Today I attempt to remove the axles from the split transmisson for the 1967 VW Karmann Ghia. It's a FAIL....Let's see if we can bring it back to life! CT's Garage, CT, ctmoog #restoration #vw #rust

This 1967 Karmann Ghia had the wrong transaxle installed over 40 years ago. I'm trying to remove the axles but the case has to be split...What a mess.....
@vayabroder7293 жыл бұрын
Holy S! Not too familiar with that old style of transaxle but looking at it it doesn’t look too much different from the more familiar ones. To get the axles out on the later units you need to take the circlips on each side of the differential out. Like you said, the plastic plates are missing but I have read they are not used on the old splitcase units. The brake drums are OEM; maybe you could get those turned and reuse them. You can sell that transaxle to someone who needs an early one and find either a good used one or a rebuilt in the correct model for your year. The seams on the axle boots go at 10-11 o clock on the left side and 1-2 o clock on the right side. For sealant on the axle covers use Permatex Aviation Sealer on all the paper gaskets/spacers and use a bead of Permatex gear oil resistant sealant around the lip of the side cover itself. To save yourself some possible aggravation with leaks after you reinstall them, make sure all dimples around the mounting holes are straightened. Also use a set of axle cover stiffeners; Empi and others stock them. They distribute the load and make sure your newly reassembled axle covers don’t leak. Ask me how I know; we had to reinstall the transmission on my friend’s car twice. After we put the stiffeners on it didn’t leak; works like a charm. Spoiler: I saw the new rebuilt transaxle on the floor in one of your shots. 🤣😂🤣😂

I'm kind of surprised you didn't clean up a lot of the crud off before you started taking it apart. Just to keep it from getting it inside the transaxle and other working parts. Makes it a whole lot easier to find part numbers and all the bolts / nuts holding it together. At the start of this video I saw you struggling with removing the cotter pin, their is an easier way. The next time you need to remove a cotter pin you might want to try just straightening out the ends and then just grabbed the top and tap on the pliers with a hammer and it will come right out and the pin will still be reusable if needed. Not all bent up and broken. I generally used my vice grips rather then pliers for a better grip. Anyway, it was just an idea that came to mind. Good luck on the rest of your projects. Well I can honestly say I have never seen anyone put a split case in a ghia. So I dont know. in the old days we chucked every split case trans and put full cases in. I think my auto shop teacher in HS took one apart once but I dont even remember but vaguely about the axles coming out from the inside now that you mention it. This is unknown territory....Should be wide axles in that car and usually from what I know they have welded on sway bars on the tubes. Would the short axles even fit on the car? dont think so but Never done that.

In reality does it really matter that the transaxle is not correct. As usual he started out just to make it a beater around the lot. Then he said said this won’t be a full concourse restoration. So now it’s really important to change something that nobody will see. He never has a plan and bet there will be more change to this ride. That’s way I only check in once a month.

The thing about VW is that they changed stuff willy nilly. Unlike American manufacturers, they didn't wait for the new model year to change things. They would swap parts mid production to the new parts.
@dorianfulton71683 жыл бұрын
As I recall, split cases were crash boxes (no syncho 1st) and to be avoided at all costs.
When parts don't shift, never resort to the hammer or any kind of muscle force. Step back, and have a second, third, fourth look.....look into the engineers mind who designed it. Ask yourself the why, what and how and soon you will find a way to get the whole thing off or on. Oven cleaners do a good job of getting greasy mud off, followed by pressure washing.

Dude, seems you had your head down on this one and forgot to come up for air. Suddenly you’re in too deep. Made life incredibly hard work for yourself here by not stopping and considering what you’re doing and in what order. Splitting the case on the trans is MAJOR, and best left for the experts. It’s a shame you didn’t stick with stitching in your floor plans, and if you really do need to get into the trans/gearbox as we call it here in the UK, that could have been a job for VW Darrin. Do you think you’ll be able to put that trans back together???? My advice, finish one thing before starting another. I.e get the floors finished before giving yourself any other tasks. Otherwise you’ll end up with a project in so many bits, it’ll never get done
