Not so long ago i test drived a mk8 clubsport and a polo gti . I think the clubsport is a little bit too refined. It's fast on straight and in corners and the lsd works well but it feels more like a gt car rather than a proper hot hatch. I liked the polo gti more because it feels more like a classic hot hatch.

Love the TCR, but for its price range, that’s just not a car I would ever choose tbh. It’s cool as a “cool GTI trim”, but there’s so many other sports cars I would buy instead at that price. I bought my base model MK7 GTI new in 2017. It’s now IS38, custom tuned, meth kit installed and ready to be tuned, lowered on coilovers, rear sway bar soon, and all other FBO options, including upgraded brakes. All of that puts me still well under TCR stock pricing. Like thousands and thousands under! My next mod is a wavetrack LSD, which it needs for sure, but that’s only $1200 (I will install it myself), which is nothing. After that, my modded base model S will easily out-handle a TCR, and keep up with modded ones as well because it’s practically the same car now.

People who call the standard GTI dull misunderstand what it's for. VW don't target potential Civic Type-R buyers or Megane Trophy drivers. The GTI and the R and all the fast golfs are for people who like the performance but who are not looking for the edginess and the rawness. The GTI is perfect for the people for whom it is intended, and it sucks if what you want is a Type-R.

I thought the same when the MK8 came out but honestly I prefer the MK8 now, it looks so much more modern. I look at a MK7.5 now and it looks super dated compared to the MK8

@@nickluntz4218 it’s because you see Golfs all over the place. And VW doesn’t change much to the sportier versions. With the GTI it’s a bit more different. But look at the R and then the R-line… no wonder it looks outdated quickly. At a quick glance it looks like any other r-line you see all the time.

@@doloresberry3144 I had a brand new fiesta st3 on order since January Ford have taken some of the extras off to save on conductor chips was getting build dates then changed from 3 to 5 door & no build date & very poor customer service so brought a used Golf GTD & got the car in 5 days & customer service from VW dealer was spot on. Wish I’d moved away from Ford earlier

Still not sure with mk8. I went with mk 7,5 in the end. I am really happy with it but I do miss the AWD now, I did not really need it since it was all nice and sunny when I bought it but now when the weather is starting to get bad, I miss not getting the R. 5k more expensive but AWD is AWD in the end.

R is not fully AWD, its a special awd where they put as much power to the front wheels and when not possible then power will go to the back

@@martijnvkk Oh, I did not know that. I just know that the R smoked me on launch when I had a bit of fun and raced the R. His roll is not faster than mine but start is night and day difference. Bad weather even more. I do plan on getting a dogbone mount on my GTI so that might help with launch, at least I hope so.

true, but the GTI is perfectly fine with a set of winter tires on them. Ran winters on my MK7 that's lowered, with 245 width tires, and IS38 custom tuned, in snowy UT winters with zero issues.

it's VW : infotainment slow ( maybe windows , but for sure not QNX ) , materials ( the dash reflect in the windshield ) , shifter not existing , touch screens replace buttons because it's expensive ( to make them premium)... I stay BMW ( old style , before 2020 )

@@alias3009 I test drove them both and decided to get the R. Much better handling in low speed corners, you get the 4wheel drive in winter which is a big bonus where I live and you can actually drift the car more or less even on dry asphalt.

@@alias3009 That's hard to judge. I definitely didn't notice the little bit of extra weight on the R but it feels much more suited for track use especially now with the new 4wheel drive. Last generation I would pick the TCR over the R. I've done sub 8minutes on the ring last week(bridge to gantry) which is a lot quicker compared to my previous 7 R.

8th generation drives so much better, every review says the same thing, simple as that it’s a big improvement over the 7 in the most important area!!
