty simple but i have 2 problems: 1 - Where did you bought the conections to the mini fuse of the car? i just cant find it! 2 - Which is the amperage of the cable that you conect to the fuse? Is it a normal cable? A 10Amp cable? A 20? They arent all the same.... Please can you help! Thanks

So that didnt work... battery went flat... so i pulled the door fuse out which powers the two front doors and hey battery seems to hold power after 24hrs .. so my fault is in the central locking unit on passenger door..

I have a vw golf with a 310 radio in. I put a vw golf 510 in and next morning battery was dead. Can it be fixed pleased. I was told I can't fit a 510 model into my 2006 golf.

Ian Kirkpatrick you need to get a new canbus gateway.

You can also run a switch on the radio fuse in the fuse box, you just need to remember to switch it off over night...

@@craigaustin5502 thanks Craig.. I've heard you can get a cambus gateway upgrade and that fixes the issue but it's 100 euros 😕

@mark - run two 3 metre wires from the radio fuse in the fuse box to the dash and run a switch to turn the fuse off, then the radio is switched off when the car is turn off, I have just done it, $15 instead $100 and trying to reset your gateway

Hi Marco, this method goes through the ignition key so theoretical cuts the power going direct and stops the drain, its worked for problems but not all, give it a try only cost you a few beer tokens 👍
