My great great great grandfather was Irish immigrant who came over to the US during the potato famine. After becoming a trapper he took a Cherokee woman to be his wife. He passed away from dysentery at the age of 43. He left behind their 13 year old half breed son to provide for his mother,who barely spoke English. That son grew into a man and found a woman who he wanted to marry. Unfortunately he lived in a confederate state and it was not legal to get married unless you were a property owner. The confederate army offered a plot of land to any young men who enlisted in the rebel army. So he joined up and marched into battle 3 miles from the town where he lived. He was struck by cannon fire which blew both of his legs off and lit him on fire as it miraculously launched him near a body of water. He had to sit and wait for several agonizing moments until the flames could carterise his wounds so he didn't bleed to death before dousing himself off. After passing out for several hours he awoke to the cries and screams of all the young men he had grown up with, many of whom were dead and dying. He crawled all of the way home, having been abandoned by the country he sacrificed everything for,leaving a war he had no claim in behind.
