This is going to be a sorta long read Ugh so gooood I can’t , like I Love the vibrato speed and depth , it has sorta hammer type of feel which works since it hammers down the feeling of hopelessness in the lyrics in my opinion, you also solidified my liking for Vy1 like I liked her but I did think she was sorta boring while being realistic but you changed my mind on her , the way you use her is so good , though you are such a good tuner in general that I think that you can even use vocal synths that aren’t very good and still make them sound decent and yeah her growls are the best I heard in any vocal synth as you typed

thank you!!! :D It makes me really glad you're able to appreciate all those details ^u^ I messed around a lot with the Gender parameter for this one (there were jumps from 0% to the maximum in a matter of notes) and I realized that if you mix that with strong vibrato you get a kind of operatic singing style (at least it works wonderful with VY1)

This is such an amazing cover!! (It’s definitely one of my favorite covers using VY1!) I love how powerful she sounds here; it really emphasizes the desperation the character feels while crying out for someone to rescue her from the darkness, and all the expressive and operatic vibrato really help add to the dramatic feeling of the song! (I think the dramatic/operatic style would really work with other dramatic Kikuo songs like “Waltz of Malice” and “Corpse Dance” as well!) Do you have any tips of how to make VY1 sound powerful? (I found that it’s a little trickier with her V5 voicebank since she was robbed of all her voicebanks except for her “Normal” voicebank, so she doesn’t have the same power as her V4 version)

Awwwww, thank you!!! ^w^ I really appreciate the suggestions too! I'll take them into account! As for the way I use VY1, I only have Vocaloid 4, and could only suggest you to use that version since you'd have all of her voicebanks and could mix them with Cross Synthesis... I'm sorry to hear they've limited her V5 to the "Normal" voicebank :/ I still think Normal is awesome, but that takes away a lot of her potential and flexibility. Anyway, to make her sound more dramatic I really like to play with the Gender parameter: I set it to a higher value by default to make her sound more mature; and then increase it even more in certain parts where I want her voice to be bolder (the parts when I usually add exaggerated vibrato) which gives her that "operatic" effect. I actually do this thing of chaning the voice tone through the song with pretty much every other Vocaloid I use to give variety and life to the vocals, but kind of take it to an extreme with VY1 xD But the dramatic effect is also the result of how powerful the samples of Natural and Powerful are, so have that in mind...

@@mckatherine Yeah, it’s a shame that her V5 version became so limited; it would’ve been great if they kept all her other voicebanks. And since her V4 got replaced by her V5 version, there’s basically no way to obtain her V4 voicebanks 😞 Also for your suggestions with the operatic vibrato, I tried them out with a small sample of “Meltdown,” and the adjustments really made VY1’s vocals sound super dramatic!! (Your advice was really helpful, thank you!!) And for the “Corpse Dance” recommendation, I made a small test sample to hear what VY1 would sound like with that song, and she actually sounds super good even with her “Normal” voicebank! (I can share the sample(s) or the VSQX/VPR file if you’re willing to check them out; I would love to help you/work with you on any projects, too!)

Thank you!!! ^u^ About the growls, it really depends on the voicebank. VY1V4 is known for sounding very good with them. With the rest of the Vocaloids it can be quite difficult to achieve a sound that is even close to how natural she sounds. There are many factors that will make the vocal more or less powerful: the amount of growl you add, the voicebank, the vocal sample, the breathness you add (it can make the growl more natural), the pitch, even the dynamics and gender... I have a tuning tutorial I did a some time ago if it helps!
