VW - How to replace car key cover

Thanks! My key randomly stopped working one day (no remote function), could still open/close the car door and turn it on/off manually, but the alarm would go off between opening the door and starting the car. Opened the key as you showed, seems like the tiny circular metal plates in the lock button got out, so had to align them properly and now the key works again!

Top tip: Once dismantled, use the blade of an old VW key in behind the key hinge to break the adhesive. You may need to half rotate the blade out to get deep inside the key. Then work around the edge of the exposed part with a flat-blade screw driver.

Thanks for posting video , was really tight to split case . Practised on old key first ,and broke along edge. So took time on replacement key ,and managed to split eventually.

In my experience the key fob is bonded together you wont split them ,i used a soldering iron to melt carefully took an age , be really careful don,t want to damage the circuit board and chip inside ,if you can do that your home free take your time ,as putting it in the new case is not to difficult fiddle is all , i did this on my key fob golf 2016 mk7 TDi .

Same here ... no Chance to open the case like in the Video. Its just not possible to split the case without cracking. Key Production Date 27/17

Yeah mine was glued too. Managed to put a flathead into the board but at that point the keys not worth it at this point

This video is golden! thanks! My key gone dead with not even using it. I replaced battery and still no sign of life. The LED light doesn't blink. I don't know whats wrong with it.

My key did the same... I whatch this video and start the disasembly... at the 3rd piece of plastic out.. i've tried the batery and star to work... Was just missing some fresh air.

My Key has the same issue. It just died in my pocket. Thankfully the Key is still able to start a keyless car, so there must be just a partitial defect.

I'm stuck at 1.12 / 1.15 - prying near the key pivot doesn't seem to cause the two halves to separate. Any tips? BTW I found Torex 7 was the right size for the screw but maybe T6 is OK too.

hi! if it is the same car key should not be a problem, however, it is possible that the two halves of the key housing are glued together. You can try to cut them in half with a scalpel (with this car key I do not recommend this method is very risky.) or try acetone or other liquid for removing glue. Be careful not to damage the electronics inside.

The factory new key is glued together, no way to open it that easily!

Yes, the transponder is soldered into the PCB. All you have to do is transfer the electronics, key blade and battery to the new housing.
