This was exactly the fault on my wife's Polo( 2005 ). Thank you very much for your video which is very good. Took me straight to the fault and saved me loads of time and hassle. As you say at the end of your video, the warning lights reset by themselves once you have changed the fuse and then drive the car over 10mph. Thanks once again.

You're welcome. Yes, loads of people think vagcom is needed to reset but this simply isn't the case. ABS is only 'active' above 8mph at which point it performs a self check. This isn't 'strange' or unique. All ABS does this. It's a legal requirement.

Top job, Lauren, that's great to hear. Hopefully, that'll give you the confidence to tackle more jobs and save yourself more money. I wouldn't trust most garages (mechanics) to service a walking stick; if they're not incompetent they're plain dishonest. After all, if that garage had quoted you 70 quid for an hour's diagnostics and investigation, then rang you to say they'd fixed it for 50, you'd have never even thought of DIYing, would you? Welcome aboard and keep the faith.

It never ceases to amaze me that trained (I assume) mechanics utterly fail to get back to basics - they'd rather play 'parts darts' as long as you are paying (highly profitable for them)!!! Before I watched the video I was already in fusebox to tighten fuses nuts, but didn't notice the cracked one .maybe reason was I don't know which one is for abs... This saved me from headache and nightmares just after I made big service on my car

Mate, God bless thee. This happened to me on my way to thee mot. I fixed it with a piece of wire. Still holding. Not yet inside but fingers crossed. Later edit: the car passed the MOT. I bridged the ruptured fusible with a piece of wire. Worked like a champ! Many, many thanks mate!

Hi rockdude100, my advice would be to replace the belt. When you do, be sure to clean the pulleys before fitting the new one (brake cleaner is good). It could be something or it could be nothing, but a new belt is cheap enough that it can be replaced as a precautionary measure. Far better to replace it at your leisure too, rather than as an emergency repair should it break.

My dads Polo (2003 / 1.2) had this same problem. Fault code was failure in the hydraulic pump (cannot remember exact code unfortunately) but the actual cause was in fact this broken fuse. Repair shop estimation for the controller + pump was around 1000 eur! (Finland) Even salvaged parts were around 400 eur. I was able to fix this by replacing the fuse. This really saved us! Huge thanks!!

mt7580 Hi, thanks for watching and for the kind words. If I put on my cynical hat, I'd say your garage were trying to rip you off!!! However, with "computerised fault codes" these days, too many people (incl trained mechanics) take them as "gospel" and forget to get back to BASICS. When summat isn't working, yes check the codes, that gives you a pointer, but test the power supply (connections, fuse, wiring) FIRST before condemning expensive components.

Wow... just reading through the comments... I'm amazed at how surprised the viewers are. I agree, here in the states, those fuses are a high failure item... sometimes you can catch before they crack using a thermal imager. The weak connection at the terminal eyelet or strip fuse glows and hot to the touch.. I've seen them cook that entire assembly. A bit dangerous considering the battery just below is highly flammable/explosive. Lol. Great video! I'll need to go through some more of your videos! Excellent quality for sure! Cheers!😊😊

Sometimes the fault is elsewhere but no matter what system is being investigated, ALWAYS check the integrity of the wiring and power before lashing out good money on parts.

I took my car to mechanics for this issue and luckily he was honest and said it was just the fuse so I'll be doing it myself however he said 'it needs to be reset' im guessing he means the battery? Once you've put a new fuse in it, providing that IS the only problem, simply drive above 8mph and the system will self check and if no fault is detected the light will extinguish. Sounds like you might have disturbed the wiring or connector at one of the front wheels. Check connections and that wiring is not chaffed. Check this fuse too.

Thanks very much for this video, super helpful! It actually turned out that it was another fuse on the battery which had split and broken (number 4) so I went ahead and replaced number 4 and 5 with the multipack purchased from Halfords and it worked in turning the handbrake and abs warning lights off (thankfully). When I was in Halfords the chap working there also said that sometimes driving in two figures of 8 (back to back) and then driving in a straight line afterward doing this also sometimes clears the abs light and he admitted it sounded like an old wives tales. Needless to say I tried it just after purchasing the fuses in the car park but it didn’t work so went on to follow this vid. The figure of 8 technique might work for some others though so worth giving it a try if you have enough space to do it safely (of course). Good luck

rik Yes, I think that figure of eight thing is a myth. It's getting above the ABS threshold of 8mph that's important. You could drive up a leg of the Eiffel Tower as long as you get over 8mph, lol!! On your other point, it is possible the order of the fuses changed at some point. My labelling came from a 2003. Anyway up, glad to have been of assistance and that you're all sorted.

No. Fuse can go either way round. Maybe you have a faulty sensor after all. Check the wiring too. Damaged wires and bad connections are common on many cars

1. have you driven the car just far enough to get over 10mph (15kph)? You need to do this to reset the fault light 2. if that doesn't work, then yes you'll need to go to a garage. A generic OBD reader will not read ABS codes because they are manufacturer specific. Alternatively: If your voltmeter can read mVac, then set it on it's lowest scale and connect to the sensors. Spin the wheel by hand and you should get a small voltage. Also make sure to test and inspect the wiring for damage - particularly near the wheels and at the rear.

I have this problem, had a quick look at the fuses, and although they seem intact (i have ordered replacements anyway) the piece of metal that they sit on is very corroded. can these be replaced or cleaned up, I'm not sure if it might be causing a bad connection, as a couple weeks ago whilst driving, the glow plug light started flashing on the dash, but stopped once I had stopped and restarted the engine

Hi metal rs, thanks for watching. When you say "asr stay on", do you mean the asr light on the dash comes on? ASR is a sort-of traction control system, and it could be faulty causing it to cut power unexpectedly. Try turning ASR "off" each time you drive the car and see if you still get the problem.

@@CycloneCyd i tried turning the asr off but the same thing happens. the asr and abs warning light come on, the spedometer needle goes to zero and the car behaves like it is braking for about one second. Then it regains power instantly.

Fair to middling chance I'd say. Make sure to look under the bonnet at things like the serpentine belt (see another of my videos) for general condition (even if you're not particularly mechanical, LOOK confident). And while you're there open up the battery top fuse box (no tools required) and have a close look at all the fuses. Don't say anything if it is the fuse, pretend it's still an unknown and use it as a bargaining chip. If it's not the fuse, I'd say a sensor is the next most likely cause, but unless you know how to test them you'll need a diagnostic. Do let us know how you get on.

@bill Bloggs £ouch! A fiver for one fuse. I'm in the wrong business. Are you UK based? Try Halfords, that pack I got was less than a fiver. Re-check the fuse you fitted though, just in case it's blown again.

Hello, I have skoda fabia, it's VW groups almost everything is the same. The same lights of controls were showing to me. I found that the right front (two pins) sensor is damaged - resistance - no conduction. After watching your material, I checked the 40 A fuse and it's cracked like in your movie. Probably because it had this problem and instead of replacing the 40A fuse they moved the wire to a free fuse position in the fuse box. Welcome aboard.
