VW Jetta S Battery Replacement Change Without Resetting Anything at the Dealership for immobilizer

I have heard that at a local Firestone here, they wouldn't change a customers battery because they said it needs to be reset by the dealership so they left her stranded and forced to go to a Volkswagen Dealership for a battery...I have heard some cars need a battery power boost to hold the memory for things like the seats and mirrors and radio stations, but never heard of an immobilizer but its about the key fob and the security system. I guess its an anti theft system. Follow along as I change this Battery...

2018 Jetta 1.4 tsi. Removed battery for 2 hours to get to the firewall. Reinstalled the battery, turned car on, started up , all dashboard error lights came up. You do full steer to the left till it stops, then steer full to the right till the wheel stops, that relearns your max steering , all the warning lights went off immediately. Didn't even have to drive it. Factory radio with carplay was fine too.

Interesting, things like this that will happen is the reason alot of places will not touch a battery in a VW. At least yours started

Appreciate the video, just to let you know I think when the dealer resets the thing it tells the system it’s a brand new battery and the alternator charges it differently because it doesn’t need as much recharging

I don't think so because let's say the old battery is bad and the Alternator is over charging to make up for it, when you install a new one, then the computer will see that its overcharging a charged battery..its all computerized nowadays with sensors.

Had the same issue on 17 JETTA. Dead battery. Autozone has a dongle that plugs into a battery pack and the car computer plug under steering wheel that keeps the cars memory safe while replacing you’re battery. Autozone let me use both if I bought the battery from them, which I did for $179.

By me Autozone will not change those batteries anymore. They don't even change key fob batteries. And the local Firestone won't change a VW battery either, they told her to take it to the Dealership because it needs to be reset.

@@kfrerix9777 when I was at autozone, they stopped replacing batteries because they broke one that cost 400.00 dollars and who knows if it actually worked before, customer got a brand new fob from the dealership, paid by autozone.

@kfrerix9777 customers come in with some funky fobs and right off the bat, I would say this thing might not survive the new battery just to let you know before I crack it open..😆

It can work on most cars because the 12 volt source is still there like it never was disconnected, as long as it doesn't fall off the terminals and stay connected

@Al Young Cuda oh wow lol amazing. I called vw dealer they said the OEM batteries are discontinued and being replaced by AGM which will need reprogramming but what I'm wondering about is if replacing with another acid battery will the car still throw off the error code?

The problem with Many German cars is they alternator has different rates of charge (not sure about VW). My Audi is tuned for an H8 with 900 amps. If you put a larger battery in the alternator will over heat trying to keep up at a lower amp rate. Too small and it will overcharge it boiling off the electrolyte. So it may work short term but may also cause problems later (or not).

They have voltage regulators for that to regulate the amount it charges otherwise yes it will run a mock. But yes install the size battery it calls for, some call for a more stronger battery, depending on the options a car have

If you replace the battery with the same one you might be ok. But the computer needs the information on the new battery to ensure it charges it correctly. Without updating the software you could either damage the new battery or cause it to die prematurely in a year or two.

Unless you have it in writing, I never heard of it affecting the charging system, its more of the immobilizer that loses its memory and it won't start the car with the key or key fob and it needs to be reprogrammed at the dealer with their scanner.

I guess you could just put jumper cables on and power it from another car as you change the battery. Yeah, Auto Zone wouldn't change out the battery.

Yes just make sure the clamps don't fall off, you know some people have jumper cables from years ago with weak clamps..😆

I didn't read through all the comments but you will destroy the new battery of you don't use the VAG OBD to input the new battery information. The system adjusts over time to compensate for the battery aging. If you don't encode the new battery it will charge at a higher rate.

I understand what you are saying but the computer, the ecmor pcm is also smart enough to detect the voltage, its no different than having your battery never removed and recharged at a shop from low voltage back to almost normal, it will adjust as needed when the sensor tells it...but we will see, it has a 3 year full replacement warranty and most batteries only last about 4 years of normal use.
